This scene HITS DIFFERENT! So good in the anime and it was our favourite scene in the Live-Action as well. We’re flying through One Piece over on Patreon! Our reactions to episodes 61 & 62 go live in a few days. www.patreon.com/carlie_and_ange
The fact that Luffy *_doesn't_* know Nami's backstory here makes all the difference for me. He doesn't know, and he _doesn't care._ A friend is a friend, and the person they are _now_ is what matters. He doesn't really judge, he just wants people to be honest with themselves and their desires.
Still that scene where everyone feels “yes, I’m in this for the long haul!”. One of my Twitter friends finally saw the scene the other day. He had started falling for the series at Baratie but agrees this scene is what really did it for him.
One thing I love about Luffy is that he doesn't understand anything about Nami's backstory. He doesn't even want or need to know anything. All he needed to hear was that Nami asked him for help. Luffy is the kind of guy that will help his friends no matter what without hesitation. You don't need to explain yourself to Luffy. You dont need to justify why you need his help. All you need to do is ask for it and he will do anything in his power to be there for you. Luffy is a real one.
It's not even about asking for help from Luffy. Luffy magically knows what his friend in need wants. In the case of Nami, it was "help me". *Spoilers* In the case of Robin, it was "I want to live". In the case of Sanji, it was " I want to go back to Sunny". In the case of Momo, it was " I want to defeat Kaido". I think this is one of the main reasons people love Luffy as the MC.
Luffy hear nami screaming arlong's name and ask luffy for help. That's why when he punched the gate, he straight up ask who is arlong without knowing the Nami's backstory. Small details but very impactful indeed.
This backstory in the anime kind of portrays why Nami refused to ask for help from the crew for so long. Every time she asked for help someone got seriously hurt.
@@piusdoe8984 it's not spelled out in that moment but if Bellemere hadn't done exactly what she did at that moment both Nami and Nojiko would have ended up dead.
Gen and the villagers didnt want to let Nami know that they knew about her situation, so she couldn't feel guilty if she ever wanted to leave and escape. ps. I also love how Luffy doesn't even know who Arlong is, hence him asking "Which one of you is Arlong". He just knows someone named Arlong made Nami cry
Everytime i watch that scene with Nami, I cry everytime. Nami's voice actor puts everything she has in that scene. Super emotional. Gotta love One Piece!!! ❤
Yes! He totally understood Nami not wanting anyones help and doing everything by herself, so he decided not to do anything until she asks him to. I love it
@@burezu9190trueeee, she also doesn't want them to die or get hurt that's why she wants them to leave the island. But she wanted to be with them, be part of the crew, and sail with them, she's so happy that she smiles genuinely but she can't because she still have problems to solve.
@coco-sh2ny yes, Luffy may not be able to always read the room, but he's very good at reading people, so he kind of knew what Nami was doing, even if he didn't know what exactly was going on.
A lot of people were hooked onto to the series when they saw the "Help Me" scene 🙌🏻 In my case i was hooked as soon as I saw Luffy pop out of that barrel But still after all these years the "Help Me" scene forever remains iconic and just as impactful as it was on the first watch
Same I was hooked by the first episode and Ive seen a lot of shonen & shonjo anime before then so it was hard for me to instantly get hooked to a story without the typical characters
i used to challenge people to watch to episode 50 and tell me they still dont like it. it was a strategy based on getting them to watch 37 and getting caught off guard, the 50 mark was just arbitrary haha
My friend had the manga and I read up to that part. Thts when I knew OnePiece was amazing! Before the drawing style gave me pause. But after that I just had to read it
The Thing is Luffy totally understands that Nami doesn't want anyone's help and is actively trying to shoulder the entire burden on her own, and that she wants to do everything by herself. So he just decides to not do anything and stay on the island, waiting for the moment that Nami herself comes to a realisation and ask him for help herself. What a Man. 😭 There are lots and lots of Luffy moments where you'll see just how beautifully his character is written, which is why when a certain portion of the fandom says there is no depth to Luffy, I just question their comprehension skills. But i can't actively blame them because unlike other characters, Luffy's writing is not explicitly shown on the surface and is relatively nuanced. So you really have to pay attention to him and his actions to get a grasp of his depth. (Ofcourse he is not the deepest character but he is not a simple one either) There are layers to him. 🙌🏻
I always like to point out how Oda gave Nami agency by having Luffy not help her until she asks for it. He makes it obvious how strong she's been through all these years, and that she has been fighting the hardest, and when she can't go through it all alone anymore, that's when she gets to ASK for help, not just be helped, she gets to make that decision and it is not taken away from her. She is not written as a Damsel in distress, she's written as a badass that realises she's at her limit.
