The D stock started arriving in mid 1979 and it wasn't til January 1980 that the first train made up of 2 double enders entered service from Ealing Broadway. DM 7007 which had the Olympic signs on it carried the Olympic torch in the cab in the run up to the 2012 games and was also part of the last train to ever work in passenger service as well as the farewell tour which I was on. To me 7007 should be in the museum for those reasons and not the other one. 7007 I believe is still at Acton Works as a training vehicle for the emergency response team.

I used to go to IOW every year for holiday when I was small. I can remember watching steam trains changing ends at Ryde Pier Head. I remember the electrification which I think was either 1966 or 67 and the tube trains that replaced them dated back to about 1927 and were mainly from Piccadilly and Northern lines. They came in four and three car units and were classed VEC and TIS which together form the ancient roman name of the island. They were only about 10 years younger than the steam trains they replaced. I think I have a couple of photos somewhere of this stock when I visited the island in the 80’s before they were replaced with the 38 stock

I remember driving a D78 back in the early 90’s when I worked out of Acton Town depot. These were the first underground trains to not have 2 different braking systems by doing away with the Westinghouse pure air brake in favour of the Westcode 3-step Brake (service brake 1-3 + Emergency). They also incorporate a combined power & brake controller & with the deadman’s handle being of a twist style rather than a press down style, they also had a computer in the cab which monitored the train systems & let you know when something was wrong. These were great workhorses & great to drive. I so preferred driving these to driving the old C stock & because of the size of the trains they could not run past High Street Kensington. A great train given a new lease of life.

I would like to wish all the team at Island Line Trains (South Western Railway) all the very best for the first passenger running day tomorrow on the Isle Wight! For anyone intending to try out the new re-introduced service, they plan to operate hourly for the first month, with the first and last service being St John's - Pier / Pier - St John's only. Smallbrook will not be served. I wonder if on Day 1 they will be brave and go for 4 car running? RU-vid footage will no doubt tell us.

It’s a shame that Dr Beeching cut the line which ran from Cowes, Newport and Ryde back in the 60’s as you feel this would be used today. Thanks for a brilliant video. It would be a great day out to take the Hovercraft from Southsea to Ryde, and then have a ride on the new trains.

On the D stock, the TBC (traction/brake controller) worked the opposite way around, braking was achieved by pulling backwards, the “deadman” was released by twisting the handle of the TBC clockwise from the 12 o o’clock position. Interesting to see the changes with the refurb. LT Guards were expected to observe the platform as the train departed, only closing the cab/guards (dependant on stock being worked) door at around 3/4 of the platform length. Much preferred working these to the C stock (Former District Guard Acton & PG depots)

@warweezil2802
@warweezil2802 2 года назад
@@alexgrundon2346After giving the driver “the bell” Guards would often hit “ Guards Close” and hold the door open with a well placed heel so that stepping back inside as the platform headwall approached would allow the door to finally close, this wasn’t possible on the D Stock due to a different type of door unit with a stronger “door motor” , iirc the cab doors also had a pneumatic seal that operated as the door fully closed. The D Stock were great to work from a Guards perspective, although I note the remodelled cab has quite a cluttered drivers desk, with DStock cabs we used to wedge a (wooden) shoe lifting paddle between the drivers windscreen and M (?) door frame and the Control/reverser barrel to provide a “tea table” as there were no flat surfaces around the swivel seat in the cab. Nothing worse on a wet winters morning that trying to access a cab in depot via the (manually locked) door above the coupler (made a handy stepping point) and finding the door wedged close because the tea table hadn’t been removed by the previous crew 🤬 leading to fumbling and swearing while you tried to operate the (platform)cab door with your position switch key 😤😫 After OPO displaced Guards from the District we were placed in depots on other lines, I was at Morden working briefly as a guard before being offered a “motors” course at White City Training Centre (sadly no longer exists) so if you were watching that in the mid 80s, one of those Guards could have been me 😁. Happy Days. If I could go back in time , that’s where I’d go.

Vivarail convert the D-stock to a number of configurations: battery only, electric/battery, diesel/electric, etc. They are to be run in South Wales and Wrexham in Wales to Birkenhead near Liverpool, or even right into Liverpool if the press are to be believed. I think they are being used converted to diesel form In Bedfordshire. Very robust trains.

Note there was a height restriction in Ryde tunnel where some concrete beams had been erected above the track in the 1960s carrying a major road over the tunnel. At the time, the old tube stock was already in use so road engineers took advantage and arranged clearances to suit. The road crossing has since been replaced again with thinner beams that do not impinge so much. Apparently, there were some very minor adjustments to the track alignment in the vicinity of some overbridges elsewhere to provide clearance for the new trains.

