@@Techtablets Just noticed your video doesn't work in Chrome browser for Android. It says your browser doesn't recognize any of the video formats. But the RU-vid app works fine.
Well done as usual! I can see a market for these. Maybe someone who takes a train to work and would like to do a few documents before arriving. Short tern use where you might not want to drag along a full size 13-15 inch laptop.
These things are so cool. Super handy for people doing field networking stuff, small enough to carry around in a toolkit. I think those folks want better battery life than this offers, but sometimes XTU can make a huge difference with regards to that.
I really like that kind of product, because has real PC power when you compare with tablets, and NOT need a lot of accessories (dongle, keyboard, etc.).
its kind of a painin the ass when a 3rd of the screen is taken up by a virtual keyboard. they sell foldable bluetooth keyboards to address this problem but its basically just imitating what this umpc does out of the box.
Hi Chris, great video, cool product! Does the thermals can be improved? With something like a thermal pad for better heat conduction, or a ventilated base for using with high loads?
Thank you so much for this review.. I bought a Pink One Mix 2s.. and I think i got an idea what to look forward to.. It didnt change my mind.. I still want it just that i learned a useful information what I need to expect especially turning the screen 360 and the keyboard is still working.. that might be a bad cons for me ahehe.. Thanks!!!
GPD is still reluctant to make backlight keyboard, stating that it will make the device too thick but Topjoy Falcon make one with the exact same level of thickness.
These form factor devices are not meant for doing serious work, for better battery life, it would be a great use of the ARM always connected. I'd pick up one right away if they went with Qualcomm's Snapdragon 850, which would possibly make room for an even larger battery. So it would be a truly portable device, with great battery time, good use of Windows S programs, always-on connectivity and when paired with a monitor, keyboard and mouse can serve as some workstation if you need to type out more without getting carpal tunnel.
Are you sure the battery only lasts for 3.5 hours? try booting to arch linux, or just a terminal based operating system. How long does it last now? Windows run a bunch of processes in the background. Also.. I hope it doesn't use battery in sleep mode?
@@protocetid yah. i still have 2 vaio laptops from the Sony era and their designs were far less generic and boring than the aluminum unibody designs now. have you also checked out the recent VAIO laptops post-Sony as well? their flagship models are manufactured in Japan and are far better designed than many laptops today in my opinion. Panasonic and Fujitsu iirc still manufacture in Japan as well.
also the aliminium bodies now feel terrible to hold and so cold or so hot depending on the situation. plastic otoh feels more moderate since it doesnt conduct heat. much bearable when wearing shorts. really tired of boring aluminum bodies- looks so cheap and tacky now
@@jub8891 Besides Apple popularizing the styling you mention, consumers have been demanding a lot of minimalism sadly. While a an exterior with simple curves or angles (laptop or desktop) in black/silver can look sleek it has been done so much it's boring now. Makes everything look like an appliance. The first iMac or iBook look tacky, but you have to admit there's a certain inspiration and liveliness to their designs that is pretty much gone from the computer market now and it sucks.
Just to make a correction that probably many others already made: None of GPD's current UMPCs offer a backlit keyboard. The only current x86 UMPC that offers a backlit keyboard is One Netbook's first One Mix device, so it's strange that this one doesn't. GPD WILL however include a backlit keyboard for their upcoming MicroPC UMPC, but no word on if it'll become a staple for their other future UMPCs as well.
@@nneeerrrd I did try it helps but the issue is often it will still peak over 90 and throttles as the fan is a bit slow to ramp up the speed to avoid the spike in temps.
This is used for a niche market. For me some of my sensor, like, lidar, openmv camera, oscilloscope, etc.. it great to having something small and portable that could run windows. I could program on the go. I have a 12 inch iPad, however it can't run windows programs. So with this small PC, I could connect it directly to my iPad.
Excuse me, would be good for writing my thesis on that yoga book?! The small keyboard isn't an issue for me really... But would it handle the heavy use that comes with writing a thesis or not?! Thanks in advance.
I REALLLY wish on most laptops especially in this form factor (GPD POCKET/POCKET 2) that the battery was placed behind the screen for 3-4x capacity and then room for a second PCIe device, That or the motherboard was placed behind the screen and then battery below the keyboard, this would allow for better passive cooling when not in tablet mode
You'll be a big hit if concentrating on these tiny Windows machines. Because no one else is plus it's an emerging future market for very good reasons. Also if you can find mobile charger banks that charge devices within this genre.
Great review as usual Chris! Just one thing, you reviewed both the GPD win and the GPD pocket but this is similar to the pocket, not to the win. Same in your website. I own a pocket 1 and to be honest battery life and keyboard are more of an issue than CPU power... Also lack of 4G is an issue for me. People believe they can have a full computer experience in their pocket but are soon disappointed after buying since you can't write anywhere as fast as a full keybord or even a decent ipad mini keyboard... (like the brydge one). And this thing is going to die in your pocket before you have done much with it... And windows is a pain to use at 7in... Even just 8in would be less of a headache. I believe the new Snadpdragon chips, which are i5 like, would be ideal for battery life and power and would include 4G. Also, the new pocket 2 (with m3 7th gen) has a more usable keyboard than this. And some more screen by reducing the side bezels would help too....
