I can't believe I've been wasting so much time sleeping when I could be learning!

Hey Rob, i just graduated as an industrial engineer absolutely hating it with my whole body for the last 4 years, i pretty much got forged into a choice when i was 16 and didnt really draw much in my teen years, so i kinda got talked into the engineering. Now i am 21 and aspiring to be working in the entertainment illustration sector, i really want to be the guy creating those fantasy creatures and sceneries people love in movies or games, it just feels right to me and i really have been knowing it for much longer already, just havent had the courage to tell people, but now i have. The problem i face right now is that i dont really have the possibility to go to an art school. I usually schedule my day around learning to draw and watching tutorials and stuff when i take a break right now, but i feel lost in a way since my drawingskills arent really good yet to be honest. I am facing this giant quest of getting good at what i would love to do and entering the industry. I just wanted to thank you for the videos you do since it really gives an honest description of the life as an artist, hope i can live it too one day :)
@RobBrownTV
@RobBrownTV 7 лет назад
Hey no worries at all, I do understand the pressure for sure, but I did not start drawing for a goal in entertainment design until I was 22. I think you have a solid plan, keep doing tutorials, and pressing on your skill set. Try to make the most of your time by really concentrating on the fundamentals first. You got this!
@Alex-jx8ez

Art school will not teach you how to draw or paint, I would know, I’m an art student. Everyone at art school is online watching tutorials bro, you’re not at any less of an advantage. Just work hard at your portfolio, you can do it

Very insightful advice! I have a bad habit of pushing myself to the breaking point smh. But I suffer from medical problems that sometimes can keep me down for days at a time sigh. So I try to take advantage of every moment that I feel well enough to work on art. Sometimes out of fear of falling behind in my projects and/or goals but mostly because I love what I do and miss it when I can't. But, as you said, it's a good idea to pace yourself, so I'm definitely going to take that to heart. Thanks again for the info and a look into the professional side of a art career. I'm working on it but I have a long ways to go before I reach where you're at in it ;-) lol
@RobBrownTV
@RobBrownTV 7 лет назад
I think pace is the key. I noticed my drawing hand can last forever if I give it a rest every 30-45 minutes for a few minutes. Keep at it Dale, and don't over do it when it comes to health, be in it for the long haul.

HI there Rob, this was great! At the beginning of this year I got a junior position as a concept artist at a local game studio in South Africa (there aren't that many..) However for 2 years before applying I was self studying concept art while taking part in a full time game design course for three years (No drawing involved in the GD course). Coding and making the game isn't really my passion, Concept art is and that's what drove me to pursue this career. I have been working here for around 4 months and have started to feel a slight decline in my confidence as an artist and the main reason for this is my lack of experience in general. Being around other artists who have 10 years+ experience is great as you learn new things everyday! However I find myself comparing my skills to these monsters on a daily basis which results in the slight lacking in confidence... I love concept art and every now and then I find myself hitting a wall and climbing over it. I was wondering if you could share any advice for Juniors in the industry - this video was amazing and gave me some insight into fitting into the Concept artist lifestyle. I'm sure it's just a 'me' problem with self doubt but any advice would be spectacular! Thanks.

I'm nearly done with school and I'm a bit stuck between going to university at first and studying information design (I don't know if it will be a waste of time ) or if I should just straight up first attended this Concept art and design school ? and as a matter of interest , you're freelance concept artist right :) ?
@RobBrownTV
@RobBrownTV 7 лет назад
Hiya Zakkiya, I have been full time as a freelance concept artist for 9 years ). When you go to school, I think the fastest path would be to choose a program where you learn photoshop, 3-d, drawing, design, and graphics. If you have strong skills in those areas, it does not matter what they call the degree.
@zb5436
@zb5436 7 лет назад
Thank you very much sir !! I guess it makes alot of sense to start off with learning the programmes rather than just skipping to an advanced concept art school without any solid knowledge on certain programes

You're a monster (in a seriously good way), I have no idea how you manage to do it. Wake up at 5?? Daaaaamn I get horrible shoulder pains from drawing just for like 3-4hrs at the time, not to mention I get so easily distracted / bored / tired. But if you can do it (and obviously, everybody else lol) seems I gotta lean too. For example, I work really well in an office, where I'm amongst people, but there's a productive and silent atmosphere. At home I just kinda get too lonely when I have to go away from everyone else,but distracted if I work in a common space... Uhh, I guess I really gotta toughen my self up a bit. Thanks for the motivation!
@J0esus
@J0esus 7 лет назад
If you're getting shoulder pains after a few hours definitely try and adjust your drawing set up. I've had various RSI issues over the years and they were all solved by adjusting small things like desk/chair height.
@RobBrownTV
@RobBrownTV 7 лет назад
Now that I watch the video again, I do think I did not play up the breaks I take enough. Also, I think it's unclear that this is not all the time. This schedule is more during peak production. I get distracted about every 45 mins, grab coffee, tea, check instagram etc. haha. That said, yesterday was a 730am to 10pm, with 2-3 hours of breaks. Regarding your shoulder, experiment by placing more weight on your elbows instead of trying to suspend the whole weight of your arm from your shoulder. Get some soft pads so you don't rub hard on your elbow tips. You should also try lowering your chair, so your elbows support more as they rest on the desk.

