Truly one of the toughest pieces of animation I've ever seen... WHAT A MASTERFUL EMOTIONAL ROLLERCOASTER. Welcome to the reaction/first time watching/commentary of HAZBIN HOTEL 1x4 ("Masquerade"), and this time we experience a dark, hard to watch and emotionally powerful character study with Angel Dust, who's one of the biggest surprises of this show by far. With top-notch songs like Poison and Loser, Baby, this episode will forever live rent-free in my head and it just elevates this show to a whole another level. The writing gets better and better, and the topics addressed in this episode... it's a necessary conversation. Incredible visuals as well. I care SO MUCH for these characters. Easily a masterpiece. This episode is something else, so uncomfortable yet so necessary, so well executed. A masterpiece in my mind. Fun, no, INTERESTING fact. You won't find it in show, so SPOILERS, but it was explained by the writers that Angel Dust was born in a Mafia Family back when he was alive. He hated it however, and found his outlet in prostitution. Where he can be free. It's why he seems so proud of his profession. Because he is. Once in Hell, however, he most likely thought prostitution would be the same, and offered himself to Valentino to survive Hell. That's why he said he had nobody to blame but himself. Unlike in the Human World where Pimps would need to worry about their 'merchandise' wellbeing, it wasn't necesary in Hell where everyone is immortal. He didn't hate being a porn star, he hated how his supposed place for release become his place of suffering because of Valentino.

One thing I love about this episode that I haven't seen many people talking about is that they made it clear that Husk was genuinely being too hard on Angel. It just makes him seem more human and less like that perfect Iroh type source of endless wisdom. Once he heard Angels outburst he realised what he was doing wrong, he didn't need tough love or sympathy, what he needed was validation, and that's exactly what he gives him in the form of the best song in the series. And the trope of broken people finding solace in each other will never get old, Huskerdust4life

It’s my second favorite. I just love Poison so much despite how tragic it is. Seriously it’s so sad, but it’s so damn catchy at the same time.

Angel’s hyper sexualization is very understandable now. Him crossing boundaries with Husk like he did is still inexcusable but it’s understandable. Angel is just trying to reclaim his bodily autonomy in the only way he knows how, even if that way is by ignoring others wishes and boundaries in order to get a reaction from them. Husk: Don’t… even start. Angel: Oh come on. *wraps one of Husk’s wings around himself* I bet I could make those wings flap. 😳😾 Angel and Husk definitely both made mistakes in this episode but they both regretted their actions later.

One thing that very few reactors react to is just how strong Husk really is. He one-hands a loan-shark halfway across the bar, and then a few minutes (and one hell of a song) later, he takes down three more in as many seconds. Dude may not be an Overlord anymore, but having seen him fight, I can imagine how powerful he must have been at some point.

Valentino is a pimp, and they show that well in this episode The abuse, two face personality, manipulation, exploitation, etc. It's textbook pimp behaviour. Val's VA even said doing this epiosde made him feel unwell having to play such a vile person But he does such a great job making a monster come off as a monster

This was rough. But I do appreciate how there's nothing glamorous depicted in Angel's world. Charlie means well, but she doesn't fully understand how to read the room. She's still very much naive about the world outside of her privileged vantage point. It makes for a realistic character flaw.

The way Angel's world is portrayed has shocked me to the core here, major props to Vivienne and the rest of the creative team behind this ep. Yes, I really love how they're giving Charlie more and more depth with each ep, such a great protagonist!

@darquidarqui agreed it's rare to see an optimistic character to recognize and accept what she did wrong and tries not to make the same mistake by not forcing angel dust back and give him time to recollect. this episode develops angel dust and husk but also charlie's growing arc

There’s some subtle juxtaposition between when Angel gets high (off of drugs) while it swifts to Angel happily jumping into Val’s arms, basically an artificial “high” and an authentic sort of high Angel still has with Val (so to speak) during the Poison musical number It’s safe to assume that Angel MIGHT (still) have feelings for Val, considering he signed his real name with a heart. (Plus Fat Nuggets being gifted to Angel from Val) Obviously this is an abusive relationship but, let’s not rule out the possibility that Angel might be shown (more so in Season 2 than what the song Poison showcased) to have romantic/genuine moments with Val, not just before the abuse but in present time as well. I say this because Angel himself is a VERY complex character, so adding this aspect to his relationship with Val only just--is the icing on the cake.

ALSO ALSO major shoutout to the VA for Valentino, Joel Perez! They do SUCH an outstanding job at portraying and playing around with Val’s voice (from dramatic and whiney (but a lil flirty) in Episode 2, to playful and straight up menacing/cruel in episode 4. *chef’s kiss*** It’s also wild how complex even Val is written to be (as a villain), he isn’t this cruel villain all of the time when he’s on screen! It all depends on who he’s with and what he’s doing- honestly love that sm

funny enough, spotify put Poison in my shuffle songs, before I even started watching Hazbin Hotel. Like, the algortithm knew what an amazing song that is. And it really is, i'd say this episode is the peak of the season, both song and characterinsight wise. The topics it adresses, the way it somehow managhes to stay... watchable through all that, its immaculate. Props to the team.

