Bit of a coincidence that his business partner who also was found not guilty. Was killed by a car while cycling only last week. This stinks just like the missing Malaysia airliner that hasn’t been found . Who was on that plane ?

However strange this may seem, as a lifetime skipper I know this can happen and at 4AM a knock down (complete capsize of the yacht) due to a sudden squall or (small) tornado could go unnoticed until it hits you even to the most experienced crew. A tragic event but for those of you who have not lived at sea, spare me your rattling nonsense comments. People were lost in this crazy event, most likely 7 and no-one, not the skipper nor the crew would ever want this to happen. May God Save Their Souls! For some serious answers: 1. Yes, very normal for a large vessel like this to stay for anchor outside of the harbour. 2. No, it was not too close to the shore being in 50 Mt deep water (quite deep actually). 3. No, sometimes these weather forecasts do not give you warnings for this and even so, it would make no difference as where to anchor off. Would still think this is a safe place for a yacht this size. 4. At 4 in the morning there is no physical anchor watch and even if, he could have been completely surprised by what happened.

Some serious people of that boat...one of which had upset a lot of people in the US government,also the Morgan Stanley chair.

Being a multimillion dollar vessel (yacht) there is probably millions of dollars in liability here for the owner(s) and victims and families. The insurance company will pay to have the yacht refloated and then the investigation will be undertaken. Italy is a seafaring nation and they probably have one of the premier maritime investigation agencies in the world. May take some time, but they'll get the answers.

So sad, my thoughts go to all those concerned including the families of the crew members, who are trained for these scenarios but it never prepares you fully, it must've been incredibly frightening. I hope everyone recovers quickly and that all those lost are returned to their families. This will have a huge impact on the yachting community as it is a close knit one. There are lots of ugly comments coming up on SM but please remember, it's not about being rich or being poor, the crew are young people working their butt off, very few of them come from rich backgrounds. They are hardworking youngsters earning a wage whilst seeing the world and I am the mother of one of them. The Med is seeing a number of storms this month. We received a call last week whilst she was on late watch duty and she was scared, the boat was being thrown around, we could see and hear the crashes, clangs, smashing all around her. Thankfully the storm passed and guests, crew and vessel were unharmed. My heart goes out to all concerned.

They seem far more concerned about this than a migrant ship with 700 people

Terrible event, very sad. But it seems to be getting A LOT of media coverage. If the people missing weren't rich and powerful, it would be a one-day story.

The Bayesian was the tallest masted yacht in the world, there is, or was a formula for mast heights that equates the length of the vessel, I don't know what that is but this seems like they might have ignored that formula, it is something like the mast should not be more than 25% higher than the length, its something like that, anyone knows for sure what it is, and why, I'm assuming stability,

What might not have helped is that it is reported to have the tallest mast in yachting. The leverage resulting would have been an issue.

Why is it news when rich people die, for example, when the sub crashed/imploded? Im pretty sure some regular people have died in the Mediterranean Sea this summer. Most people dont have "super yachts"

The yacht can be lifted with a floating crane although air is running out in any airpockets if there is a survivor inside.

A £14 million super yacht sank taking on water during a waterspout. The super yacht must have been anchored with two anchors, one at the bow and one at the stern. Modern super yachts are built for pleasure and not for rough sea. With a bow and stern anchor, the yacht couldn’t swing away from the wind and like most pleasure yachts she has a low stern with sliding glass doors allowing the waves to enter the cabin.

It must’ve been a really big waterspout if it sunk a sailboat that large. I was on a boat that was almost hit by a waterspout on Lake Michigan 25 years ago. We didn’t see it coming bc it was a fast moving storm + the skies were so dark & full of moisture it was the same color as the water. It’s very violent rocking up and down (more like slapping)I for 5-10 seconds then nothing other than rough seas. It probably went down because of the mast.

This is definitely extremely weird. I have worked on boats all my life at 68 and i have never known of a large modern sailing vessel being lost due to bad weather.

It's strange that in this day and age when everyone has a smartphone, no one took a photo of the sight.

My late friend was sailing from FL to Sicily. While on the move in the Med a wave out of nowhere slammed into his 67 foot boat and broken of a mast. His was not some 246 feet tall mast and at anchor.

The Italian Coast Guard normally notifies all boats at sea on record, of severe weather conditions, well in advance.

So sorry to hear this news. Was pretty hairy here last night in Naso, as well, we’re in the mountains. Some flooding and landslides and mess everywhere. There’s been light thunder and lightening for the past few days but last night it all came suddenly.

They've been down there for two days now struggling to get inside, surely it would be easier if they brought it up off the sea bed and to port.

So who owns HP ? hmm , some people that might not be too happy that they lost their court case against 2 UK tech guys that had been ongoing for over 8 years.? Hmm , who could that be ? Could it be Blackrock , Vanguard and State Street corp ? Wow , a quick look says it is. So the 2 UK guys lost their lives within 42 hours of each other after walking free from US corporate law case only 2 months previously. And the big players behind HP are the 3 investors listed. If you know your stuff this will interest you. If you don't , then don't worry about it , just move on.

So are waterspouts common in this region? Asking people who may actually live around there. Also curious as to what is happening behind the scenes while this story floods the networks.
