For people that understand how this is inspirational, I completely understand. This is a very niche type of courage that mostly distance runners would probably understand. It is so hard to race from the front. Everyone's coming at you, and you have no one to chase down, which normally results in the lead runner falling back eventually. Coming from a runner that has lead and lost the race multiple times, I understand how impossible it is to accelerate like that after holding the lead. The fact that he was defy those odds in the last 100 was incredible.
@mantralibre1367
@mantralibre1367 3 года назад
Let me understand, because that sprint was just so unbelievable : did he slow on purpose to have the second to think he had it already, and then pushed again? Because any other hypotesis is really beyond my concept of human. 👀👀👀👀

I’m a middle distance runner and have watched loads of track and field races, but admittedly didn’t come across this particular race before. Basically with the last 200 m to go in a 10km race, you are emptying the tank and giving everything you got. Steve Jones was running a terrific pace as it was and was overtaken near the finish. This is terribly demoralising and almost always results in defeat because you are already giving everything you got. Add to that, Steve jones was not known to have a great ‘kick’ - an ability to really run really fast near the end of a long race. I’ve never seen anyone come back from that kind of situation the way Steve did - where he found that extra gear and to fight the psychological blow and dig very deep to pull that off- there is a reason why this doesn’t really happen in middle/long distance running. You get passed near the end - you’ve lost……that is why it’s unbelievable to see…..

Thank you for this. I've watched it about 50 times over the years. It's the classic definition of courage from the heart - running a perfect 50m sprint at the end of a 10km race! Look, I've been to war twice and it's hard before, during, and after. You have to stick through it. This movie is a beautiful abstract symbol for enduring and triumphing.

A windy August 26th 1983 in Brussels. Julian Goater led the pack through halfway in 14:02 before Jonesy threw down a 64 lap to completely break up the field. That in itself is bloody courageous, let alone his last 200m in 27.8 to beat the reigning commonwealth champion. Especially considering this was Steve's 4th 10000m race in 19 days! Legend.

All you people that said this doesn't take courage, you've clearly never "left it all on the field", you people have absolutely no idea the amount of pain and the fear that comes with 100% exertion. True 100% exertion is incredibly painful, once you feel like dying and throwing up and your gasping for air and that voice in your head is saying fuck this, thats when you pull that other person out from deep inside, the one that got you to the track in the first place, and you silence that weak voice and push 10x harder then ever before. That takes a lot more courage than anything you keyboard trolls have done I'd bet.

I heard and believed those same things about my running. Then one night at the state championship a better runner came up on me with two laps to go. He'd beaten me just that way the year before, but this one night I didn't let him by. That was 50 years ago, and people in my hometown still talk to me about what it was like to watch it.

I love this, having run 10k's and marathons myself, I know once you're passed near the finish, it's 'goodnight'. It's said in boxing that the great ones get up when they can't, and that's what Steve Jones did that night, he could have been a gutsy second, but like the great fighters he got up off the canvass. Thanks for posting this inspiring video.

Anybody who does not see this as courageous has never competed and been in a situation like this. To be in a race, or game, or whatever, and be so close to winning, only to see yourself losing at the very end, is heartbreaking. It will, and has, humbled most people. This guy was truly amazing, inspiring and yes, courageous. He showed tremendous heart which is another word for courage, You didn't need the Rocky theme, or the words. It speaks for itself. Bravo.

As a former distance runner this was a great display of courage, jump out in front and risk the humiliation of dying at the end. Been there, done that and at this level that was an amazing race. Prefontaine once said the only reason he was a winner was he learned to endure more pain than anyone else.

I saw this race on TV when it was first broadcast. It's the sort of thing that sticks in your brain. When I found this on You Tube it took me right back to the evening when I watched it. I was convinced it was the race I remembered until the final bend when he was being chased down at some alarming rate - it was all over. Then I was convinced this was not the race I saw all those years ago as surely he cannot come back from this. I was really confused and convinced he'd lost the race until the final 100 metres. It was amazing to see it all those years ago and even more so today.. I had forgotten all about this race. What inspiration. As for the line "Jones looks for trouble and the trouble is there" - brilliant. Thanks very much for posting this.

+Mark Savoie I cannot be sure but it was a long time ago so could have been mid 80s or early 90s. If you googled the athletes you might be able to gauge the rough year from their approximate ages and possibly determine the race meeting from that. From that you would be able to find the results online somewhere I imagine. If you find out, please reply as I'd like to know. It's an amazing race and even now I show this to people and they are amazed.

I don't understand how this is honorable or courageous. He won a race. It's great that he won and it definitely shows determination and hard work, but that doesn't really have anything to do with honor. I guess he was courageous for trying but.. I don't know, I just don't see it. (Please don't rip into me. If someone would help me to understand NICELY, it'd be appreciated)
@defb4dishonor211

I'm a little late but I'll try and give my thoughts. In a race it is mentally exhausting to lead as you have to worry about pacing and what not. I have seen numerous races where the leader has been overtaken on the last turn and just accepted not getting first. In this case not only losing the lead, but being told he wasn't good enough glorifies how courageous he is for winning and taking that chance. As for the honor part, he is representing his country and he proved everyone wrong.
@jgpuglisi

hon·or ˈänər/ noun noun: honour; noun: honor 1. high respect; esteem. In this case, he felt honored when they praised him for winning. To him, it was a trial, not just a race.

Racing, especially leading from the front is the most difficult to win, and usually athletes of this level are incredibly nervous coming down to race day. The courage comes from the ability to know that a tremendous amount of pain is inevitable, win or not, and the fear of failure is also omnipresent. The honor is simply nationalistic pride that an athlete gets when he earns a medal for his nation.
@vincentpol
@vincentpol 9 лет назад
Yeah, if people could just stop glorifying athletes, for basically doing a repetitive task really well, and glorify the greater minds of our time, that'd be great, because this has nothing to do with courage.

vincentpol I don't think it's particularly courageous, but indeed it is remarkable and interesting how the commentators seemed to write him off. Physical achievement takes thousands of hours of practice and determination and should be glorified up there with the great minds of our time.

ozups No, I'm sorry, but saying that athletes shouldn't be glorified is not being 'closed-minded', but I agree that your statement was.

Maybe you have never been a runner, or perhaps not even involved in athletics. I don't know what your background is. It is courageous in the sense that I can pretty much guarantee you that his legs were burning and his lungs were on fire. Vince Lombardi once said "Fatigue makes cowards out of us all". This is a true statement. It does take a degree of courage to be able to ignore the fact that your legs and lungs are SCREAMING for you to stop, and rationalizing with you in every way possible to just give up and every part of your body wants to stop, to quit,to slow down, but despite all of this you find it somewhere within you to keep going. Muhammad Ali had it. Joe Frazier had it. Michael Jordan had it. Rocky Marciano had it, Just to name a few.

I agree with you confessions. I ran long distance races in High School and I love this video and I am very impressed by the winner But, determination is the word I would use to describe his effort.

But not every "normal" person has the ability to reach down and do what he did. That takes courage in and of itself. Not exactly an "ordinary" performance.

When I was a kid I lived a couple of doors away from Steve Jones in South Wales. We used to see him training on the streets around the town. We used to try to keep up with him on our bikes. We would fail.

I think the characteristic on display here was determination really. It’s very rare you see somebody get passed out like that at that stage of a race and then surge back. When you’re running a digging deep there is often no pain like it with your body just screaming for you to stop.
