Primary to me is to help you guys get a foot up. In 10 years nobody will give a shit about a brush I sold on paetron, but if they get a job because one of these tips, they hopefully will remember me as someone who cared ;).

1:03 listen up folks. Man just gave LIFE advice. You will always be criticized no matter what you do. Its how you deal with it that makes you an adult. My question is that I notice a TON of 3d artist somehow "have" to be ace concept artist. to me Id rather be good at 3d art/animation because frankly ive always been terrible at drawing. Dont like how one goes with the other.
@RobBrownTV
@RobBrownTV 7 лет назад
You hit it on the head. There are subtleties in the industry when it comes to concept creation, and I think people have blurred the line between designing and implementing. Both are extremely important, both require a mind for problem solving and design, but one is project facing, and one is fan facing. Honestly, I believe advanced drawing skills will play a much smaller role in content creation in the next several years.
@road121111
@road121111 7 лет назад
Hi :) can you explain whats one is project facing, and one is fan facing?
@Juusokakku
@Juusokakku 7 лет назад
TikiShootah Agreed. 3d artists should be allowed to remain pure 3d artists and 2d artists to be 2d artists. It doesn't hurt to know a little bit of the other, but both are such demanding skillsets on their own that I'm sure everyone would be better off with a 2d artist working together with a 3d artist. To add to that, even if you can do both you can't do both at the same time
@RobBrownTV
@RobBrownTV 7 лет назад
Fan facing is when the art has a bit more polish and hype, it is designed to get everyone excited about how cool the game will be. ..project facing is when the art is designed to show someone in the studio how to build something or how to move forward to produce an object or scene. Project facing sketches are often more loose, and less dynamic, but they show more design of how things should work.

Very true! I love receiving critiques, but my art buddy hates it. It always hurts my heart a little when I see him get frustrated and angry that hes not improving - but he denies and refuses any kind of critique and/or advice.

I want to say how thankful I am you put this wealth of information online. I DO struggle immensely with detaching myself with my art. I feel like, if my art sucks--- I suck, if people critic--- they're critiquing me etc. A great reminder of knowing you are a person and the drawing is just a drawing not a piece of your soul. This is a great way to overcome the dreaded fear of perfectionism which leads to procrastination. If I want to be a professional concept artist, I have to first learn this. Thank you master.

This advice is so simple, but so hard to follow, yet it’s so important to take. It’s always difficult for me to step back and look at my art analytically, so having a wake up call from someone giving a critique or having someone like you remind me to take a few steps back is always appreciated. Great video! :)

Also.... This is an awesome video. For people that don't get it, a breakdown of the concept is: 'Thank you for your feedback, can you tell me (Teach me) some more? I'll get right on it...*works ass off*'. Excuses = no growth.

Great advice. I notice I do put some emotional investment into my work because I think I'm doing really well, and when someone comes and critiques it, I sometimes just say 'okay got it' without actually analysing the advise and asking specifically what they mean. I think it has to do with an artists pride. I'll definitely remember your words and try not to take every critique personally when I'm in the industry. Thank you!

Great psychological perspective on the drawing process, I like your ideas. It is quite true that spending time on a drawing exactly requires you to invest yourself and investing your emotional self is the best way to appeal to the emotional self of others and when a recursive process of improvement comes along further down the way, it is required that you let go of the old self that draw that image and that you pick it up where someone else left it (your old self) and bring it a step further more into a better 'feel' of the art's intention and purpose. Thank you for sharing.

I came from watching your Learning Patience, Secret Drawing Tips For Concept Artists video. It hit me, that I hit these mental blocks so many times when I'm drawing and I'd get the urge to do something else. I've truly wanted to conqure this and that video/message/tip was kind of the push that I needed to hear so that I know that there's no escape from it, only that it needs to be pushed through with consistency. Looking forward to wathing more of your tips and videos. Subscribed!

Hey, that is great news. It took me a long time to realize that 'drawing pain' that happens when I hit a skill barrier, is what made me better, the next time. There is no going around them, there is only push through and learn. When I hit a barrier, I often dive into it with lots of revs, and fast iteration. I try not to dilly dally too much trying to polish anything that I am learning on if I suspect the root of the task is off, I just keep going at it with quick sketches trying to pry loose the breakthrough.

What you said in his video really applies to a whole slew of professions. Critical Reflection & Taking feedback. Doesn't matter if I'm studying my masters, serving the military, video games, practicing fencing, exercising: the ability to think critically on what you do, what you did, as well as the ability to accept and listen to constructive feedback is invaluable in every aspect of your life.
@RobBrownTV
@RobBrownTV 7 лет назад
Hey thanks for that insight. I think you are right. Being able to get a lesson from feedback is pretty much the key to getting better at everything. Even if the feedback is wrong, it happened for a reason, I always look into that reason.

This is great advice. I've been pestering more experienced arists for critique (I started dabbling in art 10 months ago), and when they say "Oh, it's great for your level" I usually ask them to critique the piece like it was another professional's work, even if it means tearing it apart. I've seen drastic improvements in my skill. Here's hoping I'll be able to do semi-professional work soon.

