Same! I have the anniversary edition, despite it’s unfortunately in the original format of the VHS, the colors are off. But the song thankfully was included, along with the original ending reprisal. Imo it was a huge mistake and disappoint the song got cut, given how large of a role it has in the movie, its played several important times, just for the actual song to never appear, and no I don’t count the pop version in the end credits.

I agree! That’s why its my favorite love song. It isn’t about them falling in love with each other like nearly every other song except I See the Light. It’s literally about John Smith was terrified he wouldn’t get the chance to tell her how much he loves her, before she touches him he is literally praying to God for one last chance to see her. I mean the music key is actually from the waterfall encounter, indicating that’s what he’s thinking about before he sees her. I mean what makes this scene even more beautiful is in comparison to other love songs it isn’t bright and cheerful visually, but blue and grey (which is weird why his shirt is white in this scene, almost like the animators forgot to make it blue, but honestly he looks so beautiful in white though) The fact he can’t hold/hug her only rest his chin on her head and touch foreheads says volumes how much he loves her. I always melt when it cuts to the part she’s leaning on his chest and his eyes are cut out, as if she’s too sad to look into his beautiful blue eyes. Also their love is forever, its just their time isn’t infinite.

@@somethingaboutsomeone7641 it was realistic, what was between pocahontas and jhon smith was very strong and passionate, very deep...but it was the magic of a first love. it would have never worked for real day to day life because they were too different. jhon smith is an adventurer who can't stay in one place too long or settle and pocahontas is a leader, someone who needs to stay with her people to take care of them. jhon rolf was more like her in that sense, he did wanted to stay and build a stable life with her and have a family. jhon smith will always be pocahontas first and strongest love...but sometimes love is not enough to build a life together.

I can assume the only reason why the sequel was like the sequel was because people got upset that this movie was so historically inn accurate. I don't have to look it up to know that is the reason why. Accurate or not, these two are my favorite.

So agree! Part of the reason they’re my favorite couple is because they actually had more mature and intense scenes than any other Disney couple. I mean the waterfall encounter alone is the heart of the movie because of how powerful it was, like I seriously dig that it’s an instrumental scene until she ran, like there was much more intensity when neither were speaking. He’s even the first Disney prince who the first thing he asks her is her name, not singing a song about love or dancing with her. That part right there is just so magical. I also noticed they touched each other a lot more than other couples, specifically hugging. I also love how their relationship felt real and genuine as they’re one of the first couples to actually get to know each other first before starting a relationship, and of course they have a disagreement (which was going to happen) and they work through it. Also did you know they’re the only Disney couple aside Rapunzel and Flynn that actually caressed each other when kissing (all other couples just hugged) and that made their kisses more mature and realistic? Also as much as I’m torn about the sad ending, I also feel it fit the maturity of their love, that they had to make a choice NO ONE ever wants to make. When Beast died, Belle begged for him to come back, Flynn died Rapunzel sadly sang her healing incantation for one seemingly hopeless miracle. But despite Smith didn’t actually die, he wasn’t promised he’d survive even if he made it back to London, which added to the impact of saying goodbye because it truly was very possibly their last time together. And you consider If I Never Knew You it just adds to the danger of the probability of him actually surviving or even say their ship got destroyed in a storm like in Frozen. Just so many factors that add to her heartbreaking choice to stay with her people instead

@@madisonmason9179 my favorite underrated moment is probably when they’re teaching each other how to say hello in their languages, or even the part when John is freaking out from a talking tree, but then teases Grandmother Willow and Pocahontas is so relieved he’s just rolling with it. Like the part she’s leaning on his shoulder is so adorable because she’s that much in love with him, but knows it’s not gonna be easy trying to tell her dad he’s the one she wants to marry instead of Kocuom. But yeah, the part they hug when he’s freed is so romantic, especially because it wasn’t a kiss. Did you know his position actually changed so he could be touching HER instead of her outfit? Like she was so scared her dad wasn’t going to listen, but stood her ground and in the end he could see how much he was hurting his own daughter. But ultimately John wasn’t like the others, and he almost made a huge mistake in killing her friend. But my overall favorite moment aside the waterfall scene is the sunflower one, which is actually my iPad wallpaper, and the part when Pocahontas is hugging him before If I Never Knew You, because she’s so ashamed she isn’t able to look into his eyes without crying, feeling so guilty about his death sentence.

