"One must imagine Sisyphus happy" Is a quote that has been going around the internet for a while now. But what does it mean? Who originated it? And what can we learn from it?
This is the story of Sisyphus
Thanks to Ted Ed for the animations to tell the story even better!

No, this is your own interpretation. If he pushed the ball in order to obtain perfection he would be chasing after something instead of living in the moment. His punishment is a metaphor for life, not for work or struggle.
@JavierBonillaC

@alaszrar6202 Yeah, of course it's my interpretation. The only thing worrh living for is the search for perfection. Not living the moment? You think then Alex Honnold did not live the moment when he solo-climbed El Capitan? Of course, it's not for everyone. My cousin lives in a pigsty, smokes weed all day, every day, and says he lives in the moment. Maybe his definition is correct. Everyone is free to choose.

“I leave Sisyphus at the foot of the mountain. One always finds one's burden again. But Sisyphus teaches the higher fidelity that negates the gods and raises rocks. He too concludes that all is well. This universe henceforth without a master seems to him neither sterile nor futile. Each atom of that stone, each mineral flake of that night-filled mountain, in itself, forms a world. The struggle itself toward the heights is enough to fill a man's heart. One must imagine Sisyphus happy.” ― Albert Camus

The real treasure was the experiences we had along the way. The randomness and chaos of life is what makes it all the more interesting. Embrace the chaos and enjoy every moment of it. Nothing really matters. So why not live the way you want to. Have no regrets in your heart. Live life to its fullest. Now read it all again from the perspective of a serial killer.

Life is such a b1tch, it's fycking beyond me. I get what Camus said, but if life consists mainly of suffering, and then we all gonna end up as a meal for maggots, then yeah... Asking what's the fycking point would be ironic. It's so damn fycked up. I get to play video games all day long, but when I stop playing them, I feel like shit. I can get drunk, party hard, but after it ends, I'm gonna feel worse than initally. I get it's all about the mindset, that Democrit of Abdery didn't have shit, and he still was happy, but that's kinda a leap of faith as well. I've also heard about those "abusrd heroes" Caus wrote about, about conqueror, and shit, but idk, it's a hard pill to swallow. If I'm gonna end up as a feast for maggots, then better sooner than later, even though I'm gonna say otherwise, when I actually face death. I'm gonna notice the value of life, and I'm gonna think of all the things I didn't do but I wish I did. But now I don't feel like doing any of these (or rather to fight to get them), and that adds to this whole absurdity of existence. It's such a fyking cruel yoke. I hope the ww3 comes, then I maybe gonna get to kill some people, and feel this thrill I have never felt, or maybe I'm gonna die right off the bat. But maybe then I would live up to what Camus is saying. Live for this short thill, and be ready to die at any moment. Ehh, I wish I could just forget all of this, work hard, pursue ambitious goals restlessly, and you know, not think about bs.

Because there are fates so much worse than just pushing a bounder for eternity. Prometheus has his stomach gouged out and liver eaten perpetually by an eagle. Lamia - after Zeus had s*x with a queen named Lamia, Hera turned said queen into a monster with a hunger for children, including her own. Ixion - eternally bound to a burning wheel, constantly repeating a phraze I can't remember, something to do with repaying debt. Medusa - turned into a monster by Athena after being raped in Athenas temple. Name.I don't remember - put on a log over a lake, juicy apples dangle near him. He can never reach apples to quench hunger, or drink the water, forever tormented by hunger and thirst.

Its an allegory he(Camus) used for post ww1/mid ww2 France/French Algeria as he was heavily contemplating suicide. Absurdity of life was a popular topic during and after ww1 and depression. Instead of killing himself Camus decided to turn to stoicism and accept reality as it is. One must imagine sisyphus happy because perceived meaningless in camus opinion shouldny be associated with misery. Allegory of sisyphus was chosen most likely because living in that time period was often pictured in simillar colors

Opium induced car accidents are more of an eventuality as opposed to a random thing that just happens........ Stop trying to sound smart when you don't know anything about the guy. He was a narcissist, sexist, and a gay homophobe who abused virtually every person he knew personally His death in a car accident, when he would regularly drive while high on hard drugs and mind altering substances... predictable and eventually going to happen. He played Russian Roulette with life every day.....like most French philosophers, nihilistic to the end.
@Veldazandtea
@Veldazandtea Год назад
More like lack of observation which lead to not adapting to be prepared for the crash. I stick to buses. Why risk a car crash when a big buss is more sturdy and you don't have to drive yourself? It just seems random. Truth is it's your own ignorance. Adaptation concept. Unfortunately, can't really adapt when dead. I KNOW death though. Better then Albert did. So I've been more prepared in many things. It's awesome. People are really missing out on how wonderful it is. Imagine having meaning and purpose forever. That's the bolder. And we all know car crashes are common. That's not random. That's choosing to risk death when you're behind the wheel. People know the risks. They just pretend they "have too" when they don't question and challenge why.