This episode is insanely good. It makes you uncomfortable in the perfect places, and breaks you apart just to put you back together again. I adore Poison so much. On its own, the song is a tragic bop. But with the visuals? It is my favorite musical sequence in any animated production. The team matches the audio with the animation perfectly, and it creates such a heartbreaking masterpiece of cinema. It doesn’t shy away from anything at all. It took what Addict had, and tripled it. And despite all of this, the rest of the episode manages to not be overshadowed. A 10/10, would watch and sob uncontrollably again 👌

Emotional roller coaster of an episode. Great action in the penultimate scene, Chaggie cuteness sprinkled in especially in the beginning and end of the episode, some genuinely funny moments that always have me bust laughing… but then there’s the most well written parts of the episode, (the scene in Angel’s dressing room, the Poison music video sequence, and Angel’s breakdown to Husk outside the bar)… 💔😭 It’s to the point now whenever I watch the episode after the scene in Angel’s dressing room, (the hardest part of the episode IMO), I always pause the episode for a minute to compose myself and stop myself from sobbing. As hard as this episode is to watch, it’s my favorite episode.

Oh, and I wanted to add : keep in mind how like with the second chorus, all this cosmic choreography... happens in the Angel’s head. This is his way of abstracting himself from the horror that is happening to his body. He craves his own reality... Until he is forsed back by Val (🖕🤬)

I definitely can’t make it through this episode without crying. It’s just so emotional AF. Also if you haven’t heard it yet, or even if you have, I’d love to see a reaction video to the remix of Poison by TheLivingTombstone. That remix is great and it actually includes some of the dialogue from this episode. It makes the song go from sad and catchy, to sad, terrifying, and catchy. God I love that song so much. Definitely my favorite song in the show despite how devastating it is.

I really appreciate how raw and unfiltered it was portrayed here and the way Valentino is written as this endlessly despicable villain is so admirable. Incredible episode, one of the best I've ever seen in animation in general.

One thing I really hope we get to see you react to is the ending of Hell’s Greatest Dad. Pretty much every reaction I’ve seen that part always seems to get edited out and it’s a shame because it’s hilarious AF especially because of everyone’s reactions to Mimzy’s sudden entrance. I especially love Husk’s reaction because he’s face palming. We learn later in the episode that she’s showed up randomly before so him face palming at her showing up randomly is hilarious because you can tell he’s got that “not this bitch again” look on his face. 😂

I never know what to say in reactions for this episode just because in some ways it hits so close to home, but I really think you nailed it in your analysis. And for what it's worth I was and still am just as uncomfortable watching it as you were but like you pointed out I'm pretty sure that's the point, because you shouldn't be comfortable with a lot of the things depicted in this episode. Great reaction and thank you for coming at this so respectfully, it just makes me appreciate your reactions and breakdowns even more.

Okay, when you start watching "Helluva Boss," (not a spoiler, I promise) one sinner says "One mistake and you end up down here with the Hitlers and the Epsteins of the world," implying the sense of being surrounded by monsters as punishment. I bring this up because Alastor gives me the opposite vibe. He's not trapped here with the monsters. The monsters are trapped down here... with him.

13:10 👀💦 kinda same mistake. Poor Charlie, she really struggles with "mature" communication. Kinda doesn't know when to stop, really. With Bagge as well - not to mention she brought her girlfriend in whole mess of daily exercises without warning & letting her to get prepared, she couninued out her own vision after first thing went "not the way we hoped". I love our princes , but I really think this situation was tru education for her, rough, hursh, dangerous even. Somebody can learn only by these wsys(

Also one thing to note, neither lucifer or charkie can free angel or any soul from their overlords The sinners sell their souls out of their own free will And no one not even lucifer or the angels can supserseed free will It's why Val says to Angel that chalrie can't do anynting cause Angel sold himself to Val out of his own free will.

Solo porque eres tu poaneo verme el capítulo entero, despues de 20 veces de ver toda la serie se vuelve medio tedioso ver el capítulo entero, pero tus comentarios y observaciones sin duda lo valen. Para mi este es el mejor capítulo solo por Angel Dust. Sin duda tu sufrimiento vale la pena por ver el mejor capítulo que tiene esta serie (en mi opinión claro está) Aunque eso si, no puedo con Charlie en este episodio, se mete demasiado donde no puede hacer nada y lo arruina. Claro, no es su culpa, es culpa de Lucifer y Lilith por ser unos padres de mierda que no educaron adecuadamente a su hija para la vida en el infierno
