Once Upon a Time in Animation

This is just a little tribute to the classics of animation. To me, traditional style artwork is something special...and something we should certainly see more of in today's animation world. Yes in fact "once upon a time" there were good quality cartoons and animated movies. These are just some scenes from a personally picked handful of them.
These shows (even the cartoon series, like "Talespin") had some key things that many animation projects of today (clone CGI comedy movies, hrm?) don't seem to. Fantastic plot, well developed characters, and an emotion that really pulled the viewer in. At least it's how it was for me.
Many of these features inspired many creative projects of my own, and I think the animation companies should journey "once upon a time" and remember the heart of animation.
The Song is "Once Upon a Time with Me", from "Once Upon a Forest."
Anyways, all shows are copyright to their creators, I'm just a loyal fan. Enjoy. :3

We cried when Charlie spent his final moments with Anne Marie and ran away in terror when he was sucked into Hell. WE cheered for Littlefoot when he and his friends finally discovered the Great Valley after such a perilous and depressing journey. WE screamed in horror when Hexxus revealed his final form to destroy Fern Gully. WE punched the television screen when Steele got Balto's sled team lost on purpose. These characters were REAL to us growing up.

Ah traditional animation, the beauty that has never diminished or become old for me. Traditional knows no boundaries whereas CGI softwares do. The true art form that warms my heart and brings back a flood of memories from my childhood when CGI was only just learning to walk and posed no threat.Thank you Disney and Studio Ghibli for continuing on the hand drawn animation tradition.

Oh God...Nostalgia just flew threw my soul. It dipped it's delicate wings in my blood and soared through my memory. Somewhere it lit a light I thought had long been extinguished from my cynical teenage heart. ❤

The part that really got me was the All Dogs Go to Heaven ending especially considering Judith Barsi is long gone. Dom DeLuise has been gone for almost 10 years yet Burt Reynolds us still around and is probably missing his old friend. ..

The nostalgia may be far away from us, but they are in our hearts and memories forever and nothing will ever take it away from us because we are eighty / ninety borns and we know animation better than today's animators know it. We have grown up but our hearts haven't. For the sake of our once upon a times back then, we must keep our hearts that way. That's all we have and nothing else.

I loved growing up with those movies. Nowadays I don't like movies as much because they seem sobland in comparison. Sure there are a few good ones today, but the really good ones came from my childhood. I saw 'The Iron Giant' as a child and fell in love with it. I remember staring at the sky hoping something would fall and land in the forest near my house.

This almost made me cry. I agree that the CGI movies mostly seem to be leaping off one another's backs. Most of them are comedies and so don't need a good plot. But, I miss the good ol' days of dramatic animated movies with serious plots and deep characters. T_T

The first few clips are from a tv series that was on Nick in the early 90's called "David the Gnome". The other is Disney's "Talespin", another wonderful cartoon series from the 90's. These were to show that it wasn't just the movies of animation that were better back then. ;3 Thank you so much for the comments, by the way! I really should log in more often, lol. I love that this video is still up. Hope it continues to remind people of classic animation. What a real treasure hand painted/drawn animation is, something to this day I stop and appreciate. The movies where the animation and detail stand out for me are; Bambi, Cinderella, Lady and the Tramp, The Land Before Time, and Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron.

Instant fave...this was beautiful. It's so true, too...I was watching a VHS the other day and they were showing the storyboards for The Swan Princess and how it was drawn, and that was just beautiful. It makes me so sad they don't do that anymore because there was a certain amount of magic and poignancy that existed in those movies that can't be found anymore. Bonus props for including that clip of Watership Down, which still remains my favorite movie of all time.

I love classic movies :) It's funny how people say "Give us back our childhood movies", because i think they should stay with our childhood...Like fond memories we can look back on. We can still see them, great movies, but we can't(shouldn't) really go back to try and re-create what we once loved so dearly...I love nostalgia, and that's all it will be.

No matter how much CGI tries to be REAL, hand drawn movies will ALWAYS feel more REAL to me. I mean, seriously, almost all people my age had dreams where they were alongside Charlie, Itchy, Littlefoot, and what have you. The people who make animated films these days need to realize that it is not JUST the animation that makes characters feel real, but the story and the lines. My cousin is now 5, and the characters from ADGTH are more REAL to her than any cgi characters.