@@VeldazandteaBus crashes can happen to you know? As a matter of a fact, if I am to crash in a accident, to choose the bus is to chose safety in the design of the bus but you lack independence in the outcome. You aren't at the driver's seat, you can't prevent or minimize the damage. Much of life is random, you can't prepare for everything. That doesn't mean you shouldn't try to prevent things happening to you nor does it mean you should always risk it. That's up to your own judgement. Edit : Come to think of it, I am sure there is something to be said about the danger of big and heavy structures like the bus: less control, 'the bigger they are..." and such. I think ultimately Albert mainly spoke about a mindset he choose to have when in a situation that seems unfair . I am sorry but your whole comment sounds...snarky? Maybe that's not the right word but it sounds a lot like idk you know better and everyone else ...doesn't? Like I am sorry but everyone else is doing what you are doing, even Albert did. I think you might be confused or maybe I just have a different understanding of what he meant.

Zeus expected him to fail and eventually give up the impossible task, Sisyphus is happy because he never gave Zeus the satisfaction of watching him give up. He defeated Zeus using the only thing humans have that the Gods don't, an unbreakable spirit even when faced with terrible circumstances.

Bro. Zeus couldn’t have possibly thought that Sisyphus would have given up, because the whole point of his ETERNAL TORTURE, was that he was FORCED to roll the boulder up the hill, and if he stopped he would be WHIPPED by the Furies. I’m not saying he couldn’t have found pleasure in the eternal boulder rolling, he just never could have found pleasure in the defiance of expectation, as it would have been impossible for him to do so.

I hate it that people use the “unbreakable human spirit” viewpoint when this story pops up, because it’s that same unbreakable human spirit that’s got Sisyphus trapped in his task forever. That “unbreakable human spirit” is why Zeus ultimately won, he turned it against Sisyphus and yet people act like it’s a thing to brag about

I’m pretty sure the reason for Sisyphus never stopping is because he does not want the gods to win. He wants to continue, as the moment he gives up pushing the boulder up the hill, is the moment he loses to the gods. Sisyphus (I think) is supposed to be the story of the indomitable human spirit and the will to continue.

Forgive me for this *Nerd Moment* but Sisyphus deserved it, 100%. In terms of being an all around awful person, he gave Zeus a run for his money. He was a king and a tyrant, a bloodthirsty one at that. If not for the Gods, he *was* the status quo. This isn't about fighting it, but the pitfalls of corrupted power and a bloated ego. He got what was coming to him. Honestly he was punished for the wrong thing, you'd think Hades would've got to him sooner for the whole "murdering guests" bit (company was *sacred* in Ancient Greece, ever heard of Hestia?). But Sisyphus being punished forever after living a full life is a delicious irony, even if a lot of people no doubt suffered along the way. By most tellings he was also a dick to his wife. What a boomer. The Myth of Sisyphus is not his story. Camus uses his punishment to explore a philosophical idea, without the muddy details that make that message less poignant. Interesting? Yes! Not inspirational.

Sisyphus is happy because he has the task of having the same thing to do over and again because essentially there isn’t anything to do in the afterlife, especially for someone who’s outsmarting the gods left, and right, it must be a supreme privilege for him to make the godz think that he’s upset at this, to save him from some harsher punishment which he so vehemently deserves

I never understood how this myth carries over to our lives. I mean Sisyphus has no choice but to live forever with the curse of pushing a boulder up a mountain. We, on the other hand, do have a choice. Each and every single one us could just end it right now. Suicide is the exit door to absurdity. We are under no obligation to find happiness in meaninglessness.
@IsaacClodfelter
@IsaacClodfelter 2 месяца назад
While it may not have been the original intention I have always interpreted, "One must imagine Sisyphus happy", as Sisyphus could only be happy in his punishment in our imagination. We imagine the joy Sisyphus could feel in getting the boulder an inch higher than the last time when from the from Sisyphus' point of view that accomplishment is punishment all the same as falling down the mountain to start again. In a system were the improvement of one's self can serve not purpose other than to further the struggler's suffering the joy in improvement is turned to a greater punishment that the original sentencing.

Sisyphus's struggle reminds me of the same struggle of samsara the cyclical nature of existence. His existence was changed by the gods and yet he still derives meaning from it i think thats the thing that makes me incredibly intrigued with sisyphus the meaning and struggle that allows him to experience those moments of bliss and happiness at their fullest no matter how small they may be.

So here's another thing, in ULTRAKILL, Sysiphus Prime says, "Ahh... So concludes the life and times of King Sisyphus. A fitting end to an existence defined by futile struggle, doomed from the very start... And I don't regret a SECOND of it!" I understand some of where he's coming from now.