I disagree this was the last time/only couple that beautifully displayed true love. While it’s definitely one of my favorites, I’d add Hercules and Meg given he gave up basically heaven and being a god for her, Tiana and Naveen as they learn from each other and a little bit about themselves and are willing to sacrifice their dreams for each other, but huge shout out to Rapunzel and Flynn Rider as my other favorite Disney couple. Flynn DIES to save Rapunzel from someone he never actually met but could easily tell how abusive she was, and couldn’t bear to let Rapunzel remain Gothel’s eternal slave, so he cuts her hair knowing he’d die immediately. But yeah, I feel thats partly why Pocahontas and John Smith aren’t as popular is because they have a more mature relationship, given several of their scenes together, especially the ending. But I think something a lot of people don’t realize is they BOTH learn valuable lessons from each other, her getting him to see the world through her eyes, and him helping her understand how deep his love is and death is a part of life, that he’d rather die a better person in love with her than live his life filled with excitement and adventure, but he’d never meet her. Like what did Eric do? Slay an octopus and just rolled Ariel wasn’t a human? Or Aladdin lying nearly the entire time to get Jasmine’s attention?

OMG! I’m a huge Tangled fan too! Pocahontas and Tangled are actually my favorite Disney Princesses and movies! Favorite couples, princesses, princes, love songs, everything!

It pisses me off they cut this song and "When Love is Gone" from The Muppet Christmas Carol. Such beautiful romantic songs all because some old suit thought kids wouldn't appreciate it.

They had to change john smiths whole character and personality. Just so she could fall out of love with him. And fall for john ralph. In this movie. He was bright\wise\caring\ and understanding. In the sequel they made him cocky\arrogant\ selfish\ less understanding. I dont see why they had to ruin their romance in second movie. Just cuz the real life Pocahontas fell for john ralph. Their romace was one of the alltime best romances in walt disney history

The movie was 30 minutes shorter than other disney classics, so there's no excuse of time. I'll never understand this bone headed decision and not a single person stopped it from being cut.