In addition to this excellent advice: learn that there actually are people who do *not* have your best interest at heart and will criticize today the very thing they told you to do yesterday, or who simply have a completely different taste and want to force you to conform to theirs in every detail and would like to control every single brush-stroke if they could, which just chokes all life and creativity and playfulness out of you. If you are not sure which kind of advice it is - constructive or destructive - a good test is to ask them which aspect they like, what is already working for them. If they can quickly point to e.g. your line work, or choice of color, or how you rendered this or that detail - then that's someone who has your best interests in mind and genuinely wants to help you acquire even more skill than you already have. If they can't think of anything positive to say at all or claim that there would be absolutely no point in giving positive feedback or mock you for requesting it - you'll know to take what that person says with a big grain of salt. Even the people who do mean very well sometimes just forget to talk about the things that work and are good (which is ALSO super helpful to hear because then you can do that more in future works), so if you ask them about those you'll get helpful rounded feedback that is also not so crushing for the spirit. Because then you'll go out of that conversation thinking "he loved my lighting! now I just have to fix that house in the corner..." So even you you KNOW that person means very well, it's a good idea to ask not just about the things that don't yet work.

Content was a bit different than I expected from the title, but great nonetheless. This is a criminally underrated channel, I don't know how it doesn't have at least 100X as many subscribers. One topic I'd be very interested to hear your thoughts on is what sort of curriculum a "self-taught" artist might follow in their first year--or first 3 years--of study. Maybe that's a lot to ask, and I know there is a wealth of information out there, I've just been struggling to give it all some sort of framework or structure to follow (if art school is not an option).

Not quite click bait but close ;). Thanks for the compliment! .. I've talked a bit in some of the streams about how to hack, but never officially, I think it would be a good topic though. Typically, the flow I know is: Perspective Basic Shapes>Drawing Basic Shapes> Lighting Basic Shapes> Perspective Compound shapes> Drawing Compound Shapes> Lighting Compound Shapes> Design Theory> Composition> Advanced Perspective> Drawing Environments> Advanced Composition> Basic Material Rendering> Advanced Color and Lighting.

I wrote the lessons from the video in a more logical order for me. 1. Accept Critique, don't make excuses. Detach yourself from your art, that's gonna make it easier for you to accept the critique. Avoid saying "yeah but" because places you in a position/mindset where you don't believe the advice being given. 2. Don't answer right away, try understand what they're saying. Make clarifying questions to be clear on the advice. 3. Implement the advice, get back right away.

For me, when someone gives feedback after i drew something for a long time and put a lot of effort to it, I'll take it as an advantage to make the artwork better. I mean after all, i put so much effort into the artwork. Why not elevate it even more so that it'll looks even better. Cuz at least for me, I would want something I worked hours for to be the best that i can do. A little different perspective for those who get really sad after a critique like me Xp

You made a distinction here that beginners might overlook. Being critiqued by those with a skill level that is better than your own. People starting out, often will get feedback from everyone especially those who don't even paint. Then feel wrecked when someone states a less than positive opinion.

I personally think doing more faster poses are better than fewer long ones. The reason being is that you don't want to spend detailing time on a foundation that is not almost perfect. ..but, I think it's a balance too.

Yeah there is a tough middle ground where you are good enough to make the idea read, but you are smart enough to know it can get better. If you can surround yourself with some other artists. There were a lot of really good tips on communication skills in this video! I view some of this to be a bit dangerous. There is such a thing as bad feedback, or feedback that shouldn't be utilized. You addressed this a bit by saying to surround yourselves with artists who are better than you. Waiting and digesting information and following up feedback with questions is very good advice. I also admire your ability to communicate your thoughts. Your emphasis on speed is a little troublesome to me. Getting good at what you do faster than your peers could be viewed as a sign of success, but there is virtue in taking your time, or understanding that some things just take time, no matter how they're done. Many great successes and real knowledge come from what you have actually learned yourself. Another person, an "expert," can give you a piece of knowledge, and you can then give that piece of knowledge to someone else, but you haven't actually earned that knowledge for yourself. You could talk to the expert, you could ask them deep questions and have long heartfelt conversations with them. You could listen to their stories, and spend a lot of time thinking about what they say, but what you learn from them (although valuable) is just a shell of the more important thing that they CAN'T pass on: their experience. Like I said, this video is a good first step for people wanting to be able to take feedback and learn to communicate, but for many, I'm afraid it will send them down the wrong road. Thank you for sharing your views :)

I can see that. Each artist has their drive, mine is fairly intense and needs a cocktail of various emotions to spin up. I also have to consciously slow down during some phases of the process to get it right, so I definitely see your perspective.

This is something I try to tell people many times and they don't get it, many people get too emotional about their work. I would add just one thing, if you know you are right and can't explain it to a client, do it the way they want, even if you know it's wrong and then show them the difference and let them see you are right. You can also tell them that if it turns out you are right, then you should be paid for the extra work. If they still persist, then just let them have the bad work and tell them not to be credited but take the cash and who cares :)

I like it. And if you really like helping people but also want credit and good pay, become an art director ;).

Okay thanks! I got the book on my iPad and have drawn some of the images in there.. Is it necessary to learn all the technical names for body parts or do I just focus on drawing them? I'm sorry for asking so many questions :)

I don't think I've ever struggled with criticism. I like improving so whenever someone would tell me what to do I would do what I could to fix it, although asking for help will probably help me a lot more than just accepting what they tell me.

That is a good attitude, keep it up. Don't be afraid to qualify what they say and ask questions. I think a lot of people are good at spotting fixes, but the real gold is being able to hear how to correct them.

Rob Brown, hey, I understand that we all have a different journey. We all start on our path at different times in life. I was just curious, how old were you when you attended Art Center?
