I hope experienced spey casters have pity on our souls and remember the first time they tried it!!! It's like golf, when you do it right, it feels effortless. Anytime you try too hard, it doesn't work out so well. Andrew was an excellent teacher. He and Confluence Outfitters do a Spey Camp where you can really immerse yourself in spey. This style of fishing is so relaxing and fun. The takes are absolutely fabulous and tactile. I am hooked on spey! Hope you viewers might give it a try or if you already do this, nod with the knowing. It was so fun spending the day with you Eric! You are a good fishing buddy. Trying new fly fishing things is good, requires a bit of humility, but is ultimately a path to fun!

Ha, I'm sure I'll get some "helpful" advice on this one. It is what it is and you're right, we all started at some point. Most of us don't film it. Thanks again, it was a wonderful experience.

Welcome to Spey! I just started with this a year or two ago and it’s tough but once you get the basics down it’s much easier and super fun. When everything connects it’s pretty incredible and one can see how effortlessly one can fish all day. The tug is the drug for sure

I started spey fishing this year. I really enjoy it. Even small fish get your heart racing when they hit. My rods are 6 wts for steelhead. Im planing on getting a 4wt trout spey for the lower sac soon. Once you get the casts down its effortless.

Right on, I'm planning to start with a 6wt for steelhead and would consider a lighter trout spey down the road. I was casting a 3wt Sage. I don't remember the model.

Nice! I picked up spey casting last year. It's a ton of fun but different skill set. But it's a nice change at times from euro and dry fly fishing. When you get a really aggressive eat on the spey, it's quite thrilling!

And if you want a fly combo that works for trout spey in NorCal, try Eric's thin mint jig streamer with a little nymph like a Frenchie or Bird's Nest trailing by about a foot. If I can catch fish with it, with my mediocre skills, YOU can too!

@@driftstone I think it could work on some of my bigger tailwaters, but, I am primarily excited about doing it for smallmouth bass on some of our bigger waters that are tough to wade across on

I was using a Sage 3wt, I believe 11.5ft. I don't remember what model it was.
