I was reminded with this song that to be in a popular group like this in the 70s you needed a lead singer who can really, really sing. Kansas also comes to mind, Styx, early Journey, Queen, Zep, the list goes on and on.

This song reminds me of being in USAF jet school in late '77. We had nothing but books and radio to entertain us during our down time so any song that got a lot of airplay in later '77 and early '78 takes me back to that fall and winter.

@davidwalter2002
@davidwalter2002 Год назад
The lyrics are amazing, and fit the music/tone of the song so well, all throughout. There's the poetic imagery of "Your eyes have a mist from the smoke of a distant fire." It's kind of lilting, and an almost romantic metaphor. And then there's the bridge, with its hard, rhythmic fury, and the lyrics saying, "It don''t stack up, so slack up and pack up. I just don't care!" Hard hitting consonants "k" and "p" instead of the smooth "m"s of the hook. Brilliant writing. And as you pointed out, the instrumentation is very creative. The organ and guitar, especially, can create so many tones and sounds, and they picked the exact right ones for this song. Very artistic. And, of course, the lead singer's voice. A tortured exclamation from a man who can no longer deny his partner's unfaithfulness. This song hits hard on all the right notes.

It was called the Sanford Townsend Band (no “and” in there) and this song was a huge hit for them, but they were a one-hit wonder. This might be slight exaggeration, but this song IS my childhood. I grew up in Alabama and these guys were out of Tuscaloosa, so this song was on AM and FM radio all over Birmingham in the late 70s and was played constantly on the first Classic Rock station that cropped up in the mid 80s. I have so many memories of this song playing on AM610 while riding the back of the car on the way to school or hearing it the background barbecue joints and pizza places around town. What a great song. Also, ROLL TIDE!

Listen you all, for real. I am currently quite shook myself. I just listened to Pentatonix' release of the Celine Dion song "The Prayer" and am still stunned. I am a piano player and have accompanied some fantastic singers, including two who went and got straight into major Broadway musicals, but this group just floors me. It is not often you get to hear a real countertenor (singing in his head voice notes in the top octave of a piano keyboard) and the arrangement is incredible. You HAVE to listen to this. Just drop everything else - seriously. I am going to listen to that every day to boost my spirits. INCREDIBLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Just listened to this a few days ago, and it is beautiful. My favorite though (and probably always will be ) is " Hallelujah". Like you with The Prayer, I almost need to listen to it every day. They're all phenomenal on this song, and each time I hear it, it makes me miss Avi's amazing bass and beautiful singing voice. Matt has done a really nice job since he joined the group, but there is something so special about Avi's voice that no one could replace (just my opinion).Fortunately he is continuing with his music in his solo career. I could listen to him all day.

They were a one hit wonder....but this song was cowritten by the band and Al Stewart who wrote and preformed "Year Of The Cat."

Amber just killed me! Sanford and Son! Oh man. I grew up on that. I still listen to the theme by the great Mr Quincy Jones.

I absolutely love this song and was jamming to it on Pandora last week. Check out "The Boys Are Back In Town" by Irish band, *Thin Lizzy* . *EDITED TO ADD* - Someone just told me that it's already been reacted to. I try to search beforehand, but often don't find results, but go back later and it's been there for a while. Strange. Anyway, they reacted to it last month.

@@armynurseboy You're right. I just went to their page to search after reading your comment. They did it a month ago. I've been wondering if something goes wrong when I use the search box there, because several times, I get nothing on a particular search, but I go back a few days later and find that it's been there for weeks or months. Oh, well....I'll edit my comment. Thank you.

@@LMmccallL57 They still can do other Thin Lizzy songs. Whiskey In The Jar for example.

Haven't heard this one since the 70s! Yes.. RU-vid only has enough Headline Room to display the Sanford part of your title for this one, so I thought "Are they reviewing Sanford and Son now?!!" And I love Sanford and Son too!

Midnight Special ushered in many of the 70's artists to the masses here in North America. The Old Grey Whistle was similar for most of Europe and the UK.