Great questions Laura. Different train stocks definitely have their own sounds depending on a host of different components including the gearboxes, motor drive systems, compressors, controllers, door mechanisms, whistles and so on. One Tube line even has one particular train that makes a sloshing sound when it brakes!

RE: Carriage gauge limitation or not of the Island Line: From the Wikipedia BR Class 484 page: [Gauging trials had previously taken place in the 1960s to determine whether Class 503 units were suitable for use on the route.[13] en.wikipedia.org/wiki/British_Rail_Class_484#cite_ref-13 Wiki Class 503 page: [Loading gauge restrictions meant the class did not have the width, or length, which was possible with the Class 502 Liverpool to Southport sets introduced shortly afterwards, to a somewhat similar design. ] en.wikipedia.org/wiki/British_Rail_Class_503 I suspect the case of loading (carriage) gauge being determined by the Ryde Tunnel is still open. Edit to Add: [...] [The raising of Ryde Tunnel’s track bed in 1967 made the height restriction even more severe. The headline figure for the current maximum height of stock is approximately 3.3m, though much depends on the interaction between the curved roof of the tunnel and the roof profile of trains. A train which is just under 3.3m in height might fit at its centre line, but not at its outside edges. At the time of electrification, the only easily available trains small enough to fit through Ryde Tunnel were the Tube’s Standard Stock, at 2.88m in height.] [...] www.londonreconnections.com/2018/third-ryde-tube-transfer-troublesome/

Actually the Class 503 gauging trials were carried out in 1983 (long after the tunnel floor was raised in the 1960s) and was deemed a success by the management at Ryde. Full details are in my book ‘Ryde Rail’.

What has happened to all the 38 stock? Have they all been preserved or have any been scrapped? I really hope the have all been preserved as I have many fond memories of riding on them only a few years ago and I remember them when they briefly ran on the East London Line when you had to step up to the platforms!

 @Gary Cross None gone for scrap yet. The few which were supposed be scrapped got listed on eBay for a ridiculous sum (£32k each). Two (122 and 225) have been bought and subsequently dispatched to a private site Wishaw. The other (129) is currently awaiting what will have to be a very substantial cosmetic restoration at the East Somerset Railway. The fourth vehicle which was originally destined for scrap (229) is stored at Reid Freight's Stoke-on-Trent yard. Of the officially preserved vehicles, 483004 is being cosmetically restored for use as cafe seating at Hollier's Farm on the Isle of Wight and 483007 is on display at the Isle of Wight Steam Railway. 483006 is settling into its new home at the Llanelli & Mynydd Mawr Railway in Carmarthenshire (South Wales) where restoration has begun under the auspices of the London Transport Traction Group. 483008 will be joining 483006 at the L&MMR when 484005 is finally completed.

@alexgrundon2346
@alexgrundon2346 2 года назад
I’m not an expert on carriage lengths of different tube stock but I understand some were ruled out as their coach length was too long for the radii of some curves on the line. Perhaps the 83 stock had that issue but I must apologise for not being certain.
@HowieeZ

One of the biggest advantages is that they are surface stock and so much bigger than the old tube stock they are replacing. I never liked the old tube trains, they were inferior to the steam hauled carriages they replaced.

The name of the program is Hidden London Hangouts. The premise is four friends hanging out and sharing their love of all things London transport. They’ve been very clear about their agenda all along, and have collected the warmest and most excited group of enthusiastic fans who see this program for what it is-a labor of love. While there are other places online to listen to people talk about trains, you’d be hard pressed to find the chat and charm, the cheeky and the geeky, that thrives in this lovely space.

London Underground has long since used the the word “Tube” synonymously with the word “Underground”. Hence the entire map or the Underground is titled “Tube planner” on platforms and “Tube map” on pocket editions. TfL’s writing style guidelines also confirm this. It is also worth noting that the correct distinction is “subsurface” and “deep tube” rather than just “tube”, precisely to avoid potential confusion with the correct use of “the Tube” to refer to the whole system. Hope that clears things up.

Personally, I love, and am deeply touched by, the glimpses of personal information the team shares with us-Siddy’s marathon training and moving house stress, Laura’s trips with her little ones, Chris’ plug obsession, Alex’s crushes. That’s what makes this place so special and real and genuine and authentic, a cut above the rest. My own YT feed is flooded with options for other London transport offerings, but this is the only channel that I found that makes me feel like it’s more than just a show; it’s a community of friends hanging out, hence the name. I feel privileged to be a part of a place that’s safe, loving, accepting, unconditional, tolerant. It’s such a refreshing change from, you know, real life.

Three of the four presenters are employees of the London Transit Museum, so I don’t see how you can accuse them of bandwagon jumping. And the little spy glass in the upper right hand corner of your screen is a search function for the kind of vibe you’re looking for on RU-vid that might be a better fit for you.
