9:44 2-3Mbps isn't actually that bad for train Wi-Fi. Not only will that comfortably allow Spotify/Tunein or other audio apps to work, it also allows RU-vid and other video services to work at reduced resolutions (e.g. 480p or lower). You don't often get that on UK trains!

I think that if there were earlier pendolino departures I would have chosen one of those so as to not miss the scenery 🗻🗻🗻 and I also would have told my stomach to wait to have a meal in the dining car. 😋 The dining car with its starched white tablecloths looked very inviting 👍🏻

That was a nice looking train interior. i was impressed by the tablecloths on the dining car tables - haven't seen that in a while (surprised to see Thai green curry on their menu as well). For spectacular Swiss scenery, I'd like to see you take the Glacier Express or the Bernina Express on a summer day, I know they're a bit touristy, but the scenery and experience would be worth it.

My regular ride, Munich to my home in St. Gallen. I agree, a visit to Memmingen is well worth it. Terrific architecture (fortunately it was not devastated in WW2 like Munich). Great cafes and restaurants.

Love to see operators like SBB have a proper restaurant car in their intercity/EuroCity trains rather than just bar coaches like those on TGV trains, not to mention that all TGV Inoui services from/to Paris Gare du Nord don't even have some sort of catering service.....

Thank you for a great review. I too have travelled on this route, and the ETR503s are excellent. The tilting mechanism is very smooth, and certainly helps speed up the journey, despite the rather low maximum speeds that are allowed. The lateness of your train was not surprising, and it’s not helped by the single track sections either !

Great video. First time I did that trip was a few years ago when it was loco hauled and had a Swiss panorama car which I found to be far betterto admire the scenery than the RABe503's that they now use (be they quicker). In those days, the train reversed at Lindau HBf (now Lindau Insel) and had two Br218s hauling it between Munich and Lindau before handing over to a sole Re4/4 II. The first time I used a RABe503 was from Milano Centrale to Zurich HBf over the original Gotthard route.

As previously stated, it used to be loco hauled with a reverse at Lindau. Usually SBB fresh air compartment stock. Some of this is still around, although refitted as open seating and very scarsely deployed. Back in the 80s when I first did it, the carriage doors were locked around there for border checks! I see you came into ZH below ground in the newest bit. Congratulations on your escape. :) SBB interior fittings are standard across a lot of their stock. Try the domestic single deck IC sets you passed a few of. You'll see what I mean.

There are two unterground parts of the Zürich HB one only for regional trains and one for mostly InterCity trains.

The "new" underground part of Zurich HB (easily recognizable by the golden ceilings) serves both S-Bahn trains as well as Intercity trains.

Toilets all working: Well that's good. I not so fondly remember a trip on an Italian Frecciargento of similar type that had a severe shortage of working toilets, with long lines at the one or two that were actually open.

The only flaw these train have is actually the luggage storage. I use them quite often, and let me tell you that you won’t find any free space in the overhead rack, nor at the end of the carriage, when you’re in second class during a classic Friday evening. The space is really limited compared to the many others Swiss trains. Appart from that, I also love these trains !

thanks for the video Dylan! in switzerland we don‘t like these trains and thats also my opinion. ride quality is bad and there is too less space for lugage, bikes or skis. you should try other trains in switzerland which are definitely better! 😉

If only Alstom could of built the Pendolinos for the East Coast Main Line as they have manufactured the Class 390 Pendolinos that are used on the West Coast Main Line and are operated by Avanti West Coast (previously Virgin Trains).

Very interesting video. Last year these trains stopped for 30 minutes in St Margarethen because the electric train safety system in the RABe 503 Astoro units had to be switched between the Swiss and the German-Austrian versions. This can now be done while the train is moving, which has improved the overall speed. But at the moment the Swiss timetable shows only two through trains per day, although there are supposed to be six. Maybe there are engineering works somewhere. By the way, if you think Munich Hbf is grim today, you should have seen it in the 1980's!

They both have their advantages, and I'm glad about the variety: While the Pendolino is a tilting train, the Giruno is better for level boarding and accessibility. On the long and winding Munich-Zürich route, the tilting is a good asset to have.

I gotta disagree on the comfort level. Especially when seated against the direction of travel, over winding lines, in a full second class (all are quite usual to encounter within Switzerland), motion sickness is just around the corner. I once had to go for a wander and find a new seat to snap out of it and I'm not extremely susceptible to it. I haven't had the opportunity to ride on one of the new stadler SMILE (/Giruno) trainsets that took over part of the SBB eurocity network but apparently they do have a bit better ride quality and less crampedness in second class, as opposed to these Alstom sets.

I agree that seat comfort in these trains (I like to call them FIAT Punto Binario Due) is lacking, and I would like to add the perspective of a person without tilting nausea, but with lower back pain. The bin pushes you out of the only seating position for which the seats allow, which are themselves shaped far too much. I by far prefer more neutral seats which allow for slightly different ways to sit during a long journey (cf. SBB ICN or SBB EW IV, 2nd class only, even if the heater again diminshes the comfort on window seats). The comparison with Girunos is correct, but unfair, since Girunos won‘t tilt and can thus be built with much wider, rectangular cabin profiles while conforming to the available lightroom en route (and, well, remaining generally upright). This is the general trouble with pendolinos, as mentioned in the video.

You can but usually only if you're under 18, over 60 or disabled.

Not necessarily, at least to a Brit. It's pretty common for shops to be open whilst places are still under construction just with signs pointing you to a second entrance

Perspective. Let me share how much I paid an Uber car ( like a taxicab ) to go 3.1 miles one way to work when my car refused to start…$27.00 USD - just a hair shy of your 3 countries wide train ride!

Great trip report, thanks! These Munich-Zurich ECEs are nearly always delayed, and, believe it or not, the blame is not on DB, but the SBB network running over capacity. If the trains arrives with more then two minutes delay in St. Margrethen, and they always do because of engeenring works in Austria (until June), they have to follow the S-Bahn until Zurich, since there is no chance to overtake it... What did the SBB guys thought, when they designed a timetable for a train service, running through three different countries, with long streches of single track to depend on TWO minutes?

Lake Constance is correct in English. "Lake Constance" ist die korrekte Bezeichnung des Bodensee im Englischen. Bildung hilft und tut meist nicht weh. 😉

S-Bahn actually does not mean "suburban train". in fact, it stands for "Stadtbahn" which mean "urban train".

Die Bezeichnung „S-Bahn“ leitet sich von Stadtbahn, Schnellbahn, Stadtschnellbahn oder Stadt- und Vorortbahn ab. "Suburban train" passt, weil die Vororte mit dem urbanen Zentrum verknüpft werden. Die U-Bahn ist der eigentliche "urban train", weshalb in den meisten Ländern der Welt diese Züge "metro" heißen, denn Metropole = Großstadt = urban.

A „Stadtbahn“ is not close to the S-Bahn. Per definition a „Stadtbahn“ is a tram with higher capacity which is partially on its on tracks away from the street. The S-Bahn (Stadtschnellbahn) is a suburban train style per definition as it serves the city, as well as the suburbs and neighbour towns. So Dylan is absolutely right here.

It's disappointing that you don't make use of the dining car. That's the highlight of the trip. Better not eat before hand. And maybe you should be more discrete about filming the other passengers.
