This gorgeous place in the mountains of rural Japan is a natural building paradise. Natural building techniques are used everywhere, including in the renovation of the abandoned old house (Kominka), the building of a new timber frame house, stonewalls, and a tree house.
One of the founders of Kamimomi Permaculture Center, Kyle Holzhueter, takes us on a tour of the various natural buildings and techniques used on site to breathe new life into this abandoned Japanese Homestead in the mountains of Okayama.
If you're interested in building with natural materials such as local timber, earth, bamboo and straw, this video is for you!
Kyle touches on many different aspects of natural buildings, including ceiling finishes, earth plasters, sgraffito, shikkui, straw bales, light straw clay, earthbags, insulation techniques such as rice husk lime and living roofs!

Hello from Okinawa ! Thank you and your friends for bringing the old homestead back to life! My husband’s family farm in Yamagata was given to a neighbor who immediately tore down the farm house that was about 150 years old and had magnificent wood beams. SAD. Alas, many farms are abandoned as the children went on to live in the cities for work. Your restoration gives me hope for Japan’s rural areas.

I used to watch vids with Michael G. Smith about natural building. It's nice to see him mentioned here.

Lovely way to research and apply different building and insulating techniques. I understand that each approach has ups and downs, based on what kind of location you have to work with. But I'm very interested to know how it turns out when it's finished, and how the different methods hold up to weather, and seasonal changes.

The farmers and renovations are so inspiring and offer creative techniques. I am a little cautious of how easy these videos make the work seem. This is hard labor and takes great skill and/or discernment. Is it possible to offer information on how to learn and practice these methods? Thank you for sharing such valuable life growing information!

Hi Kyle, I’m wondering if you went to a Waldorf school. (?) My nephews are 8 and my sister is thinking about sending them to one. I like the way you think.

Very informative. Did you need to get a building permit in order to do this? What legal regulations did you have to follow?

Good question, don't think Kyle mentioned this during my visit. Will ask him next time I see him and relay his answer to you :)