@RobBrownTV
@RobBrownTV 8 лет назад
It should work for you, hopefully. It's almost impossible to work a normal day considering many clients are in different time zones, and they (unintentionally) throw a lot of kinks in a regular 9-5 day with phone calls, updates, and emergency requests. I think of my day as pretty much three shifts that are a couple hours long each.

I want to be a concept artist and my drawing skills are okay but what I've noticed is that a lot of concept artists draw digitally and I only know how to draw with a paper and a pencil so to do concept art do you have to know how to paint digitally?
@RobBrownTV
@RobBrownTV 7 лет назад
Eventually you do need to know photoshop. But don't let that stop you. Pencil is a great way to do concept art. Check out the dinosaur concept art from Jurassic park for motivation!

Hi, Rob! I would just like to ask what course did you take in College? I'm already in my last year taking engineering but I want to make art as my career. I was thinking of getting into Animation or Illustration. What advice can you give me? Thanks!
@RobBrownTV
@RobBrownTV 7 лет назад
I took a lot of drawing, and product design. I also took 3-D basics, art history, design history, architecture and graphics. Basically anything that made me think of how to draw, and how to design, I took it. If you can, get anatomy drawing, and storyboarding too.

I want to go into the military but debating weather to go into active or reserve, could I go to college in ROTC but was thinking also going to become a concept artist and being in the national guard or doing active duty for 4 years and then get out to be a concept artist

Any drawing and painting class you can get your hand on is great. Also classes in photoshop, and computer graphics. There are probably some cool classes in biology that could help you if you wanted to be a creature designer, also classes in architecture are good if you want to become an environment designer. Fashion can be good too.

Hi, I'm a french student who want to go in 3D animation/art by computer. Today, I do my last year in a highschool and I must to choice my futur school. But I'm hesitant between animation and engeneering because I'm a very good student ( high mark) and I'm affread by the job in animation (low earning but expensive school, unemployement...). Also, i don't pratice drawing, I pratice a little 3D on my computer with 3Ds Max if you know. Can you give me some advices and for you which must I do ? Thank you
@RobBrownTV
@RobBrownTV 7 лет назад
I can't tell you which has more opportunity, but I can say, do what you imagine will make your life more enjoyable, and go after it with all your energy. If you love engineering, and animation, maybe there is a middle ground, like physics engines. I do know the animation people that I see, pretty much think about animation all day, nearly every day, so when you picture your future as an animator see if that fits into it.

Hahah.. honestly, not really learn as in like taking notes and studying. But, if you play it softly and as you doze off, you will pick up little things here and there. ..I think your teacher would be sad if you tried it in class.

How does one become an art director? Why arent you an art director?
@RobBrownTV
@RobBrownTV 7 лет назад
Being an art director is a tough job, I was one for a minute at Oddworld. Art Directors manage art and artists, but don't get much time to actually do art. I like to do art way more than scheduling art tasks, and assessing if artists are doing a good and efficient job.

Hey Rob, I love your videos, and this one is awesome. It's fantastic but I have a quick question. What if you have other things in your life? Like spending time with your awesome girlfriend? Or maybe like hobbies or activities that can feed into your art (like music or martial arts?) Please understand, I'm not advocating to work less. No no no no no . Sometimes I worry about spending too much time on art and neglecting other aspects of life that complete me as a person (like maybe just enjoying a cup of coffee with a good friend.) I actually had an incident a few months ago where I was working hard on my art and I didn't want anyone to disturb me. A friend of mine got into an accident and he asked me to come and visit him, and I was making it difficult for us to meet because he had to fit into my art schedule. I had to have a moment where I could snap out of it and realize that my friend was genuinely in trouble and needed me. I took that afternoon off to see him and I don't regret it. It made him feel better and it was a great day. But I'm curious what your thoughts are.
@RobBrownTV
@RobBrownTV 7 лет назад
I think you are right. What does not come across well in this video is how I deal with real life too. Not gonna lie tho, I do spend less time with family and friends than I should and I will probably have regrets about that in the end. If you are working full time in a studio you will have more free time on a regular basis. If you are freelancing, you will take work as it comes, so you might have work for 30 days straight, and then a full week off. Definitely keep your relationships healthy during the art process.