I would used this so I could download data from my oscilloscope, in the field without having to bring a 14 inch laptop. Also used to run sensors that require a window 10 PC too operate.
i really hope one day advances in technology will allow us to have laptops like these that fit into our pockets, but with much less compromises. But more than that i hope that i´ll actually be able to buy one of these, since they aren´t available in europe at least not at a reasenable prize
So do I, part of the reason I got this was to test the new Core M3. Hope to see it in new Teclast 2-in-1's, A new Cube Thinker i35 and more tech this year but with faster RAM it does support.
Techtablet...please review huawei y max or huawei enjoy max or huawei honor 8x max...choose 1 in this list...people still dont know how good this phone..only you can do this review..because you are profesional review in the world
Genuinely don't care about webcams - they're never as good as the front facing cellphone ones anyway. Also I genuinely can't remember the last time I used my webcam, it's just not a thing I need. Battery life is non-negotiable though. Anything less than 8-10 hours is automatically out of the running for me. Shame, I'd be really interested in a tiny laptop alternative like this. Looks like it could be quite convenient when I just need to take notes or something, I'm looking to downsize my daily carry for my average uni days...
@@protocetid It's identical in performance to the Win 2. At least for gaming. They have the same GPU, the HD 615, and the CPU is just slightly better than the Win 2, arfound 10% faster at most according to online benchmarks. Still won't make any difference in gaming performance, since the HD 615 is what's holding their gaming performance back. The biggest problem with the Mix 2s compared to the Win 2 is that it thermal throttles while the Win 2 doesn't. So if you're gaming for more than a few minutes at a time, then the Mix 2s will slow down a bit, while the Win 2 will keep on working just as well as before because it has a better cooler that can handle the load. If you want a portable PC for non gaming purposes the One Netbook Mix 2s or GPD Pocket 2 are perfect for that, but for gaming the Win 2 is better for the price. It also has a bigger 9800mah battery plus a built in controller.
Have you ever try to charge this item by using powerbank? I am trying to using power bank (several types of powerbanks) with the type C cable but it does not work.
Is this similar to the one mix yoga 2s ?Could you make a comparison video of the 2s pc with the topjoy falcon and a Samsung phone with dex mode please ?
I wish .. Iwish really that xiaomi gonna adopt this cpu in the next tablet with windows 10 mi pad 5 with a faster ram.... the gpu is more powerfull than the u 8th gen or even the hq and H 8th gen integrated gpu making it a more playable machine than the surface pro 6 🤣😅
Hmm that track pad look similar with Blackberry phone the one after trackball not use again and that CPU look to powerful consider how small this Laptop, Good Job whoever make this.
I am trying to decide between this and surface go. For reading ebook, and work, and note taking, light work and portability. Can anyone shead a light? I feel Surface Go has better quality, bigger screen, the screen is only 212ppi Vs OneMix 2s has 323 ppi similar to ipad mini 4. OneMix2s being smaller and easier to carry. Surface Go could also serve this porpose. Not sure which would be a better buy for my purpose... there's also dell venue 8 pro 5855
does surface come with full windows 10 too? i was looking at the cheap/bottom end one which is still almost $500 and windows 10 "S" (means you can only download apps from microsoft store, not anywhere on the web). I see another message you say you bought this one featured in the vide, is this true, and how is it?
Never have the Core M3's in my experience ever had good battery. Maybe if you sat it there idle it could do 8 hours or looping video on the lowest brightness setting. Sad really, I also wanted some really good battery life from this one and 4k60hz.
@@Techtablets intel's foveros chips should help, it combines the atom cores and the core cores (mouthful!) to get the best of both words. But somehow intel will probably mess it up/have shortages.
@@MichaelFlatman Nice idea. Like in ARM architecture. 2 cores standard m3 and 2 cores low power energy atom with ability to switching beetwen them like intel hd and nvidia graphics.
I don't know, in this day and age, UMPC that uses Intel Core M or worse Atom simply doesn't make sense. Heck, it seems to me that W32 emulated on Windows-on-snapdragon offers similar performance but at much better battery life.
@@sciencefiles3649 I do understand that. What I don't understand is user case for such small device. It's simply uncomfortable even for productivity tasks bcoz of the screen and keyboard size. Same with other tasks. So, why would u buy this device for 600 USD, what would u do with it?
@@MichaelFlatman Clocks above base clock is thermal throttling. Intel CPUs are slow as [censored] if can't reach some turbo speeds. Below base clock are unusable. Like my Thinkpad E480 :(
@@legyes yeah it is a bit of a bummer tbh, but to achieve full turbo clocks requires a lot of power, eg.the I5 8250U rated at 15w TDP can use up to 35-40w when all 4 cores are on turbo, before the power limit kicks in.
@@MichaelFlatman Yes, but after that the thermal limit kicks in and the CPU downclocks at 800MHz or below. With disabled turbo the I/O speed is a joke.