Exactly! It sticks, too. There's an observation on that made by Mama Drawk of the Drawk Show: "Luffy forces the people he saves to take active roles in their salvation." He's not some knight in shining armor; if you want help, you have to help him help you.
This was a big luffy moment as well. Luffy doesn't need to know about anyone's past for the incentive to fight. He's fighting for nami because she asked him as a friend, nothing more. ❤
My biggest complaint about the live action was that they changed the fact that the villagers knew about Nami's goal. Took away a lot of impact for me. There were changes that made sense, but then there were changes like this that I felt were completely unnecessary.
Well, my biggest complaint about the live action was that Bellemere REALLY sacrificed herself. In the Anime the bluff worked but she stopped Arlong and said that they money is for their kids. In the Live-Action Arlong just found the kids. Of course Bellemere sacrificed herself too but it had way less emotional impact. Also the message from Bellemere about "don't say that we are not a familiy" (when the slapped kid Nami) from the previous episode was totally ignored which was the most important point of the backstory. This was also completely unnecessary.
Yeah minus the key emotional scenes from the actors , especially obviously Nami's , and the visuals , this is the arc and part i found quite weak in the LA . The handling of Bellemere , Nojiko , and the villagers did not sit well with me . Of course i completely understand it being a hit with people that did not watch the anime , nor read the manga , it is still such a powerful moment . But any comparison here destroys the LA
Well, you need time to set the story up, and the flashbacks are what sells the moment. The live-action just didn't have the time, that's why that moment feels too rushed for me in the live action. Also, I thought the running back and forth was really weird for that. Why did they not rather cut the Arlong-Nami interaction? it's basically just: "I can't believe you betrayed me!" - "Well, ... I am the villain of this arc..." *Nami runs back to the villages*.
@@Falko-wer yes and no ... some choices like showing the villagers , Nojiko and Gen actively not knowing about Nami , took about as much air time , with new different scenes , than just showing that they knew . In some cases it was more artistic licence and liberties than time constraint
Luffy's simple-mindedness is just so wholesome. Like throughout the arc, he was like; "This food is mine!" "There are seven of those warlords? Cool!" "Do fishmen look like this?" "Oh, so those are Fishmen." "That pinwheel on that guy's hat looks cool!" ...and even after he saw Nami's breakdown, he is still simple-minded but with a different tone; "Yes you told me to leave" "Of course I will!" "Which one of you is Arlong?" Zoro knows something's up with Nami since the beginning of the arc. Usopp and Sanji heard the backstory. But the main reason for Luffy to go find and fight the fishman who he doesnt even know what he looks like is just because he saw Nami crying and asks for help
I f#king love Luffy. He didn't know about the village's or Nami's past. He didn't know who Arlong was or what he did to Nami... But Nami was criying.... And that was more than enought.
You nailed it about Arlong being different from the other opposing captains they’ve faced so far. He genuinely cares about his crew of fishmen. Their brotherhood and unity gives a different feel from the other crews the Strawhats have fought in the East Blue. And I like that you picked up on the fact that Nami just doesn’t want anyone to get hurt anymore, both the village and the Strawhats. That’s something that always gets me, watching little Nami asking Gen to stop trying to save her so no one else will die, and then her seeing the village heading off to their deaths because Arlong reneged on his deal with her. It’s the one of the biggest changes from the live action that I missed the most (that and Hachi).
Yes. It was never Nami's plan; it was Arlong who planted the idea by promising to give her something she desired strongly enough to make her agree to work for them.
