The point about Natalie Portman’s character is everyone in her life is so caught up in everything else, they forget about her. Even as the audience, we get so caught up in everything else, we forget about her.

The gunshot sounds echoing throughout the city is one thing, but Val Kilmer's reload there was so quick that it became a standard for how fast trained professionals should reload

1995 was a phenomenal year for the silver screen's crime genre: Heat, Se7en, The Usual Suspects, Casino, La Haine, etc... The first two were direct influences for The Dark Knight (2008) & The Batman (2022) respectively.

Such a beautiful ending with them holding hands. Both so similar to each other just on opposite sides of the line.

Funfact. The ass scene with Pacino and Azaria was improvized screaming by Pacino. The scared Azaria was real. He almost pissed himself according to him

Al Pacino's very best acting in this movie is probably the way his eyes change when he opens the bathroom door, truly amazing.

Aa such big Nolan and Dark Knight fans, I'm surprised nobody mentioned the connection. The large city storytelling was directly what Nolan tried to emulate with The Dark Knight, starting with the bank heist, William Fichtner, down to the Joker and Batman interrogation scene, the entire film was an homage to Heat. Even the very loud gunshots, remade where Bruce fires the shots to recreate the Shattered bullet.

@Diamond Dave...the fact that the viewer pretty much forgets about Natalie Portman's character is by design. She is a teenage girl with mental health issues and ultimately she feels "unseen" by everyone in her life. Her character was written purposely for you to not get to know her.

Surprised no one seemed to recognise Jon Voight.

Val kilmer executes a perfect magazine change,so much so that when they showed it at army bases the troops cheered at that exact moment to show someone had put the time in, ex SAS soldier Andy mcnab trained the bad guys and the cops separately

The napkin at 14:20 around the glass is also no fingerprints are left

Mason Quinn is correct. The reload scene and that whole shootout scene are shown because of how tactically and seamlessly it was produced. From the reload to the cover and retreating fire. It's just a beautifully shot scene and the audio is absolutely insane.

I was an Infantry tactical specialist when I was in the army and that bank scene was legit!! What a movie this is :)

HEAT is actually a remake of a movie that Michael Mann made in the 80s, called L.A. Takedown, low budget and with unknown actors, if you see it is the same story but with less production, even includes the shooting in the streets but on a smaller scale.

Greatest action movie of all time. The bank heist scene is 10/10, the coffee scene with Pacino and DeNiro is 10/10. The ending is brilliant, pacing top notch, stacked cast, insane tension, Pacino and DeNiro are obviously great, but Kilmer crushes it too, as does every one else. I only saw this for the first time a couple of months ago and I'm ashamed it took me so long, this film is incredible. Really can't say enough good stuff about it. I am HYPED to see this reaction.

The guy in the wheelchair who set up the bank score played Dolarhyde in "Manhunter" (1986) and the Ripper in "Last Action Hero" (1993). That's 2 Hannibal Lector killers in 1 movie.

One of the greatest movies ever made, so many iconic, incredible scenes but I could write an essay about the ending itself. Vincent and Neil finally embrace showing just how similar they are, Vincent looking into the distance wondering what’s next for him, Neil avoiding human contact his whole life only to ask for his hand to be held while he dies by his greatest adversary. Perfect ending, only thing that could’ve made it better was if there was a sunrise.

Hey guys, great choice. So glad I found this channel 💙✌️😊 Edit: one thing about the daughter..it could be a bit of a meta thing too. The filmmakers almost force the audience to forget about her, which makes it so impactful when we get the tub scene. She felt forgotten/abandoned & we the audience nearly forgot her too.

BTW, both of them are former Marines. Obviously, @30:31, Det Hannah, when he's being talked about by Jon Voight: "night school, marine corps" And Neil McCauley @13:59, after he sleeps with Eady and gets out of bed, you can see the eagle, globe, and anchor tattoo on his arm. So this story is essentially two marines ("there's a flip side to that coin") and their crews fighting each other.

So stoked for you guys seeing this Michael Mann classic for the first time. There's life before you see HEAT, and then after. You're forever changed now. For the soo much better.

In the director's commentary, Michael Mann noted that Al Pacino improvised the line "Because she's got a GREAT ASS!" Hank Azaria confirmed it, saying that Al Pacino's unexpected outburst "scared the hell out of me", "he just actually terrified me" and that his look of shock was "not acting at all".

I love this movie. But I can't get over the fact that no reactors point that Waingro is a serial killer. And doe the record.... You had Iceman, The Devil, President Palmer, captain Stottemyer, Machete, Geronimo, Sgt. Horvath, Judge Amy, Padre. Bubba, The always funny Hank Azaria and Bud Cort. What a cast. LOL. And if you can't tell, I've seen a lot of movies and shows. LOL

Seen this upon release in my 20s. Some family flew in for the holidays, and my cousin and her husband and I were the only ones in the gathering below 60, so we decided to get some air after dinner and went to see a flick… Mann has blindsided me twice with masterpieces: Last of the Mohicans and Heat… Miami Vice the movie is highly underrated!

