Any time you produce a "Best of" list you are bound to create controversy. I haven't seen every grain elevator on the Canadian prairies but I've seen enough to compile a list of my favorites -- these are elevators which either stand out to me for some reason or hold some personal significance.
I could have easy added another dozen to my list but this video was already getting plenty long. If there is enough interest in the topic, I would love to do a Part Two and add to my list.
What are you favorite grain elevators? Let us know in the comments!
As always, thanks for coming along for the ride!

Nice to see you Dan. Thanks for taking us forest dwellers on another visit to the prairies. The photos remind me of the fragility of life. Now that I'm 75...

It's so true. I'm just working on my next video for release on Monday and it's another look back to a trip from 2007 and seeing how much we have lost in just fifteen years is a stark reminder of how fast it goes by. I have so much I want to see in the world and I already know I don't have enough time left to do it all.

Close to my heart. I also grew up in the Coaldale district from 1945 until early '60s. Drove by the Broxburn elevator many times over the years. Always enjoyed seeing them whenever driving past them, especially the Vulcan elevator row of days gone by.

Coaldale was a great place to grow up. When I left high school, my plan was to get my teaching degree and then come back to teach chemistry and physics at Kate Andrews. Funny how life takes you in completely different directions, all based on some small decisions along the way.

That was an excellent recall into some of our abandoned elevators. I worked on repairing them for two summers out of Lethbridge. There is a restored elevator in Acadia Valley just south of Oyen which is open in the summertime.
@DanOCan

That must have been a very interesting job. Acadia Valley will certainly be included when I do this again. I love the paint job on that one. Have never been by when it is open, though.

I only live a few miles from Farrow I remember George Randle quite well he was a cantankerous old cowboy who owned the land surrounding that elevator... We currently own the Herronton elevator and still use it to store our grain. You are more than welcome to come out anytime to take photo's of it!
@DanOCan
@DanOCan Год назад
Thanks! I never met George but heard the stories -- enough to know to not walk in and just photograph it from the roads. I've been out to Herronton a few times, including one of my first ever drone flights. It's a great one and I'm happy it is in good hands.

I had permission to shoot Farrow, such a great little ghost town. The story I heard regarding was to gain acess for an augur to remove the grain remaining.

The SPRING VALLEY elevator caught my eye--because it was a huge loss as the south-west view reminded me of 100s of classic reddish-brown elevator scenes, now mostly gone--so I decided to update you and readers of the best elevators in each Prairie Province . A few details: Many classic elevator scenes now just a memory Like FORGAN SK. Anyways the details of weathered elevators in my lists is concerning --not much time left- recent travels show me how bad the elevators have become ...To enjoy the prairie serenity with old largely unaltered elevators is a direct connection to our past, photos do not convey the feeling as being in a setting with old elevators. Anyways the lists are rated from the most photogenic to the least because of site context, rural scenery with few or no modern intrusions, the more angles available the better for all types of photography. It was the railway abandonment blitz starting in 1975 and accelerated from 1977 thru 1984, was one thing that destroyed a lot of classic elevators, now all the progress since has really thinned out the elevator numbers, less than 400 wood crib elevators on original sites in Sask . The lists do not include relocated elevators from their railway point, and does not include private built elevators on farms. It is a shame that in Saskatchewan there is no four or five elevator row scenes intact but 35 years ago there was a dozen or so places that would rival INGLIS MB. M A N I T O B A Top-25 ---->TILSTON with the old Pool and Lake elevators, two weathered elevators with ghost hamlet site context, Elva was number one. ---->INGLIS with five elevators to help rekindle what was lost in Western Canada. ---->SNOWFLAKE Two old elevators, the old Federal is in rough shape, small hamlet is here. ---->LYLETON One old reddish-brown Pool elevator remains and is in rough shape ---->McCONNELL interesting ghost hamlet with two weathered elevators. ---->BROOKDALE small hamlet with two old elevators ---->LENORE In a small hamlet, weathered white paint is almost off this Pool elevator, reddish brown color shows more now. ---->BARNSELEY Two eld elevators, the UGG and Pool have much weather damage. ---->HARMSWORTH very old metal clad elevator in a lonely setting ---->HELSTON Old Pool elevator in secluded area with lots of trees, reddish brown paint is weathered. ---->BRADWARDINE small village with this reddish-brown classic Pool elevator with crib annex, metal bins nearby. ---->ISABELLA Interesting weathered PooL elevator with a smaller twin, very old located in quiet hamlet. ---->HOLMFIELD Harrison Milling elevator. ---->NAPINKA Old metal clad Pool and an old Ogilvie elevator. ---->CAMERON very old squat structure with Five Roses Flour lettering. ---->OBERON Old Pool elevator with damaged scalehouse. ---->BEULAH old weathered Pool elevator. ---->COULTER-metal sided elevator along a lonely setting. ---->SILVERTON was a weather beaten UGG, now it was repainted but the checker-top pattern was not done. ---->LENA Pool elevator well maintained in private use. ---->DALNY another metal sided Pool elevator . ---->SINCLAIR semi modernized Pool elevator with an elongated cupola. ---->OAKBURN regular Pool elevator with large weathered wood crib annex, in rough shape. ---->CLEARWATER neat little village with a metal clad Pool elevator. ---->KALEIDA an old Ogilvie elevator in rough condition. A L B E R T A top 25 ---->DOROTHY an old APG elevator, in rough shape but still photographic from many angles and views from high above the slope. ---->ROWLEY near complete hamlet with elevators, station etc, be great if a replica prairie hotel could be built here for B&B. ---->SHARPLES, classic old metal clad elevator with annex and many angles to photograph --a great setting. ---->RALEY super old classic metal clad elevator with small crib annex, great for morning views. ---->MEETING CREEK, another tranquil valley setting, with station and two elevators and many angles for good photos. ---->MOSSLEIGH this three elevator setting is better now with an orange painted elevator to represent Pioneer--so contemporary . ---->ESTHER lone Pool elevator in lonely hamlet setting, reddish brown paint makes it classic. ---->BUTZE Lone Pool elevator still has the classic reddish-brown paint. ---->SCANDIA a part of the EID museum, an old Pool elevator. ---->BARDO an old metal clad elevator with balloon annex. ---->BIG VALLEY 1950s Pool elevator with station and village for site context. ---->POE an old National elevator very weathered, still offers good photos despite the junk all around here. ---->SKIFF an old P&H elevator painted yellow, it was reddish brown in 1990s. ---->KINUSO an older UGG elevator in a small village in a small pocket of farmland. ---->SHONTS an old Pool elevator with a steel bin adjacent to it. ---->KIRRIEMUIR The green painted Pool elevator is in good shape, located in small village setting. ---->HERRONTON, a single composite green painted Pool elevator, with logos, harkens back to the '70s. ---->WRENTHAM--an old metal clad elevator and an older green Pool elevator. ---->ALTARIO Not sure if this old white painted UGG still stands, an old hotel makes great site context. ---->NANTON great place with lots of old brick buildings and the restored elevators. ---->ONOWAY an old white painted elevator still stands here. ---->PARADISE VALLEY a small village restored this Pool elevator with add-ons and a museum. ---->THREE HILLS The old P&H elevator is very interesting, the double composite Pool elevator has wood siding. ---->ACADIA VALLEY Pool elevator was restored with the green paint that many people remember from the recent past. ---->DEWINTON two older elevators in a small place. T H E SASKATCHEWAN list to go on the video called Episode 234

