Growing up in New York City, E Garcia embraced being a tomboy and loved it when people weren’t sure of their gender. After relentless bullying during puberty, however, E eventually conformed to gender expectations and took on a very feminine appearance. Fortunately, after meeting other gender non-binary people as an adult, E eventually returned to their roots - buzz cut and all.

I’ve always thought I was just being a tomboy but right now during my teenage stage. I’m questioning if I’m a non binary or just a tomboy, cause I started to feel REALLY uncomfortable wearing dresses and people referring me a woman or a lady. Sometimes I’ll be hundred percent sure that I’m a non binary but the next day I’ll question again whether I’m faking it or not....

I came out as a tomboy at the age 3 and never looked back. When I had to dress like a girl I felt very uncomfortable as well as didn't feel right.

It is very nice to know that people find their autonomy and along with that also love and bonding. That one does not exclude the other. E is very lucky for that and I'm glad for them.

A question from a non-native speaker: When someone wants to be addressed with "they" as pronoun, do you then use it in singular like in "they is enjoying pizza" or the grammatically correct plural?

good question. Though I am not an expert, and only sometimes refer to myself as they/them, I believe you use the grammatically correct plural. So you would say "they are enjoying pizza." From what I have heard, the people who argue against they/them pronouns argue against them because they believe saying "they" for one person is incorrect grammar, but in practice "they" can refer to someone of a nonbinary or unknown gender, so their argument isn't really valid.

It’s like when you refer to someone who you don’t know their gender “I spoke to this really rude customer today” “oh really? What did they say?”

Another note on this: using plural verbs follows the precedent set by the singular "you", as does the use of "themself" instead of "themselves" :)

How do you know if you are non binary or just a tomboy?

I would say being a tomboy is more external like your expression through the clothes you wear and activities you do, vs nonbinary is about your internal experience of yourself as a gender. Tomboy is a girl who sometimes/often acts and dresses differently than a femme.