These classics have defined several generations of people and shaped their personalities. Ulike modern movies though that are shallow and don't make an imprint, these movies forever attach themselves to who you are and can even grant you the feeling of being a young kid again. Whenever I watch Secret of nimh, The Last Unicorn, or any of the others that came out when I was just a child, I loose track of everything around me and can recall my childhood in ways I otherwise could not, thank you.

Now this is good animation. I'm all for 3D & CGI, but at the same time it's sad to see fewer 2D/traditional animation being done. It was the traditional artwork that inspired me to want to become an animator in the first place. I still do, but it's difficult to find work when you have little to no experience in 3D.

I think all of those movies made me cry when I was a kid. I probably will still cry if I watch them again, and I want to. I remember I bawled in The Fox and the Hound at the scene you have at the end of your video with them. I was mindlessly flipping through tv channels a while ago and stumbled across the new Winnie the Pooh. It's CGI and I watched an episode and it just wasn't the same. I miss the classic animation and the way it always got to my heart. Wonderful video.

It's more than OK. I'm a 21-year-old guy, and several classic animated movies like these have a special place in my heart; they hold a kind of honest joy that nothing today can seem to match. Balto is my favorite movie, and I just bought The Secret of NIMH and Cats Don't Dance (Once Upon A Forest is next on the list). You're totally right about the depth; the shallowness in today's CGI stock is pitiful. If only Amblin Entertainment hadn't died...their material put Disney's to shame.

Animated film truly hasn't changed more drastically than shifting from 2D to 3D..the biggest change has definitely come in animated television. There'll always be these 2D gems of the past to sit right along with the numerous 3D gems of now (such as Up, Wall-E, HTTYD, Toy Story...), but you also have to take into account the time period of all these movies...give 3D another 10 years and we'll soon have a collection of them like this.

I agree with your statement completely, to me traditional style artwork has a form of beauty & quality that most modern CGI doesn't have, and back then they put more effort into making films than they do now in most (plot, music, characters etc), p.s. I like your video and track.

The classics will always stay while the new and flashy will go out of style. Because the classics have a heart and a message that always stay with us as we grow. We remember all of these characters and are with them from beginning to end sharing the adventure. Some of today's movies and shows just don't match what came before. Because the classics weren't focused on making a buck, they were focused on bringing a story to life through animation and sharing it with others.

Animations nowadays don't have the same raw emotion and power that those from the '90s and beyond had. Each stroke of paint for the background is done with such love that you become enraptured into the universe the story is trying to weave; though the story itself may be bland, it all depends on what you're watching. Today, instead of caring for the aesthetic and story of cartoons, companies are making them cheap and tasteless with their Calart styles and general laziness. There *are* a few modern gems here and there, I will admit. But many movies, even in big animation tycoons like Disney and Dreamworks, they only care about money and probably a toyline which leads to more money. We need these kinds of movies to once again find a place in our time so we can truly appreciate the beauty that is animation. Cheaper does not equal better.

Personally, I would have included more classics (and by that, I mean, before 1980, like Snow White and all the original Disney stuff,) and even some classic anime. As is, though, nice video, and nice sentiment, as well. I do believe in reviving the classic techniques and keeping them alive myself.

@Landon Kemp I think the video included Bambi. Anyway, about the time I started high school (which was the same time this video was uploaded, judging by the publication date at the top), I seriously considered a career in animation. I longed to establish my own studio and bring back not just hand-drawn traditional animation but also traditional techniques: hand-inked and hand-painted cels, multiplane cameras, and successive exposure, and so forth. Once I realized that all the animation programs at the good art schools were emphasizing CG over traditional, I knew I couldn't take that path. I sometimes wonder what could have been if I had stuck with that plan, although I don't regret the difficulty I likely would have had finding work to support me before I could strike it out on my own. Perhaps you can live my old dream for me. =)

That was Watership Down. Your welcome to check it out but I warn you, it's not as manageable as the others. But if you survived Secret of Nimh, then you might just survive Watership Down. Good luck.