For me, this movie is a masterpiece -- a movie "opera" or novel, with this huge tapestry, all started with that one heist in the beginning, and Waingro screwing it up. Everything comes from that moment. For me it's all the little parallels and chances that make this movie so special. Neil and Vincent being reflections of each other, just like their crews are reflections of each other. Cheritto being shown having little girls of his own -- then coldly using a little girl as a shield in the bank heist (!). Chris gambling away his money and openly abusing Charlene (the woman the sun "rises and sets" with, ugh). Eady and Neil connecting in their loneliness (I love how honest their first conversations are -- and Neil leaving the water glass). Etc. And this cast!! Just unbelievable -- so many Oscar nominees/winners (DeNiro, Pacino, Voight, Portman, plus honorary Oscar winner Studi), plus a fantastic supporting cast list of so many badasses -- Tom Sizemore (RIP), Diane Venora, Ted Levine, William Fichtner, Amy Brenneman, a dozen others... (Little bit of trivia: Kevin Gage, who played Waingro, ended up in prison in the early 2000s for two years -- everyone called him "Waingro!") Dave, really disappointed in your rating and 'nitpicks.' You seemed to miss a lot here. You wanted more scenes to understand Natalie Portman's character, then criticize the movie for being too long. We got everything we needed with Portman -- a key scene none of you mentioned was Vincent picking her up and giving her a ride home -- she knew she could depend on him. Meanwhile, Oak, the Natalie Portman hospital moment isn't about a heavy-handed faux-reconciliation between Vincent and Justine. It's about showing that they are two people who love and get each other, but who will never be able to make it work. Justine also eloquently voices Vincent's difference from Natalie's Dad (and also from Neil) -- Natalie picked Vincent because she knew he loved her and was a better father than her worthless biodad. The opening scene with Vincent and Justine is important -- it's the last time they will ever be together. Then he goes on to his shower and the day he discovers Neil's crew, she pops a pill against depression, then goes to help her fragile daughter. Speaking of which, Answer, why add a scene with Natalie Portman feeling bad about her Dad not showing up (and her feeling not good enough for him to visit) when that is *exactly* what her freaking about the barrettes scene was for? It tells us everything we need to know, right there (as does Justine telling Vincent later that the dad never showed up). I honestly wouldn't change a thing about this movie -- I think it's incredibly rich and nuanced exactly as it is.

There was a novel or screenplay, I forget which, that picks up some years later with Chris working security for a drug cartel or some such. I don't know how good it is. HEAT was written originally as a TV series, but never got picked up; it got condensed as much as possible into a movie script. It was also very loosely based on a true story, about a similar crew in Chicago in the 60s or 70s. Vincent Hanna (Pacino) was supposedly a coke addict, which explains his manic energy.

Okay I'll bite. As codependent from childhood, leaving a glass of water (little bit of ice, condensation moistens the paper towel holding it)... Cool damp paper towel plus cool water - perfection. 💚💙💜

I also hadn’t seen this for the longest time and felt so bad that it took me a while. It’s such a badass movie.

Michael Mann's whole filmography is pretty epic. I highly recomend checking Manhunter, Collateral, Last of Mohicans and Thief. And also despite their bad reputation, I think 2006's Miami Vice and Blackhat are really good too.

Guys, I really enjoyed watching your reactions to this great film. My wife and I saw this in the theater when it was first released, and we loved it! One thing about the sound design during the bank shootout: They did it that way to show how the sound of the gunfire would be enhanced due to the tall buildings in that location. They were trying to simulate echoes and reverb with the use of different types of firearms in a downtown location with skyscrapers all around. In theaters, at that time, I thought the effects were quite good. ❤😂

You guys are killing me with the 'Ambulance Driver' comments 😅 I'm an EMT, and in the world of EMS, 'Ambulance Driver' is used as a tongue-in-cheek insult for EMTs because their scope of practice is less than a Paramedic so 'all they do is drive' (Not really, but that's the joke). Contrary to some belief, EMTs/Paramedics drive the ambulances. Not many places have a designated driver for the ambulance. Felt like I was at work for a minute.😂 Great reaction!

It was cut from the final release, but Pacino's character was a major coke addict which explains his behavior. Its kind of a hilarious performance without those cut scenes

Man we need a Robert DeNiro, Al Pacino, criminal mobster movies in general marathon next! My recommendations: Goodfellas (ABOVE ALL ELSE), The Godfather 1&2, A Bronx Tale, Casino, Oceans 11&12, Taxi driver, American Gangster, Scarface, One upon a time in America.

