Thanks Alex. Interesting discussion about how data drives the design and operation of the boat. My main tool for this when I was sailing was how the wind affected my hair! Sail safe, sail wise, sail on.

Very interesting point of view, and indeed quite different from what Jean le Cam advocated for : making sure that the Vendee Globe's doors remain open for young sailors and small businesses’ wallets. I am curious to see how these different point of view will settle.

@@sailingsunlinenorth3154 i hope I can get there one day. Currently I’m at a place where I can’t take my eyes off the sails, partly because I’m amazed by them, and partly because my brain is testing where the equilibrium is. One day I hope I can be at a point where I can let the wheel go and just manage the sails and be confident in my plan and be one with the boat!

You’ve had the entire experience this Vendee Globe, Alex . Really massive appreciation to you for a few things as you consider the challenge and disappointment of having to abandon this race : 1. You have shown incredible good sportsmanship . Giving credit to the other sailors all along shows your character . And 2. Following you since you had no choice but to abandon its clear what a difficulty it was for you and yet you persevered and managed to still be supportive of all !! And finally for now 3. You have been the reason so many thousands of us followed the race from beyond France and French speaking countries . You are truly a natural ambassador for this event . Fair Winds on board and beyond, Alex !!

It really makes you respect the sailors years ago who had to sail “ by the seat of their pants” without the technology that they have today it’s sad really Once the computers go down they are kinda lost🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️

@frankstocker5475 3 года назад
Before this technology we had sailors, another 10 years & the boats won't need anyone on board. The skipper will control the boat from his couch. At the start of the Vendee Globe, I sent a text to my friend Soho in France. I said Alex will break his hi-tec boat, Pip Hare didn't win but she beat Alex. It was Alex who said "Too win first you have to finish"

Wow I wsn't expecting this update...to be honest I haven't given the Vendee a second thought since AT retired. Sorry to the other competitors but, I retired when Alex did. My over riding feeling is that there is way way way too much crap in the ocean....nets, containers, plastic etc etc...and we should all bow our heads in shame. When you have cetaceans washing ashore with bellies full of plastic it's obvious that the ocean is in a bad way...

yeah that's weird, it sounds like he was really unprepared. Also i still wonder why he didn't have a third rudder to repair the broken one, just as Pipe Hare or other participants. He likes fancy words just as "machine learning" but he needs to come back to the basics sometimes....

Well they did smash the boat pretty hard in its first race, so I bet the prep was really on the edge
@rhitrix
@rhitrix 3 года назад
Is there a point, Alex, where your boat becomes too hi-tech thus diminishing the likelihood of completing a race? I can't help but think the all-carbon-fibre materials in Hugo Boss let you down. Sacrificing rigidity for weight and thus improved foiling. The boat clearly just couldn't handle the impacts. Jean Le Cam with an old non-foiler Imoca came in fourth overall. Something to be said about skill (and luck to an extent) beating out all these other foilers. I'd love to see you on a less F1-like boat, relying less on super hi-tech kit and just sailing to 1st place. You deserve it.

Safe journey for the last few miles. Sadly the winds look a bit too light to enjoy the sail, but at least it's not a gale in the channel, which can be tedious.

That’s absolutely fascinating cutting edge stuff but technology has a habit of letting you down when you least want it to. Is there a danger that you may become overly reliant on it or will it just be used as an aide to the decision making process?

Rise of the digital twin in sailing. Not sure what the rules are on self optimising controls but 100% agree with you. Its a pity because the Win would have been up for grabs , the race was slow they were all off the pace nursing their boats, a strong boat that could have been sailed hard would have romped home. I am not buying the rudder blade breakage, imho something else happened.......... you only have to look at the great race YES WE CAM sailed in an old boat with no foils .....