@@Aight7 yes! I don’t get why some people call her boring or “too serious” given she literally complained Kocuom was too serious and stern, and that’s mainly why she refused him as a husband. I find her very similar to Ariel, wanting to explore and see what’s outside of her village. And she also struggles with her loyalty to her people and being in love with someone who doesn’t try to change her into someone else, like her dad and Kocuom did. If anything she’s able to help both sides see themselves as equals. Like what did Ariel do? Disobey her dad every way possible just for a guy she hardly knew and had a crush on? Sadly, the main reason why Pocahontas and her movie is severely underrated is because she’s still based on a real woman who’s life was basically a living hell when the English came to her land. I’m not kidding, I knew the real story as a kid before even watching the movie. I remember being super disappointed Pocahontas and John Smith definitely weren’t lovers, let alone even the same age, and she married a different John in reality. But I digress. If anything it really sucks how much hate John Smith gets as a character, and it’s very largely because he’s still based on a terrible man. Like if their names were different, 90% of Pocahontas’s problems (specifically racial issues) would be solved. And its really sad how it’s slowly decayed overtime, but a movie like Hercules has been growing in popularity and people claim “We all know the actual mythology is grievously inaccurate to the Disney movie” but Pocahontas gets all the heat and hate because “She was still a real person, like it or not” She was always my favorite princess, and I always thought she was a lot more beautiful than Ariel, Belle or Jasmine tbh, especially her gorgeous hair. And I find her story really relatable, about struggling to fit in with her people while being very close with someone she knew they didn’t like, she just couldn’t figure out how to show them he wasn’t like the others, and truly and deeply cared about her and her tribe, going so far as to almost die to protect their chief from his own men. But no, him being racist at the beginning is too large of a problem to ignore, despite he changes a lot earlier than Aladdin does, who took the entire damn movie to stop lying to Jasmine. And its really sad and rather alarming to see how many people would rather date a liar over someone who was a bit of a jerk at first, but instantly accepted he was wrong and immediately changes his beliefs and ways to the point he literally argued with his boss about the war. My guess is that, with the elements they got, Disney with Pocahontas really tried to show that in unity and perseverance future can chance, despite an ugly past made of horror and historical depressive moments. Of course if J. Smith was not J. Smith but a brand new name and characters the destiny of this beautiful (and versatile, in terms of age) masterpiece would have been different. But people don't go so deep into diving and in all of this, history and pain are in the middle. Native Americans are to this day, in my opinion a minority that is the most disrespected despite long time ago being the majority of the beautiful country that is America today. So let's say that is a delicate topic. This being said, if only the matter wasn't this intricate, it would have been wonderful if people saw the beauty in the message the company tried to portray: despite our differences, despite what sadly separates us, love can break the chains of evil, even the unthinkable ones. You're right, the characters needed to be together to show that, just like in the lion king 2, love can overcome hatred, racism, supremacy and injustice. Love triumphs in the storm. The colors of the wind they showed us, needed a grand finale. My favorite princess is Ariel but right after her, the maturity of Pocahontas always catches my attention, from the way she's characterised (like I specified in the main comment), to the morale of the movie. Just like you with our native American princess, , to me Ariel is the bridge between diversities and the exploration of the new world, a motif of personal growth and wisdom. Ariel represents, to me, the demonstration that following your "gut" feeling isn't always wrong (unless you sign a contract made up by a stranger with tentacles 😂) and that the old of the past, the made up lies of prejudices can be broken through curiosity and innocence of heart. @@Aight7 well, I don’t hate Ariel or anything, as I know a lot of people really love her passionate, yet curious and quirky side, and not letting her dad deter her from what she wants. My only question is why so many people love her, but then proceed to call Pocahontas too serious or boring? Ariel imo literally wasn’t afraid to keep disobeying her dad and didn’t fear his temper until he destroyed her treasure trove, which pushed her to believing he hated her and would be much happier with someone who didn’t even know she existed, let alone her species. For crying out loud, even in the live action movie, they confirmed that Athena was killed by humans, so why would Ariel still be so curious about a species that killed her mother? I know she felt she just didn’t belong in the sea and felt such a powerful connection to the human world. But I feel in the sequel she doesn’t really try to learn more about them, simply becomes a queen and a mother. I honestly believe the main reason why she’s still so popular is because she’s a mermaid, as she’s more very largely marketed as a mermaid instead of a human. And I do understand the primary reason why Pocahontas is kinda in the middle when it comes to popularity is because of how awful the real story is, I feel a lot of people forget how powerful she really is. She struggles the entire movie of being true to herself and satisfying her father and people’s expectations of her by being forced to marry a respected warrior who she knew she could never love. The reason why she’s able to befriend and fall in love with John Smith instead is because she could tell how similar he was to herself, and didn’t see him like her people did. And she loves how he completely embraces her as she truly is and doesn’t try to get her to be someone else. But ultimately, she was the first princess to stop a war on her own and actually save her man, being the hero in her story, not John. Even in the end, she made the heartbreaking decision of staying with her people over being with someone she didn’t want to leave, and really wanted to see his world. She felt like her people didn’t really understand her, but she still cared about them and just didn’t have the heart to leave them for a little while, fearing she was endangering them if she left to pursue her happiness. And I admire she doesn’t choose a man she didn’t know for long over her people she had a duty to protect and lead one day. Even in the sequel, I love how she was willing to risk her life and possibly never seeing them again to create peace. The part Nakoma cried about very possibly never seeing her best friend ever again was really heartfelt and one of the few scenes in that movie that didn’t have me screaming in rage. I personally don’t find Pocahontas boring as a character, as she’s very strong and has character growth as well. I just feel her movie is a lot deeper and mature than most are willing to admit. One of my Pocahontas friends even admitted she actually loved the sad ending of Pocahontas, because it proved the romance wasn’t the point of the movie. And while I disagree, I slightly appreciate its a different kind of happy ending. Pocahontas really wanted to be with John more than anything, but she loved him too much to let him die in her land when he had a chance to recover if he went home. Her happiness was making sure her people remained safe and peaceful with the English, but ultimately making sure John got better, even if the price was never seeing him again. Like, what happened if Ariel discovered being a human wasn’t everything she imagined and chose to stay a mermaid instead? Would Eric have abandoned his kingdom to be with her? And that’s something I really loved about the ending of Pocahontas, after she sadly declined his offer, he immediately chose to stay because he didn’t want her to make such a difficult decision of feeling she was being forced to choose between her people and him, he was completely ok with dying so she didn’t have to make that choice. While with Rolfe, I really don’t buy their romance at all, and it felt his choice to dump everything just to be with Pocahontas felt he didn’t really comprehend how much he was going to have to learn and change to be able to live like her people. Let alone he doesn’t even bother to get to know her as a person, making the movie that much more irritating. While her romance with John Smith, I always loved how it didn’t automatically begin as a relationship. Yeah they definitely were entranced by their beauty, but their love truly comes from them actually getting to know each other a little better and learning valuable lessons from the other. Like a lot of people always claim “John only liked her beauty and was going to shoot her at first” and proceed to forget about this song and the ending entirely, including saving her dad’s life. I’m not trying to bash other couples, as each have their own dynamics and morals and stuff, but I don’t get why Aladdin and Jasmine or even Hercules and Meg are a lot more popular than Pocahontas and John Smith, given how much Aladdin and Meg lie and manipulate Hercules and Jasmine. And for whatever reason John being racist is the worst sin imaginable and is a completely unforgivable crime? Despite he even argued with his comrades about the war, saying the natives aren’t savages and can be trusted. Just don’t understand what else he had to do in the movie to prove he deeply and truly regretted how he acted before and really does want to help make things right by helping create peace