I love how both of you guys got so invested in one of my fave series ever, and this is the first time where I'm tempted to be a Patreon ngl. Like hearing you guys' thoughts and opinions about things are genuinely interesting.
Nojiko and the villagers knowing about what Nami did all along is the only thing that I regret didn't make it into the live action. I realize it would have taken up too much time to resolve that plotline, but it has such beautiful moments.
The reason Nami didn't ask for help thus far, is because everytime when she shout for help there's someone gets hurt/killed, and she doesn't want it to happen
There is just something special about Luffy getting Angry/Serious. he is messing around and being silly for 99% of the time, but the second he locks in and actually starts being a captin its just straight chills
What i love about how Oda writes his female characters... Sure they ask for help and on paper look like damsels in distress... But thats completely wrong. The damsels have been FIGHTING for years. They have been shouldering all the pain on their own because they are strong. Luffy isnt here to just save them as the hero. Luffy doesnt act until they want him to. Hes a sword for them to wield.
This episode hooked me on One Piece, and Nami became my favorite character. It was so well done, and the voice actress did a phenomenal job. I still cry like a baby when I watch this episode. Not going to lie, I was getting annoyed when Nami wasn't on your list for such a long time despite being such a great character. However, I never said anything because it's still your list, and I didn't want to influence your decisions. Anyway, I love both of your reactions and long discussions.
If you dissect this scene and how all has led to it in the anime, it is probably one of the best. There is just so much more to it than in the live action
0:16 I think it comes from french "Belle-mère" which means "Step mother" or "Belle mère" which means beautiful mother or "Belle mer" which means "Beautiful sea" lol
up until this episode, One Piece had been a real slow burn for me. up until this episode, i wasn't sure i wanted to go on. up until this episode, i had no idea of the 15 year journey i was about to embark on. One Peak is right. this show is a masterpiece.
Luffy not knowing who arlong is was a very important point to show his character. But i guess he had to face a foe on the baratie to be thrown into the sea, and since they skipped don krieg, it was arlong :/
This arc made lots of people hook into the anime. The story gets better after this arc so no one is saying it’s their best arc but it is the start of the best story.
The episode that sealed the deal for most of us One Piece fans. Note how Luffy did not hear her backstory and that he doesn't care what her background is, he's just helping a friend who asked for help. I absolutely love him. You don't know how much this pirate boy made of rubber means to me.
noo i was crying about bellemere being killed and then you guys talked about the midroll thingies being horrible and that made me laugh. now im cry-laughing on a sunday afternoon at my desk!! good thing no one can see me im pretty sure i look mental
This arc is so important to me, because I love and understand nami in different level, up until now. Her character is not perfect, but I like the way it is. I don't justify some of her actions (being physical) but I completely understand her stress level and I'm worried she might get high blood or something😭 She has been with the crew for a few weeks? (From start til arlong park) I'm not sure anymore but she smiled genuinely with them and she even cared about them. And her root about obsession with money is so clear, because it's salvation for her. She could've be with bellemere if only they have enough money, they all could've be free from arlong pirates if they all have money. And with money, they can buy necessary things that they need to stay alive and well during sailing (as pirate crew) Nami is not perfect, that's why I love her as a character. She might be not the strongest female character here, but she do her best as the navigator of the crew and as a support fighter that other people might not appreciate, but I do. Each straw hats are not perfect, but they fill each other's weaknesses that's why everything goes well for them. That's their dynamic, that's their teamwork. Each one of them plays their roles, and no one should ever invalidate or count the things they do for the crew.
God the "help me" is so much better in the manga/anime than in the live action. I love it in the live action but there are elements missing that just make it better. Nojiko and the village knowing about Nami's true motive for working with Arlong in the manga and Nami trying to put on a brave face to tell the villagers that she'll get the money back make her breakdown so much more impactful. So having those elements makes Nami feel more desperate. And while it's hard to watch Nami stab herself, it really feels like a mutilation in the anime and manga.
