One Lure - A Load of Surfcasting Fish!

I stuck with one lure for surf fishing a beach rip and caught a lot of fish to show for it! The key was to try different parts of the rip to find the hidden fish. This video is another great example of the power of a properly worked bucktail lure. You can learn more about my new online bucktail fishing course at saltstrong.com/skinner.

Replacement arrived!By the way, I did forget to mention that the original lure did have a decent strike however as most anglers will attest you can get a hit ru-vid.comUgkxCbNOWAGmn6nfbCbJDmasvBq7J38KZNw2 and fish will hang on and release lure. I used the replacement lure yesterday and ran thru a Shimano Waxwing, Kastmaster, Bobber (set to sink). I found the does run deep (I casting on the flats 3.5'). Make sure you adjust your rate of retrieve and rod tip angle (up) to prevent getting snagged on bottom. Used it a couple of times and action was very lifelike (looked like local bait fish for trevally), craftsmanship very good....however eyeball fell out. I asked for replacement and it is on it's way! It was very easy to change out treble to single inline hook.

John, it's great that you consistently land these fish on a jig with a crushed barb. Just goes to show that the correct pressure and a nice bend in the rod will usually see you land the fish with less stress caused to both the fish and the angler. All your fish seem to swim off so strong which is a pleasure to watch. Hopefully more anglers will see these videos and begin to put some of your wisdom to practice. Thanks

I like the speeding up of the video as opposed to editing it out. I live in Boston and do a lot of fishing 40 miles north, either sand beach or in the river close to the mouth of the river. I haven’t bought the book yet but I’ve watched all ur bucktailing videos and my catch rate has increased by quite a bit. I’ll definitely know in the off season when I go back and look at my log. Biggest mistake I made in the past was going to heavy like you’ve said

Skinner, I make no bones about being not only a fan but also a devotee. As someone who is in the infantile stages of producing fishing videos, I'm always trying to pick up on new and enjoyable features from you, Halk and the like. That being said, DON'T CHANGE A THING!! Hahahaha!! The fast forward is cool. Speaking for myself, I like seeing fish being caught, displayed, released and/or bled out for the cooler. The fight is an important part of the action, but fast forwarding through a few fights to provide us with the footage and knowledge that you do works! Thank you!

Hi John! First of all I'm a big fan, and enjoy your content and products. You asked for feedback so here is mine. I enjoy listening to the fish peeling line and personally enjoy watching you fight the fish. I don't mind the ramp up, but the noise of the ramp up is a bit distracting. I rather see the full action than to hear the speed up. I've been fishing from a kayak lately and haven't really found the confidence with bucktails from the kayak yet. Hopefully that changes soon. Thanks for sharing your experience John.

Great video! Bit curious to ask this John..... I fish an area with moving current where the depth varies from 7-15 ft, but can allow as low as a 3/8 oz jig to slowly drop down and trigger a strike. Any particular current speed here you are looking for, to go that much heavier with the bucktail? Or is it simply to get better distance to reach the strike zone?
@JohnSkinnerFishing
@JohnSkinnerFishing 3 года назад
I never go heavier for distance. There's a lot of current and the water drops to easily 20 feet, so this jig with a fair amount of hair works about right.
@colsoncustoms8994
@colsoncustoms8994 3 года назад
This method is pretty much exactly how we fish for striped / hybrid bass below the dam from the bank. Let it fall down through the current, popping it back up so it can continue to have that falling action, and try to get it in quickly before the current swings it into the shallows.

Do bucktail lures work better in the northeast or do we southern folk just not use then the right way? 👀 Asking for a friend 🥸

John, either normal speed or slowing up is fine. Maybe sprinkle in some sped up video of repeated/similar sections.