Actually I always melt when he gives her hand a gentle kiss, then sadly vanishes, showing how gentle and kind he was in comparison to Kokoum who had his hand out as if expecting her to automatically take it, in other words didn’t really care or consider how she felt. The fact its both his hands holding hers gives me that he wants to hold/touch her as much as possible and her hand is like a flower, so beautiful and delicate

Pocahontas taught John a lot of things he never would have known had he not found her. She taught him to have respect for people, and nature as everything has a spirit and a name. This showed John that Native Americans weren't the "savages" his boss was claiming them to be, but instead nomadic people who saw beauty in everything Mother Nature has to offer (the sunsweet berries of the Earth, rolling in the riches of foliage all around you).

Same! That part is so adorable, showing she couldn’t go through with marrying someone she would never love the same way, she just didn’t know how to tell him no. While John Smith loved her exactly as she was and loved her even though he was going to die. Honestly the way he holds her hand is like it was a delicate flower, giving it a gentle loving kiss before sadly vanishing as if to say “I’m sorry for breaking your heart, I will always love you” This is something no one has noticed yet: before this scene (not in the video) she tells Nakoma “All of this happened because of me. And now I’ll never see John Smith again” this implies she was actually scared of seeing him one more time because she was so scared he would blame her for his death sentence or didn’t love her anymore. She’s so overwhelmed with grief and sadness, notice when she first enters the wigwam, his head keeps lowering because he has no desire to see whoever is there, but the moment he recognizes her his eyes lit up just like the first time he looked at her! She immediately breaks down and even snaps out of sadness everything would’ve been better if they never met. He was trying to cheer her up by literally joking about dying because all he wanted was to see her smile one last time! She’s so overwhelmed with grief and guilt she lets her frustrations slip a little. I just love how this song is like soothing a deep burn. Its so gentle, comforting but ultimately loving! It isn’t about kissing the girl, a beauty finding goodness in the beast or discovering a whole new world, or even can you feel the love tonight. It’s about if they never knew each other, how they completed each other in ways no one else ever did and their love is literally based on understanding and appreciating their differences!

But yes, that moment of contrasting her letting John take her hand when she refused Kocuom just shows how much she truly loves John and vice versa. Imo the 2 scenes are meant to reflect how Pocahontas sees each man: Kocuom expected her to marry him and didn’t really care or consider her feelings, while John loves her so much and she is so precious to him, but he’s so sorry for breaking her heart as shown when he disappears

I do agree that it definitely should not have been based on a real story, but the point is John was willing to accept he was so wrong about how he viewed people like her. The movie isn’t meant to represent how awful colonizers actually were towards Native Americans. The point is he was willing to learn from his mistakes and try and convince his comrades to do the same. Not all Europeans were awful towards them, and the point of his character development is to show it wasn’t too late for him to become a better man. He clearly felt so awful and embarrassed about how long it took him to see he was the savage one, not Pocahontas’s people. If you actually listened to the song, you’d see and hear in his voice he deeply regrets how he used to see the world, and that’s why he loves Pocahontas so much. Unfortunately, the test audiences were literally kids, like 3 year olds. The song isn’t like previous love songs which are visually entertaining, its meant to focus on the here and now as both really thought this was their last time together. Plus it has a more mature tone because it’s not about falling in love, rather just how much John really loves her, and doesn’t even want to imagine a life never meeting or loving her. Plus it also is meant to be sweet yet soothing as Pocahontas feels everything is her fault and everyone including John hates her. But that’s not true at all! He’s even more in love with her than ever before, and would do anything to protect her! But oh course little kids obviously weren’t going to understand the more mature tone of their relationship, especially with the sad ending having a more realistic and mature tone. All Disney couples except Pocahontas and John Smith got happily ever afters. Cutting this song had several huge mistakes, but the worst is I really believe if it wasn’t cut a lot more people would like John a lot more as a Disney Prince instead of constantly complaining how arrogant and cocky he is. Does he look like a f*cking colonizer in this song or when he took a bullet to save her dad?! Did you know Part of Your World was so close (and I mean really close) to being cut from the Little Mermaid for the same reason? Howard Ashman fought like hell to keep it in, and it ended up sparking a Renaissance! So why the heck Disney didn’t learn from the first time they almost made that mistake?! Worse is Pocahontas’s movie is actually shorter than the others, which I seriously don’t get why

