One rod. One lure. One hour! This week's mission is to catch on a very windswept Oxford Canal using a 6cm Fox Rage Spikey Shad and a light jig head setup. Enjoy!

The Oxford Canal is 78 miles long and links Oxford with Bedworth/Coventry via the major towns of Rugby and Banbury. A number of fishing clubs and associations control the fishing. In the Oxfordshire region, Oxford itself as well as Lower Heyford to Enslow is largely controlled by Oxford & District AA. North Oxford AS control a short length from Oxford to Kidlington. Kidlington Angling Society control much of the water in the Kidlington region. From Fenny Compton through to Heyford is a long length controlled by Banbury & District AA. Much of the fishing is day tickets on the bank, but much cheaper if you purchase a book via local Oxfordshire and some Warwickshire tackle shops.

Hi Jon what a great little video. It makes me feel so much better knowing that I’m not the only one who has their camera blown over into the water! I mostly only have very limited time so it’s nice to see you getting the most of limited time with three Zander which are not in my section of canal. Very enjoyable. Regards Bill

I know, I know, I know. That was always gonna happen ha ha! Should’ve been in less of a rush to fish, popped the legs lower and tried to weigh it down. More haste less speed! 😬

Great video Jon! I've just started lure fishing and I found your videos to be very helpful. Where on the Oxford Canal is the spot you're fishing in the video? It looks great.

nice video John , could you tell me please , whats your rod n reel set up ? bit different to the Gunki but i guess you need something a bit more powerful
@JonArthur
@JonArthur 4 года назад
Rod’s a really lightweight 6ft 1-5g Savage Gear model that I actually think is softer than my Gunkis and a 2000 Daiwa Sweepfire loaded with 0.06 Jig Silk.
@richrichierich8902
@richrichierich8902 4 года назад
@@JonArthur thanks for the reply , that's a reasonably inexpensive set up , just goes to show you don't have to spend hundreds on gear , lets face it , most of the tackle is aimed at catching the fisherman and not the fish

Enjoyed your latest video and am keen to catch a zander. Is that stretch of the canal a day ticket water?
@JonArthur
@JonArthur 4 года назад
Most of the Oxford is day ticket on the bank and/or controlled by Oxford DAA or Banbury & District AA.
@brianclarke220
@brianclarke220 4 года назад
This bit is controlled by Banbury and District day tickets available from Banbury or Kidlington tackle shops as are full licences.

interesting how many zander you caught .... i know the enthusiasts are keen but frankly a lot of britain’s coarse fishing venues have been destroyed by these ferocious and fast breeding predators .... pity they are in the canal because they actually make great eating .... nice video showing the difficulties of filming on a windy day
@JonArthur

The zander have really taken a hold throughout all the canals I grew up fishing and it’s impossible to reverse that, so I have no problem fishing for them. I grew up canal match fishing but that circuit is sadly all but gone and that’s not because of zander, it’s due to lack of access, increasingly busy towpaths and other factors. Zander are definitely here to stay. Match fishing’s loss is the predator angler’s gain and they offer some great winter sport. One day I’ll hopefully learn the best way to prepare and cook them!

Not sure either i or the canal and river trust agree with you that zander and their affect on fish stocks (especially the humble gudgeon) hasn’t had dramatic affect on coarse fishing especially on canals ... but still enjoy your videos especially you using the same sort of tackle we use to catch walleye (the US zander) over here in michigan ...where they are revered for their fine taste and white flaky flesh .... a bit cod like i would say .... Says a man who dos not understand fishing for them. The Severn has some of the best zander fishing in the country and is also a great coarse venue...add in the Trent, Gloucester canal and a lot more venues that still produce fantastic coarse fishing. I think the stretches that no longer produce have far more problems from Cormorants, Otters and more than from zander. And it was great to see a class match angler going over to the dark side....lol.

@@jdmccartney1 I definitely didn't say zander haven't had a dramatic affect on fish stocks on the canals I grew up fishing. I 100% think they have! The very canal in this video was once full of gudgeon and it's no coincidence the population is probably 1% of what it once was. I merely stated that the demise in the canal match fishing I grew up doing isn't the zander's fault. Yes it is perhaps partially a reason, but there are a whole host of other and bigger factors. I think we have to accept they are part of the water system now and it would be impossible to remove such a successful breeder and eater, certainly the way the C&RT are doing it anyway! :-) I have friends who eat zander and everyone I talk to says they are very tasty fish!
@JonArthur

@@trevorgunning5399 I think narrow and coloured canals are the perfect hunting ground for zander compared to wider canals and rivers. They can chase and round the fish up so much easier on these narrow little waterways and it's no surprise where the shoals of roach are usually found. I'd love to see some underwater footage of zander hunting. Forget these foreign places David Attenborough goes and does his amazing films; get him on the Grand Union or Oxford Canal! :-)