The lines crossing out at the top of this entry makes it difficult to read, some glitch when arrow prompts were set. Both of the Alberta and Manitoba lists are updated to the best of my knowledge . Anyone who has traveled in recent years knows full well that there are regions without old or older elevators. Places like RADWAY & HILDA could start the next 25 for Alberta, you will start to run into elevator scenes that are average or do not have a very good site context. This goes to show how much was demolished in the last 50 years.

@@schentahsheirlaenard4061 The one in Alberta I will always regret missing was McNab. Located down in a small valley, it was just a short distance off the highway but hidden from view unless you ventured off the asphalt. I'm not sure when it was demolished but I missed it by a few months.

@@DanOCan About this former Pool elevator, it was hiding in a coulee, and yes I missed it on my trip in 1990, several years later with communication with other travelers that updated with me on what they saw and the odd elevator came up, McNAB was one of about six that I missed, so I made a list of all points that were skipped as many trips were so tight for time, the aerial photo office was great to confirm elevator locations in out of the way places with elevators hiding behind hills or in a valley etc. I was elated to have some new places to visit on forth coming trips. One place was lost less than two months of it being made know to me and that was OBERLIN about nine miles west of Stettler, A bad snow storm happened in October 1999 and I had to cancel the trip, low and behold I was told in January 2000 that both elevators were torched. The Alberta and Manitoba elevator lists are small as far as the good settings go... You could add AZURE, CASTOR and St ALBERT for the scenes that will move into the top 25 when any of those elevators are destroyed. I can't seem to find out if any wooden elevators remain in MANNING, A nice setting that had two Single composite Pool elevators, a mini single comp. elevator for fertilizer, a big 'fat' UGG elevator and an old Cargill. Amazing old post card still kickin' around eBay shows three old classic elevators, about ten years ago I did the detective work for this old photo circa 1950-1954 era and discovered it was PINCHER STATION, Sask Tourism even passed it off in their magazine in the early 1970s as a Sask. scene, but no... The middle elevator was Midland & Pacific Grain Corp. that got me going on finding what place this actually was. Two on eBay right now. 235074252682 235089719714

do you ever wonder how people know their almost home now that most of the elevators are gone across the prairies?

I think we had to develop GPS just to compensate for the demise of the mighty grain elevator. I know they were very heavily utilized for navigation by pilots as well, especially in the WWII era when flight schools were at their peak.