I say its a mature song that unfortunately sometimes love doesn’t work the way we want. Like this song made the ending a million times sadder. Like Disney deliberately dialed up the romance and tricked us into thinking they could be together after her dad spared his life, just to shatter their happily ever after with Ratcliffe unwilling to back down and he made the heartbreaking decision to sacrifice his life to save her dad’s instead Also I wouldn’t say “first love didn’t work out” because then you make it sound like you don’t mind she chose Rolfe instead. They clearly wanted to be together more than anything in the end, but she loved him too much to let him die when he might live if he went back home. He literally tried insisting he wasn’t leaving her side when she said her people needed her more for now. But she wanted him to live, and she so badly wanted to go with him, but gave up a golden opportunity to make her dreams a reality for the greater good of her people.

And unfortunately while his recovery is taking longer than he hoped, he’s heard word the king stupidly believed Radcliffe’s lies, and as much as he just wants to hold her again, he makes the heartbreaking decision to stay and keep an eye on him and let people believe he died, including her.

Sadly a huge reason is because he’s still based on a terrible person who was so awful towards the real Pocahontas and her people. If you’ve read even a little of the real history, you’d see her short lived life was anything BUT a fairytale unfortunately. She was even imprisoned and raped by the English, and was forced to marry John Rolfe for a political marriage because she was a chief’s daughter, for whatever peace the English promised. But yes, John Smith has always been my favorite Disney prince too! My other is Flynn Rider. But yes, it pains me so much John Smith gets sh*tted on so much in comparison to other princes just because he’s unfortunately based on a terrible person. I even read a comment once that said they completely hated John Smith BECAUSE Disney tried portraying him as this amazing man when he was the complete opposite in reality. Like, my boy changed about halfway through the movie and wasn’t afraid to confront his comrades they were wrong about the natives, that they could learn from them and coexist peacefully. He risked his own life several times just to spend time with Pocahontas, even protecting Thomas and he probably expected he’d be killed in her village that night. But ultimately, he jumped in front of a freaking bullet he knew would kill him to protect someone who hated him so much and almost killed him to declare war. And in the end when Pocahontas chose to stay with her people instead, he chose to stay with her despite he knew he’d die! But despite wanting to stay with her over surviving his wound, he honored her wish to return home without her, knowing he might not even survive before making it back in time, which added to how sad her decision was and insisting he go home. Like, I hate it whenever people try complaining “He’s a racist who called her a savage and almost killed her the first time he saw her. He’s also cocky and arrogant” Like these people clearly did NOT see him jumping in front of a damn bullet he expected to kill him to protect her dad and stop the war. Not to mention this song really shows just how much he matured as a character, she feels everyone hates her and everything is entirely her fault. She’s so overwhelmed with guilt and sadness she snaps at him they shouldn’t have met, because she felt he’d blame her too. Despite it really hurt his feelings, he gently reassures her meeting her is the best thing that’s ever happened to him! Like she truly doesn’t understand how much he loves her! He can’t even hold her in his big strong arms and tell her everything will be okay, just be there for her and help her to understand the importance of letting go and his love will burn on forever even after he’s dead. He’s extremely hot and sexy, kind, brave, strong, open minded, free spirited, protective, and ultimately very loving and caring about the woman he loves! Not to mention he was patient with her, not understanding why she was afraid to let him get closer because she was already betrothed to another man. Like he was willing to be just her friend and still protect her people! And ultimately he’s sacrificial, willing to die to protect his loved ones! No joke, Eric and Aladdin have nothing on John Smith. Legit If I Never Knew You is much more impressive than Eric popping a giant octopus, and I personally don’t get why Aladdin is hailed as one of the best Disney princes, given he lies nearly the entire time to Jasmine. I’d rather date someone who was willing to admit they were wrong and learn from their mistakes than someone who kept lying to get me to give them a chance.