The best part about the "help me" scene is that luffy didn't pay attention to when Nojiko was talking about Nami's past. So he had no idea why she did what she did and he didn't need to. All he knew was that somebody named Arlong made her cry. Plus he gave his most prized possession to a thief who already stole from him. That didn't matter to him either. The walk to arlong park is one of those moments where a lot of people, myself included, realized that One Piece is truly something special. Episode 37 originally aired back in the year 2000 and almost 25 years later it still holds up
These episodes are generally the ones where anyone that was still on the fence about continuing the daunting journey through the OP anime (or manga readers too) decide they're in it for the long haul. Nami's backstory was an emotional home run, and Luffy leading Zoro, Sanji, and Ussop to settle things gives you chills. Even Johnny and Yosaku were moved to take action and kept the villagers from throwing themselves into a meat grinder when they knew there were others on the way that had a much better chance of success. As far as your crews, I hope nobody gets too heated about their favorites being excluded in the comments. They're your crews, based on your favorites at this point in the show. You'll likely want to add a few slots as the total list of characters gets much larger over the arcs, and perhaps even another antagonist slot or two or else recency bias will likely take over, since Oda's so damn good at what he does with what's going on currently in the story.
22:26 "I just wish I could have seen that for the first time" This episode aired 24 years ago, and every time I watch it I think the same thing. Looking forward to vicariously watching the next major saga for the first time through you two, and beyond!
I started watching your reaction from this episode and I really like how both of you pick your own crew as you go especially the Captains Laughs*. I'm happy Carlie stuck to her gut and chose Arlong as Most Wanted over Marine Rat.
luffy is the kind of person who will do anything for his friends and he sees through them but as long as they dont tell them what they really want he wont do anything he is forcing everyone to be honest with themselves and with him in order for him to be able to help them, you can see how he was just waiting for nami to ask for help and didnt do much before that because he didnt know what was really going on.
i find this scene so much better in the anime. In the anime all hope was lost, villagers were going to die soon for nami, which wasnt a thing in the LA. Along with lots of other small things. although emily (the actor for nami) did do a good job. The main thing i disliked about the LA adoption of this arc was how much they butchered the villagers. I get it was kinda for time purposes.
What was very interesting here, and really breaking the stereotype of the MC listening to the sad story and then rushing for help his friend, is that Luffy don't know a thing about what happened to Nami. He doesn't care at all, he only knows that she needs help and when he saw her cry and she asked for his help, he chose to help her, nothing more. He doesn't need reasons to get pumped up and kick enemy's ass, her friend is in trouble and he helps, he doesn't need any more reasons. Actually it's funny cause out of the four crewmates, only half of them know what happened to Nami. Luffy didn't want to listen and Zoro took a nap because, as he said, the moment Luffy chooses their fate is already sealed so he doesn't care to listen about Nami past because if the captain wanna help her, that's exactly what they're gonna do.
And what's more on this, is that Luffy doesnt know her past. He doesnt need to. He was just there ready to help her. Even puting his greatest treasure for Nami to hold on to it. That's what makes him different from any other MC out there.
I loved the live action, but watching the anime afterwards, I have to say, they didn't do Bellemere justice! In the live action they made her too motherly and organized when she was kind of a brat just like Nami is. Also she's WAY more badass in the anime, I wish they had done the scene where she kicks down Arlong and puts the rifle in his mouth because she's THAT bitch. Idk I just love Bellemere in the anime, lol.
There is one thing that you guys will learn as you keep watching more episodes is that One Piece has some of the best group shots/poses of the Straw hat pirate crew captured in single frames and those happen at very unique moments and turning points in the story.
carlie's nezumi impression was by far the top moment of my day one bs: your crew list HAS to get bigger as the anime goes on, or i feel you'll have a breakdown trying to decide between the 1635473849473 amazing characters to come
Truly the best episodes of the east-blue saga, just two details for fun: 1. Nezumi (the rat) is a word play with nezou (mouse) and oumi (ocean) both in Japanese. 2. Bellemere is French (belle-mère) for stepmother. With this, Oda sensei addresses again one of his favorite themes, found family. Other themes are yet to be addressed in the upcoming sagas, but this one is the most important in my opinion, as it binds not only the straw hats but also most of the characters that we meet while going through the one piece journey together.
