Netflix's live action One Piece is finally here.
Luffy, Zoro, Nami, Sanji, and Usopp have set sail to Shell Island, Baratie, the Gecko Islands, the Conomi Islands / Arlong Park and more. But is the show any good?

There are changes, which were not only expected, but necessary to move this show at a pace that won't take 30 years to make with the expectations that it will have further seasons. The first couple episodes, for example, have the benefit for covering arcs that span less than 5 episodes of the anime for their respective arcs. After that, they only get two episodes to cover arcs that span no less than 9 episodes. They only had 8 episodes to cover 44 episodes of the anime. Even if we are generous and say the anime episodes last 15 minutes a piece, that's still almost 3 hours of time they needed to shave off due to budget. That's a lot of material they are literally forced to cut and they were still able to give us a story that, at the very least, has a respect for the source material. The changes made weren't in any ways significant enough to change the overall story and that is why it's acceptable. It's not perfect but it's still recognizable as One Piece from start to finish and I feel that's precisely why it's successful. Even the changes didn't try to deviate from the source material by far. If nothing else, the things they removed were just filled by other plot points or characters that already existed. I was blown away and honestly? I cannot wait for a second season.

I loved that Mihawk fought Don Krieg as a side event. They had him in the show to honor the character, but he wasn't a headliner. We laughed when we even saw Pearl laying on the beach! Great Easter Egg!

You know they really poured the heart and soul into this show, every detail they kept and changes they made kept true to the essence of one piece. They have set a new standard for anime/cartoon live action adaptations. Heck even Disney and Star Wars have been falling short recently.

The only thing i really missed, though i understand why it was hard to add, was Hachi. I think that was how you spelled his name? The octopus fishman swordsman has a noticeable role to play in the later parts of the story, and his early introduction is part of why he can play that role. Except for that, great adaptation!

A peak of 8.5 out of 10 and a bottom base of 4.5 out of 10. Being vague for obvious. Those being spoilers. The reason I give it a peak of 8.5 is the following. I like the way they where able to incorporate the overall established lore that only grew and became more believable over the course of the One Piece manga. Thus the liberties taken only helped to bolster the overall world of the live action with its limited framework of 8 episodes. Now the reason why I'm giving it a bottom base of 4.5. These liberties failed to encapsulate the overall emotions the original sought to convey to the reader. While it is understandable that it's due to the limitations of time and budget but that has always been the primary gripe with these adaptations. While it's not the liberties that are at fault more than it is time and budget it is still a shame we can't get the initial intentions to be properly showcased. While it is overall a divisive take imho it's a necessary evil that must taken because a fanbase created by this live action will not have the same level of understanding as those following closely the source material. This to me happened a lot since episode 1 and it's a minor gripe that is persistent throughout the show and as a fan of the original I just can't let it slide because it's been more than 1 fandom that has had to go through these sorts of schism. While it ain't always exclusive to anime vs live action but also subs vs dubs. Yet this is my personal take and bias. Overall it's still a very enjoyable 8 episodes.

The only change I really didn't like was Nojiko not knowing why Nami joined Arlong, hence the entire meaning of her tats were brushed away

I did not mind all of other characters histories being resumed in the live action, but in the case of Nami they made unnecessary changes like that, it could be way better with the same time they had it.

The key to a good adaptation is to not change the best parts and in the rest, do the kind of changes that make fans think to themselves 'oh, I wonder how they will do this next part'

very very good for a live action. but i would have liked them to have included some of the dialogue such as luffy beating up cody so that hes not associated with them, or even sanji's young scene where he questions his seniors on why they are eating food from the dump. many of these little details do build up the character development in the story. i also feel that garp and cody has way too much screen time when their part should come in much later.

I really loved it, the only thing I will change is the constant close-up shots to the actors’ faces. Some were good, but others didn’t do the actors justice

Needed to be (at least) 16 episodes, instead of a measly 8. But that's a good complaint to be making.

it’s great, yet rushed. ~17 hours East Blue Saga to be cut down to 6.5 is a tough choice. Simple scenes, as the villagers to be outside Arlong Park, Namis flying desk, the cop holding luffys head over water and their conversation were part of the character building. I agree, not everything can or should be adapted, but who wouldn’t have loved to see Luffy attacking Arlong with his own teeth? 🤪

I am not one piece fan but I wanted to consume the history.. buy, y'all know how long that is, so this is a very enjoyable way to this point and I am already loving some characters :)

Read the manga in color if you could. The pacing is way better, and is also the author original view. It is long but after you liked it, you will actually want more. And each arc has its own history and is very good, so is enjoyable, you dont need to catch up to the recent chapter to them find it good, you can read each arc in its own pace.

I agree, even if it's good, they need more budget. I'm cool with this season, but the next one needs more budget becuase things will be weird, more fantasy than this season, and it has to increase even more to be better than this season 1, because it was good, but not perfect, it's way away from being on the level of the manga, even if season 1 is enjoyable, they need to increase more and more the budget, one piece is a series that needs money if you want to do its justice

@@danielefortini536i mean, they invested quite a lot of money. We didn’t get many episodes, but what we got was top notch. The setting were beautiful, the shots at the sea were really good. I think, it was more that I was hoping for coming from a company that decided to take the risk on investing so much in a project like one piece. If it does really good, maybe we could get a better second season though

The only problem with the show was the acting of Iñaki (the actor who plays Luffy). Everyone's performance was on point except his. The production was great, and the script was great. But that actor spoiled a few moments with his low-quality acting. They might need to get him an acting coach for season 2 or just to recast him

Luffy's exact character will be impossible to replicate so I had to tone down my expectation a lot. The actor did good in the face of Luffy's extremely unique character.

Re read the beginning of the manga after watching, and I actually like some of the changes the show make. Incorporating Nami into the first arc against Morgan for instance. Kuro's plan also felt less convoluted than the manga. My only problem is with the arlong park arc. It still baffle me the writer of the show did not only race-swapped Nojiko unnecessarily, they let her own a gun under Arlong's reign, while not being on Nami's side. All of that for what? 30 seconds of her pointing it at the straw hats? She didn't even get to use that gun when the marines take Nami's money or in Arlong's park. Nah man, too much liberty taken for my liking. A huge dent on an otherwise really solid show. 7/10. Could have been an 8 or a 9 had it not been for the changes they made to Nojiko

@@EmikoZue I could point out obvious scenes but I've literally been reading and watching for almost all 24yrs... 61 episodes into 8 and changed a lot and cut too much