A lot of it (at least these days) might just be because Mel Gibson, though a good actor and a decent singer, and very likable in this movie, well… he kind of isn’t the greatest person. So there’s probably some overlap there. I’m able to set aside my “ugh Mel Gibson” and acknowledge that he KILLED it in this movie, especially this scene, and I’m 38 years old and still cry when I watch this 🤷‍♀️

I know the historical nerds complained “He doesn’t even sound British.” Despite from what I’ve read, his accent is actually more accurate to how Brits actually talked back then. But the main reason why not a lot of people like the character is unfortunately he’s still based on a man who was just as bad as the rest of the English towards Pocahontas’s people. There’s even widespread rumors he completely lied about her saving his life and he fabricated the entire thing for attention. So it makes having a popular entertainment studio romanticize them pretty cringy and downright offensive for some. If you’ve read even a little of the real Pocahontas’s life, you’d see how terrible the English were towards her. So its really sad to see such an amazing Disney character imo get hated on merely because of his name and unfortunately being a real person. While characters like Hercules don’t get crucified for what happened in their stories, like Hera manipulating Hercules to kill Megara and their children.

A lot of Disney movies back then normally had a professional sing for the characters instead of the voice actor themselves. And I found that incredible Gibson actually kinda embraced his character, considering Alan Menken had to rewrite the song to fit his deeper voice. But it really makes this song more wholesome and just makes it that much more irritating and disappointing the song got cut for the dumbest reason, kids getting bored. Yep! I was only 2 years old when it came out! Pocahontas was always my favorite Disney princess. Its really sad how underrated she and the movie is. More so is how much hate John Smith gets as a Disney character, which sucks when you see how much he changes in the movie. His hate is being largely based on who he was in reality, which is the polar opposite of his Disney persona. Like Aladdin and Phoebus are complete jerks in their original stories and Hercules actually kills Megara in the mythology of Heracles, but for whatever reason they aren’t judged by their original characters, only Disney. Its really sad how this movie hasn’t aged as well because of more people becoming aware of the sad story of Pocahontas. Like if the movie was INSPIRED by her legacy and their names were completely different, I feel a lot more people would be more forgiving and accepting like they are with Hercules. Like, Hercules is just as inaccurate as Pocahontas is when it comes to the source material, especially with Zeus, Hera and Hades, but Hercules isn’t crucified for how graphically inaccurate it is, and neither is Anastasia. Does anyone else feel as though they mixed up the personalities of John Smith and John Rolfe in the second movie. John Smith wasn't as cocky in the first movie, he was understanding and open to learning about her culture. He even wanted to stay with her in the end but he had to leave to save his life. But in the second movie he was extremely cocky and more interested in his promotion and having her as a trophy wife. Similar to how John Rolfe portrayed himself in the beginning of the movie.

That second movie scarred me for life. Not only did they want her to pick John Rolfe, BUT THEY MADE HER CHOOSE BETWEEN THEM. That scene when she hugs John Smith and runs to the other bastard should have never even existed. #teamjohnsmith

Legit John gets so much crap and its so unfair given how much he does for Pocahontas, and people have the nerve to call him a selfish asshole who didn’t actually love Pocahontas, she was just another adventure or summer fling.

Despite the main reason for its cut was sadly because it was too boring and “mature” for children (cough, cough, Hellfire 🙄) I think that was a minor reason why it was cut, because it wasn’t completely animated very shortly before Pocahontas was supposed to come out in theaters. That’s why it has the memory montage. Though I don’t get why they didn’t just animate whatever scene was originally supposed to be there for the anniversary edition, given some VHS copies did have the song, hence why a lot of people in the comments are fighting over if it was in the original release or not. Like it kinda baffles me how Disney planned Pocahontas to be the next big hit, not the Lion King. BUT then you see all the deleted scenes like this one, and aside historical inaccuracies, its no wonder Pocahontas didn’t perform as well as they hoped. Legit the part John says her people don’t know any better was originally where she asks about women from his world, he tells her but discourages her from trying to change herself to be more like an English lady because he already loves her as she already is! So yeah lol

