Our friend Victor Sheppard called us and gave us a pretty big update. He crossed the 900,000 mile mark on his 2014 Toyota Tundra. This means he is close to putting a million miles on another Tundra.

I would love to follow this guy’s experience with a third gen Tundra. I think the TTv6 and 10 spd AT will hold up better than people think. Not 1 million miles, but well over 300k. If nothing else, it would be nice to see what does fail and when. I put 15 - 20k miles per year on my trucks. My ‘22 Tundra is a daily driver with 2 to 3 hour road trips twice a month, towing 8,000 lbs. no issues so far. Just minor wind noise from the RR door gasket. Still have my ‘03 Tundra 4x4 Sport w/ 230,000 miles. Decided to keep it for work around the property. Undercarriage rust is becoming an issue, but the 2UZ-FE v8 and 4 spd AT are still crazy strong.

No, we know what the difference is between a truck that gets driven on lots of short trips and one that accumulates hundreds of thousands of miles of steady state highway cruising. You don't accumlate that kind of mileage by driving a truck in a way that 99.9% of people would. You accumulate those insane amounts of mileage by driving hundreds of miles every day on highways and only highways down in Texas, running parts for the oil industry.

The difference for him is that he obviously uses his truck for some kind of work that requires him to drive extremely long distances and he probably lives in the south (I think he's from the Texas area). What the guy is really demonstrating is the difference between a vehicle that is short-tripped (particularly in very cold climates) and a vehicle that is driven almost exclusively on the highway where it can run at a steady state and accumulate hundreds of thousands of miles without that punishment that comes with lots of cold starts and short trips. Maintenance is also key and we never really got a comprehensive list of maintenance and repairs that either truck required outside of timing belts and fluid changes. For instance, I don't think they ever disclosed if they had to change rear main seals, head gaskets, transmissions, rebuild rear axles, etc.

@@Pickuptrucktalk Driving conditions absolutely do count for something for sure Tim. It's just the breakdown of those conditions that adds up to a vehicles ability to stave off the eventual deterioration due to driving. I'm certianly not discounting the fact that getting a vehicle to 1mil miles isn't an achievement. And lots of credit has to be given to Vic for how he treats and maintains his Tundras imo. And Toyota makes great vehicles, im not disputing that either. All I'm saying like many others are, is that if a significant amount of your vehicles miles are long trip highway miles then you are more likely to be able to achieve much higher mileage on your odo then if you were driving the way most personal vehicles are driven. I will say this. Vic seems to be the perfect guy to be able to test the above argued theory. Considering he has his work Tundra and he also has his personal Tundra. I'm assuming it's going to take him a good bit longer to be able to rack up the same amount of miles on his personal Tundra if possible, but if he's able to get even close with different driving conditions then that might be some great coroberating evidence supporting your theory that 900,000 miles is 900,000 miles. I was able to get my 2008 Nissan Frontier 4.0V6 4X4 to 416,000 miles with the original engine and transmission before it had a serious headgasket issue. And that issue was pretty much my fault due to poor maintenance. But I do mostly attribute that achievement to average daily driven miles of 175 plus of lots of highway, minimal hard driven miles towing and off roading, and timely oilchanges with quality oil and oil filters. Some praise obviously goes to Nissan for making a great truck imo but other manufacturers make great vehicles as well that are also capable of high miles with the right driving conditions imo. And my curiosity of super high mileage vehicles is just figuring out what percentage of that achievement is attributed to the vehicle vs the owner and the driving conditions. Especially when you dig into the weeds on the matter you see that there stories of vehicles out there from many different manufacturers with very high miles.

Yeah you'll definitely never see that with any of the turbo engine Vehicles anymore

I wonder if a new twin turbo engine will last even half that mileage?

I think that depends on whether or not Toyota can solve why crank bearings are failing. It sounds like LSPI is the culprit but that doesn't explain why only some engines are failing. If it comes down to not being able to use any engine oil other than Toyota's, that would be extremely annoying. The biggest cause of LSPI-induced bearing/piston failures is using engine oils with commonly used additives that cause pre-igntion, or excessive oil consumption, which Toyota hasn't been great about.

It's really not that impressive when you break down the miles. 900000 miles in 10 years for and average of 90000 per year. In order to put on 90000 a year it's safe to say highway miles. As a general rule of thumb highway miles equate to roughly 10% of the wear and tear of city driving. For arguments sake let's go with 30%. At 30% we're in the ballpark of 270000 miles of wear and tear that a regular daily driving would see. It's generally not mileage that kills vehicles it's engine cycles. Engine on, warm up to temp, engine off, cools down, engine on, needs to warm up to temp again, engine off. His Tundras are not seeing the same amount of engine cycles as daily city drivers. Engine on, warm up to temp then stays in harmony on the highway for hundreds of miles before it ever gets shut off and goes through another engine cycle.

I agree. He's racking up miles extremely fast. It may have 900k miles but it's still just a 9 year old vehicle.

This is something I've wondered about myself. I was able to get 416,000 miles out of my 2008 4x4 4.0V6 crew cab long bed Nissan Frontier until it blew a headgasket last year in the heat of summer due to low coolant and my damn maintinance procrastination on fixing a small coolant leak. I often wonder how many more miles I could have gotten out of it if I was stellar on my maintenance and continued to drive it daily as my work truck which usually encompasses and average of 175 daily miles driven. Not so sure the newest vehicles out there are up to 1mil miles but I feel like there are probably a lot of different quality vehicles out there aside from just Toyotas that you could get super high mileage out of depending on how you cared for the vehicle and what kind of driving it was subjected to.

People will still hate and say the tundra is junk. Facts are facts, they are just better made trucks. How many domestic trucks get over 700k miles out of a transmission. Most don't even get half that.
@duncdunc76

@Jackmerius_Tacktheretrix how many Tundras 8:56 get 700,000 out of a transmission. No doubt Toyota makes a quality truck but I'm sure there are domestics out there that have similar stories. Don't get me wrong though I'm a foreign vehicle quality believer. My 2008 4X4 4.0V6 Frontier went 416,000 on the original engine and trans before developing a headgasket issue due to overheating from a small coolant leak. And I blame myself for the issue as my poor maintenance of checking fluid levels and letting it leak for too long because I was procrastinating on getting it fixed is what did it in.

Its easy to put 1 million miles on a truck doing hot shot trucking. Now a Nissan Frontier hit a million and it was just a regular work truck. No problems, nothing wrong with it. It was an 07 Frontier. Nissan Titans can easily make it over 500,000 miles with no major problems!! Nissans are just better!!

I owned a 2021 Tundra and the new Tundra interior won't last 200,000mile's. I looked at a used 2022 Tundra with 15,000miles and the exterior/interior and seats was already falling apart. As a loyal Toyota I bought a 2024 Chev trail boss due too I couldn't get over the poor materials in the new Tundra.
