I remember watching this last yr for the first time during my 4th month of pregnancy. My hubby was really worried and warned me that I had to be careful watching this episode cause it's gonna hurt - I just bled like a few days before. T'was a very sensitive time but I still went on and cried indefinitely and stop watching for a whole week to rest and make sure my emotions won't affect my baby any further 🤣 Now I'm totally caught up with the anime and will name my baby after a certain character from OP as I go into labor next month 🤗❤️
Almost 17 years have passed since the first time I saw Merry's funeral. And every time I hear him/her apologize for not being able to continue the adventure, I burst into tears. It's hard.😢😭
One of those episodes that makes me cry no matter how many times I rewatch! Also, when was the last time an author was able to make you cry about a goddamn ship huh! Oda is on another level
Something I've come to appreciate about One Piece over time are the occasions when hard realities set in. So much of the series is fantastical, even absurd at times; but then there are times like this. There is no miracle cure or last minute fix for the Going Merry. She's simply accumulated too much damage and can't continue on. So we the audience and the Straw Hats are forced to say good-bye to the Going Merry. The crew overcame incredible odds in Enies Lobby, but not even they could save their ship. Rest in peace, Going Merry. You are gone, but you won't be forgotten.

During an interview, the voice actress of Robin said that they had to redo the voice recording several times because all the staff, including the voice actors, couldn't stop crying with the scene. And later I heard that Oda made the scene several times until he made himself cry to feel satisfied with it.

Never trust someone who doesn't shed a single tear at Merry's funeral. That person's dead inside... or, in the case of Jackie from JDAnime, has Dorian Grey'd their emotions into someone else.
Watching you jinx the crap out of yourselves, I knew exactly how much you'd regret saying those words. This is for me the heaviest hitting emotional episode of the series, and this series has a lot of them. But it being about a _ship_, a friend of the first hour that is always conveniently ignored because it is an object... god, that cuts so deep.
It's not just a ship, it's someone in our lives that we should've cared for more or the things we could've and should've done but noticed too late, a reference to the people we've loved and lost that we should've shared more time with or helped out in their hard times better or told them we loved them as much as we do and someone regardless of our shortcomings they loved us to the point of indescribable. If only they could've carried us through the waters of life just a bit longer. RIP merry and RIP to the ones loved and lost... It's not just a ship.
Fun Fact: Before Robins rescue she always called the crew by their assigned jobs/roles I think EP 311 is the first Episode where she starts calling the crew by their actual Names :)
The time has finally come. The ship makes me cry. Welcome to the Japanese realm. Before long, I feel a soul in the house I live in, and I feel grateful for everything. I can feel the soul and warmth of everything and live happily. Before I knew it, I had a big family lol
I forgot to mention something. When something breaks, Japanese people are creatures who think that it has taken someone else's place. That fundamental feeling is the idea of helping. People and things will break down one day as well. That is why people learn to break while they are alive, and live in the present to the fullest. They will contribute until the very end. Every story has as many endings as there are beginnings. Just like people's lives, things have that too. That is why we want to cherish everything. I want to say thank you with all my heart. The point is Usopp is not respecting the captain's decision. He should reflect and apologise to Luffy for being stubborn. Quiting the group just because of emotions. Luffy didn't do anyhthing wrong.
Luffy was totally in the wrong too. IMO his wrong was wayyyy worse than insubordination. Merry wasn't just a ship. She was their crew mate. I wouldn't have respected Luffy's decision either. At least, the way he made his decision. It didn't really hit Luffy until he heard Merry's voice.
@@MrBigTrey Are you forgetting they're on a mission to find One Piece? It's the whole reason this Pirate crew exists. Merry can't get them further, so when were they supposed to get a new ship? Luffy's the captain, he got the advice of an expert and they ended up with a new ship.
@@imaratspal Let me ask you this, if it were Usopp that were gravely injured, dying, and couldn't continue the journey would Luffy have kicked him to the curb like that and said, "Well, let's go get a new sniper?"