But yeah, the fact its an instrumental at least in 5 scenes just makes it even more infuriating that this show got deleted. Like Someday from Hunchback of Notre Dame was switched for God Help the Outcasts, and the original melody is only played when she frees Quasi during the feast of fools and when she kisses Phoebus in the end. But also If I Never Knew You was fully intended to be in the movie, it wasn’t deleted concept or anything like Middle of the River. Did you know Part of Your World actually wasn’t supposed to be in the movie? The cut was ordered, but Howard Ashman fought like hell to keep it in, stubbornly refusing to let it be deleted. And it ended up becoming one of the most iconic songs in Disney and made Ariel one of the most popular Disney characters ever, because her dream as a princess wasn’t purely about a guy. Too bad he passed away from AIDS before Pocahontas was created. I’m sure he’s severely disappointed such a beautiful song was deleted for the same reason. Like how did Disney not learn from a mistake they almost made once? Like even in commentary of Pocahontas, the directors and Alan Menken himself have admitted they deeply regret their choice to delete it. Which really sucks because despite it still would’ve been criticized for historical inaccuracies, I think Pocahontas wouldn’t have gotten nearly as much hate if this song stayed. Like it really saddens me not a lot of fans even like John Smith as a Disney prince, and sadly cutting the song also sadly cut out his sweeter and more romantic side. And not to mention ALL Disney princess couples with the exception of Mulan and Shang got a love song, even if it wasn’t a duet like Lost in the Woods. So why the heck Pocahontas is the exception?!

Honestly, I would rather read about history or watch a more accurately presented work than this. Disney animated movies were created to make magic happen...which is one of the greatest things I look out for when they release a new work. Accuracy went out of the window from the get go with their first princess movies - Snow White? If people knew the original work, it's not as happy as the animated movie so I have no idea what Disney ate to let the people who kept complaining about the inaccuracy of Pocahontas to get to them. I mean they worked so hard on the first movie, to let outsiders to get to you means you've lost your original purpose and it's not your work anymore, it's someone else's.

to those people it's like watching Hercules for appropriate Greek mythology... for one Hercules is Roman.. as well as Cupid.. the Greek names are Heracles, and Eros. As well as Hera wasn't actually his mom, in either Myth, but she hated and constantly tried to kill him (not Hades) throughout his lifespan :P because it was a greek tragedy D;

I think this scene was never included in first rough cut at all, it was not animated until 2004. This animation was made special for the DVD release as a special feature, just like what they did with "human again" in Beauty and beast

It was removed because although older audiences liked it, they thought it was too mature for the child audiences. It was a good song for the plot and really made their separation and the sequel all the more heartbreaking for them.

I agree. I mean aside he’s a mini celebrity and undoubtedly a ladykiller he doesn’t really have anyone close. I mean in the scene when she asks if he’ll go home, and he responds he doesn’t really have a home, I’m a bit bummed she doesn’t ask if he had a family that misses him, and maybe he reveals he was an orphan and that’s why he joined the military, a great way to explore the worlds and even made a name for himself, despite now it’s in a way meaningless because his response secretly indicates as long as he’s with her he’s happy. Watch any scene after they met he isn’t with her, he RARELY smiled which shows how much his heart longs to be with her

I’m kinda bummed she doesn’t say anything like “I knew it was you” he says “What did you say??” and she shyly responds “Oh nothing” And it does kinda relate how in their separation they feel incomplete because their hearts long to be with each other

My favorite in the movie!

Honestly this one is waay better than Beauty and the Beast or A Whole New World. Both of those and nearly every other Disney song except maybe I See the Light are about them realizing they are in love/falling in love with each other. Did you know without this song John Smith never actually says the word love? It does slightly bug me, but his actions and sacrifice more than make up for it! This is a man who is prepared to die and is helping the only person he’s ever loved reach the same peace and serenity, that their love is eternal no matter what. Do you even imagine how much that hurt he is having to accept he cannot be with the one person he’s ever loved, but he doesn’t even actually cry in front of her either? He even says “I can see the truth so clear in your eyes so dry your eyes” and he can’t wipe them away himself

Exactly! This song pretty much explains why Rolfe never stood a f*cking chance with her. How the f*ck both Pocahontas and John Smith completely forgot If I Never Knew You is beyond disrespectful and insulting. A song literally about how alone and empty you’d be if you never met, and how you completed each other through your differences!