Saw it in the movies...Christmas 1995. Everyone was stunned. Such an excellent movie.

The gun sounds during the shootout are real. Michael Mann said at first they used regular foley sound effects but those just didn't have the same impact as it was during the shoot on location, the echoes and sounds reverberating off the buildings, so they ditched the artificial gun sounds and just used the live sounds that were recorded on location during the filming. And like in all of Mann's movies, the weapons handling and usage is top notch. He subjects his actors to extensive and rigorous tactical firearms training with Mick Gould and Andy McNab, former Special Forces members of the British SAS. You can see stuff like that in "Collateral" and "Miami Vice (2006)" too.

My favorite scene is the early diner scene, Sizemore staring down the would be tough guy at the other table, and the reveal of the tarp lined car trunk.

The house where Trejo is put out of his misery was shot at a house that was for sale at the time. The people who owned that house had seen the movie in theaters, and noticed that scene was in their now bedroom. They go home, pull the carpet up and there was a red stain on the floor from the makeup effects. I giggle whenever I heard Mann tell that story.

Back in the 1960's, when the real Vincent and Neil met accidentally in line at a luncheonette, they recognized each other and had coffee. The Vincent character was a former Chicago cop who was Michael Mann's consultant during the Miami Vice series run told him this story

Great idea for intro theme! Loved Quinn's glee of excitement watching & all your reactions to film, his right that sound design is awesome, that shootout scene is purely epic & great line by De Niro about walk away from anything in 30 seconds if you feel the heat & the delivery of Pacino's lines & your reactions to them were just pure gold! I think its De niro's & Pacinos best work & it didn't make the yt cut but the tv scene was a great line too "you can sleep with my wife, but you are not watching my tv!!" 😆 De Niro leaves a napkin round the glass so not to leave fingerprints, that cafe scene dialogue was shot perfectly, I just can't praise this movie enough! 1 of my favourites of all time that I can over & over, also some trivia, Payday2 videogame took alot of inspiration from this film, their heist missions "Big Bank" & "Heat Street" pay homage to the Bank heist & the street shootout scenes & you unlock a special hockey masks that's exact replica that De Niros crew wear in film. Don't feel bad about not having seen this before now! It's a movie that benefits from being watched with more life experience, and more experience with what good films look like. You get appreciate the experience more if you go in to this one with some years under your belt vs watching it as a kid or teen(which would probably still be really cool just not the whole ride it could be).

I took that route from 5th to the 110 in Downtown every workday on my way home at the time when this film came out It was surreal seeing the shootout on-screen.

Mid to late 90’s was peak practical effects in movies. All real explosions and car wrecks.

Great reaction guys, this is a phenomenal movie, one of my all-time favourites. If nobody has mentioned it already, this was also the first movie that Robert & Al had actually shared screen time. I first watched this movie in barracks while serving in the New Zealand Army. During the firefight outside the bank, when Val changes mags, about 5 or 6 of us simultaneously said "Good drills!!"

When you guys were talking about Al pacino's charisma and what it added to the movie, it reminded me of the original version of Heat, which is a made-for-TV film called L.A. Takedown. It is practically the same script, word for word, but it's a much lesser movie because it lacks the acting and presence of the cast we see here. It's a perfect example of how much acting ability and charisma bring to the table.

The first time i watched this movie, i couldn't watch the end. I was rooting for Deniro's character so bad even though he was the villain of the movie. I wished he had gone straight to the airport without diverting. It occurred to me that he broke his own rule. He probably thought that the most difficult thing he would have to walk away from in 30 seconds will be a loved one but it ended up being his need for revenge. At the end of the day, he couldn't let go of his anger and desire to kill waingro even when the heat was round the corner. That led to his death. This is my first time actually watching to the very end because i could watch with you guys...thanks

First time this movie came to my attention was when I was in the military, they showed the bank heist scene during our squad movement and tactics course.

I remember watching this in a pretty decent cinema. By the end of the robbery shootout, your heart was racing because of the way it was shot and the surround sound, it really felt like you were in the middle of the shootout, fantastic directing.

this movie is thought to have inspired the real life north hollywood shootout, which i recommend researching about on youtube or other sources.

The reason Natalie Portman didn’t have more scenes is her character is always forgotten and ignored. It is why she tries to commit suicide because she feels nobody cares for her. She chooses Vincent’s hotel room as it is likely she in some way wanted to live and it was more an action of “someone notice me please”.

Watched this for the first time over the weekend!

DeNiro and Pacino understandably get so much appreciation for this movie but every single actor brought their absolute A game even the love interests and side characters gave such incredible emotional performances. Kriss's wife in particular she had very little screen time but every second was beautiful you felt her frustration and anger with kriss but in the end she loved him too much to betray him.
