I love it. I was surprised to find out it was one of the deadliest sections of interstate in the US. I'm not sure if its due to speed, turns, combination, but i love it. I got a better video of this coming out eventually. We drove through here again on our way back home last summer. But lol There was road construction and I was behind a semi, so I dont know if the quality is as good as I wanted.
We love driving through Utah and Arizona. We try to go yearly around these parts. When we first planned to go to Utah I was looking up different roads/interstates and there was an article that stood out. This particular section of road and the fatality rate. I never experienced any trouble or saw any wrecks the few times now I've been here. Seen a lot of road work though.
I live next to the mouth of the Gorge and it's the best drive you can make. Driven it too many times to count and still don't get bored of the views. Especially in the spring when it's a little more green and more water
We love the area, we eventually want to move to St George/Hurricane Utah eventually, probably when I retire. When I was researching before we left on this trip, we read that this particular stretch of road had the most fatalities per mile than any other road in the US or Utah, I can't recall which now, but as long as you slow down, we didn't find it to be cumbersome. We were in awe of the canyon and Virgin river. Beautiful and amazing area.
I agree, I think we've been through that way 4 or 5 times now over the last 5 years and the only thing I ever see is road construction. I recall seeing an article online saying how this road was so bad. Maybe its the time of year?
@@TheMadNomadder yeah, it can snow which with the downgrades and curves can be sketchy especially with semi traffic. But I just enjoy the view. Which I could see it while someone else drove.
This was def a beautiful drive even the second time around. Wanna make it a third time?! Never bored lol...you talk to rocks, cows, llamas, donkeys, horses and god only knows what else!!
I even talk to myself!!! They say third times a charm! We make it back a third time, I want to stop at that observation point, there is also something else I recall that we could stop at...that leads to the Virgin River. It may be the observation point I'm thinking of.
111 degrees??? NO! Swimming rattle snakes? Double NO! I had to google that to see and yes, they do swim! You guys are ruining life for me. (just kidding) I can see why that highway is deadly. Too many rental RV's. (kidding again.. LOL)
The things we learn from youtube lol...Every place we go in the desert, I always add rattlesnake. Marfa...Marfa Rattlesnake...Zion NP...Zion NP Rattlesnake...we are so paranoid about them. That one video I uploaded last week shows my wife almost stepping on one. I had to slow down the original video to review it. I'm pretty sure thats what it was, especially since she was fairly certain she heard some rattles.
I grew up in Rattlesnake country, and I remember as a kid when it was really hot and dry in the desert the snakes would come towards the houses seeking water. My dad would chop their heads off with a hoe. My dad was 100 ft tall and was made of steel, but the look on his face when one of his kids said "hey daddy, another snake". I'm pretty sure that was a life lesson well taught.
In one of our adventures...we talked to a law enforcement officer in Artesia, NM...He said his daddy always taught them to cut the head off and buried it separate from the rest of the snake. Said it was bad luck to not do so and cause a drought. WeI was happy to converse with him. Learning as much as I could about the area, he even fitted me with a cowboy hat from the area lol.. Thats what I love about traveling in these little towns..talking to the locals and "kinda" fitting in.
I'm not a fan of rattlesnakes at all! I'm dreading the day when we meet one large enough to scare the bejeezus out of me. I always try to keep the "I'm cool no matter what" aspect. I think it will come this year in Texas. For whatever reason I think it will happen at Big Bend NP to Martha/Fort Davis area....somewhere around there we are going to be scared shitless.