I agree so much. I absolutely hate it whenever I see some dumbass claiming the movie was better without it because of them not having enough time for a song. Since when is a song’s time logic relevant to the story’s time logic? Colors of the Wind literally shows her bending time just to show him a constellation, hence it would’ve taken FOREVER to get through it with all the running around they did. For a long time the waterfall encounter was my favorite part, still is because how beautiful and intense it was. But this is what I consider the second heart of the movie. Without it, it completely chopped out a different side of John Smith, considering this song is very similar to CotW where its his turn to show how wrong she is about never meeting each other. I also really love how it isn’t visually entertaining like every other Disney love song, it’s literally focused in the here and now as Pocahontas can’t stop crying and he’s comforting her through his deep base voice. Eric needed a singing crab, Beast needed a singing teapot and Aladdin needed a genie (disguise) and a magic carpet. All John Smith needed was a pair of shackles. And that’s what makes this song even more saddening yet beautiful especially in V2 “If I never held you…” because he is emoting to how badly he wants to hold her in his big strong arms, showing he will never leave her and will ultimately protect her from any danger, but all he can do is be there for her. Especially the part he headtouched her and is freaking nuzzling with her! His wrists are itching so much, his hands are probably going numb and he’s probably dislocated his shoulders having to lean that far just to touch her, but he doesn’t give a sh*t about his physical pain because not to touching her hurts way more. But yes the duet is when I really lost it. I don’t even mind it reusing previous scenes in the movie because it shows they sadly can’t make anymore memories, but they’ll never forget the love in these. How anyone likes her with Rolfe more is beyond me. Smith almost died taking a bullet for her dad, while Rolfe flat out kept trying to change her into who he wanted

Because the new CEO laid off all the animators that did THEE best work in these movies and in the industry to merge Pixar with Disney and bring about 3D movies you see now. They're more into the new modern generation rather than the classic fairy tale genre and would prefer to bring about Miyazaki films too--anime and 3D movies generate more profit since that's the current trend.

because the last animation movie they mad, did so badly compered to what they thought, that they released that that kind of art is not working anymore, cause when most adult see a traditional drawn movie they thing "for kids" but when they see a 3D movie they think "an adult can watch this" regardless of the type of movie. so Disney releasing where the money at went in that direction, and if you think they are wrong for doing that, well before they merged with Pixar, they were dying like for real, the only thing keeping them from crushing was Pixar, and when their contract with Pixar was ending Disney did the only smart thing they could, they bought Pixar, and give them foll control over Disney. also if you are wondering what animation i was talking about, it was the princesses and the frog, and i know what your saying "but that is a great movie" and you are right, Disney thought it would be a huge success, but it wasn't, even thought it was a great movie and Disney worked really hard on, it was not as successful as i should have been, or as Disney was hoping it would, so they had to go 3D.

Even so 3D is now a trend, it would be nicer if Disney still make movies applying this style of animation. It's just sincere and classic!

I agree! The animation is so beautiful here as it’s focused on his eyes and eyebrows. I ALWAYS melt at the part when she’s leaning on his chest and his eyes are cut out as if she’s too sad too look into his beautiful blue eyes. I admit I wanted a scene where his jaw isn’t in it either, but I get the point is he’s looking at her even when she can’t look at him. That’s why “Pocahontas look at me” is just as important as the rest of the quote BECAUSE he can’t hold/cradle her or touch her with his hands and can only hope she’ll look at him. The line “If I never held you” is when she wrapped her arms around him and he’s emoting he so badly wants to cradle her in his arms, showing he is here and will protect her from any danger. The part she’s leaning on him she’s actually resting beside his heart, and I can imagine she can feel the heat and heartbeat, as if his heart is on fire for her and that’s what fuels it, warming her cheeks. Plus I also LOVED that they got his shirt wrong in this song. Not gonna lie he looks heavenly in white especially with the sleeves down AND you can even see part of his pectorals! The scene Meeko is cuddling on his leg for a while I thought for sure you could see a part of his abs, but alas no. Plus the color palette used is so beautiful (except the part But still my heart is saying we were right, sorry but he looks like a ghost, I almost had a heart attack the first time I saw it)

The fact they’re the ONLY Disney couple that never got their happily ever after is so disgusting. And no I don’t go for the “Pocahontas represents you can be in love with someone even if you’ll never see them ever again” The sequel should’ve been a beautiful story about 2 lovers who thought they’d never see each other ever again and they simply weren’t meant to be just for fate to bring them back together and if anything their separation has made them even more in love with each other and their love is strong enough to overcome anything!
