Oncidiums - A Look at the Culture and Types

A look at some of my 'Oncidium types' - including intergenerics. How I look after them, decide on their culture based on their 'type' and ways of helping with those decisions.
There have been many 'name changes' in this area and in some cases names have been wiped out and lost.
Different types of Oncidiums and their relatives require different culture regarding temperatures and light levels and some of the name changes have made this more difficult.

This is so informative! My only oncidium just produced 3 spikes thanks to the information I have gotten from videos like this. Best it has done in 17 years!

Finally I found out all about Oncidiums! I couldn't find any other channel as thorough as yours. What I really like is thee extensiveness of your videos. I would rather watch a long vid than a very short one. To me the longer the better, the more information I can use! I especially enjoy your sense of humor and enthusiasm. Thx

Thanks - the videos end when they end - I don't worry about how long they are. (RU-vid used to get funny about long videos and would sometimes put restrictions on your channel but now they seem to favour them).

I've had issues with some parroted and many times bogus information on other's orchid channels. There's rhyme, reason and hands on experience behind your statements. THEN you brought up microclimates. 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 Outstanding! It feels like many do not understand this. Whether in the home, greenhouse or out in the yard, sometimes a mere 12 inches can be the difference between surviving and thriving.
@GrowingOrchidswithRoger
@GrowingOrchidswithRoger 6 лет назад
Microclimates are there - it's just a matter of 'seeing' them - most useful I find is using bright light plants to shade the lower light types. Cooler growers near the floor, warmer ones nearer the roof and high humidity lovers nearest the foggers.

Hello, I'm a new subscriber. I just happened to come across your channel as I wanted to learn more about oncidiums and growing them in my very hot climate, I just got a Sharry Baby.. I learned a lot. Thanks for the great video. Greetings from the southern Caribbean.

Hi Roger, new subscriber here. I'm floating over from my favorite growers' channel, Rick L. Thank you very much for this video...I think Oncidiums might just be my favorite orchids...thanks for teaching me some stuff I didn't know! Actually, there is so much I don't know....this month I am seeing spikes on 2 Oncidiums in my collection...this is a first for me, I think I've been growing them for maybe 9 months? Also, I moved my Miltoniopsis all further away from the windows and all that bright light...didn't know they stress so easily! Btw, you are not just interesting in your channel content but fun for this American to listen to...😊Cara

A very warm climate allows for so many types of orchids to grow well, but there are always some that don't fit in.

Good morning, Very interest and informative video, well I've decided these orchids are not for my climate, no matter how hard I've tried to get my humidity level over 40 its impossible, and the temp are just too high. Anyway I will keep to cattleya and dendrobuims and of course phals. Thanks, Maria K. ps I bought a miltoniaopsis because I love the flower on it, well its going down hill very fast, its lost just about all it root system. I now have it in semihydronic way hoping to help it grow a new root system. Also trying to keep it as cool as possible with the fan on and the ac going in the middle of the day.

Part of building a collection is getting to know what works in your own environment that way, we get 'happy orchids' that don't stress and don't stress 'us' either.

Great video again. My shelob Tolkien has "okika'' added to the name. The leaves have a creamy white edge on them but I think the flowers look the same. Mine is near blooming size. Are the Oncidiums twinkles still oncidiums?

Hi Roger I love your organised little space for all of your special orchids. My question .. how do you water your orchids and how long does it take? Do you have a long nozzle watering system or do you have to move the pots around to have access to them? And I love your 'Yeah' every now and then. Love your videos .. thank you so much! Elaine from South Africa

I do use a sprayer with a long lance sometimes, but I like to pick up each pot/mount when watering as it gives me chance to have a good look at it checking for problems, bugs etc. This time of year with all the hot weather we are having, watering everything would take a whole day but I do some each day so spreading the load. My mounted orchids take about an hour each day. To water my pots, I just tip water through the pot several times until completely soaked and the same with the mounts - just pour water over them until thoroughly soaked.

Roger's Orchids that makes sense. I love inspecting my orchids on a daily basis. I am sure you find working with them to be very therapeutic. I am still a newby on growing so pick up new tips with watching videos. I mostly have Phals which I keep indoors, but have Dendrobiums and Oncidiums which I bring indoors in winter and replace under a covered verandah in summer. Our night-time temps have been reaching 4○ which is out of character here, so do not want to take any chances. Thank you again

Roger, I find it so strange that the few sharry babys (sherry?) That I have smelled in different shops maybe 2 or 3.. I have never smelled anything 😭. Is there a certain time they smell?
@GrowingOrchidswithRoger
@GrowingOrchidswithRoger 5 лет назад
These seem to put out the strongest fragrance in late morning into early afternoon but they need a change to higher light around that time of day to perform best. Mine are best when the sun comes out during what was a dull day.

Tahoma Glacier is a glacier on Mt. Rainier. The current Intergeneric genus for it is Aliceara. Name changes occur as more evidence is generated including DNA that suggests that too much reliance on floral features which have evolved, at least in part, in response to pollinator selection. The environment (including pollinators) can drive convergent evolution (less related species come to share similar features). One of the best studied examples are Carribean Anoles (lizards). The species on each island have been found to be more closely related to each other despite individual species on each island that share similar ecological niches looking more similar.

My Sharry Baby has re bloomed consistently with new growth that now I have a pretty big specimen plant. It probably needs dividing but I'm scared to do that. However I must be doing something wrong because the leaf tips get dark spots and then the tips turn brown. Do you know what I'm doing wrong? Light is from an eastern window with slight direct sun in early morning. Fertilize with MSU as recommended. Thanks
@GrowingOrchidswithRoger
@GrowingOrchidswithRoger 7 лет назад
Leaf tips that turn brown can be several things but is often too much fertiliser - it can also be the result of dry air. If you divide it try and make sure that there are new growths on all the pieces and new roots are visible too.
