It's always difficult to choose 1 piece of advice to introduce the Alexander Technique. Hope you find it useful! Let me know if you have any other ideas for essential Alexander Technique advice!

This is the first video I watched today and it has made such a HUGE difference in my ability to walk with greater comfort. I have been in extreme pain for about two weeks with what started in my hip flexor and then spread to other areas of my body. I am eager to find out how to actually walk as just this piece of head awareness, has been amazing.

Hello! Love the Alexander Technique. Thank you for this. I find that the Body Mapping approach (which was designed by AT teachers) is a very good complement to what you are talking about. I'm a pianist, and I find that correct mapping of the atlanto-occipital joint (essentially right between the ears) certainly helps me actualize the delicate balancing act of the weight of my head over my sitting bones as I move, so that I avoid unnecessary tension in my head, neck and spine. Thinking of a general buoyancy going from bottom-up, as a natural counter force (think 3rd's Newton law: action-reaction), also helps in refreshing the forward and upwards posture in my case. You might be already aware of all this though, as I understand the desire to create a short video on the topic. This is just my grain of salt :)

Thanks for the comments! Yes, those are all concepts that I use on a daily basis when teaching and reference in quite a few of my videos. Sounds like you've got a good understanding, I hope the technique continues to enrich your piano playing! In addition to the ideas you give, I also like to get musicians to try to embody the gracefulness of the music in the balance and freedom of their bodies, especially the head neck joint. Seems to work well! All the best

I need to thank you for this. I have a friend, Mr Don B White, who is an Alexander Technique instructor, he has been suggesting this to me for years. I have been using this method when walking my dog recently and I really notice so much tension in my neck is reduced. I work at a laptop all day and I think I have gotten used to having my neck pointed forward, I even think it's made me lose some height.

I think the Alexander Technique increases us to be mindful and present, which is important for actors. I have a question, is there a way to release tension from the jaw when using the technique?
@MovementandPosture
@MovementandPosture 2 года назад
Hi Isabella, you are absolutely correct. A lot of my work with actors and musicians is about being more present!. As for the jaw, yes, there are several Alexander Technique approaches to this. I've had quite a few requests for a video about this so I'll get one made asap! You may find my short video on breathing is a good place to start working on this: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Jx3alpqi_9I.html It's always helpful to look at any specific area of tension as part of a whole person pattern of tension but specifically understanding how the jaw works can really help. I'll get on with making a video asap as it's really tricky to summarise anything useful here!

I’ve tried the Alexander technique for several years, but I don’t like that I have to keep thinking about thinking/noticing all the time. There is a lot of mental energy via the AT approach. Also when thinking forward and up, I find that my muscles tense more than release causing a lot of uncomfortable sensations in my neck/shoulders trying to find where they should sit naturally. Feldenkrais has worked better for me.
@MovementandPosture
@MovementandPosture 2 года назад
Glad you've found Feldenkrais useful, there are so many different ways of improving your health; it's good to find the ones that suit you! Sorry to hear that you've struggled with getting the hang of Alexander Technique though. At the start it can seem quite hard work as you become aware of habits and then consciously break them. You shouldn't ever feel more tension or discomfort when thinking these Alexander 'Directions' though as they are preventative thoughts rather than things that you 'do'. If you find yourself interested in the Alexander Technique again in the future then maybe try a different teacher who might be able to make it all a bit clearer for you. In the end, Alexander Technique helps you to have more mental/physical energy which is why it's so popular with musicians, actors etc. All the best, Pete

Hi Claudia, I mention knees in quite a few of the videos but this one is the most specific. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-qSUVxyG7-1w.html. Hope it helps!

I can’t relax my mid section , i am holding tension, the, problem where ? I feel i need to know or discover in order to help heal. Does that make sense , Peter.
@MovementandPosture
@MovementandPosture 3 года назад
That definitely makes sense. Our mid section is very complicated in terms of muscles and is affected by the legs and hips too. Also, this is where a lot of stress and emotions tend to cause tension. I'll have a think to see if I can make a video that would be useful.

Each of us are so unique. Walking Sitting and going to bed each we all do so just keep sharing postures and ask questions kind of like this. I will do it again ? Do i need to hit the bell again ?

Alexander theory can seem paradoxical at times, and it doesn't suit everyone I know. Could I suggest you give one lesson at least a go with an actual teacher? A teacher's hands can help you experience things differently. Give it go, you may be pleasantly surprised. The Society of Teachers of the Alexander Technique (STAT) has a directory to find a teacher near you.
@MovementandPosture
@MovementandPosture Год назад
Agreed! It's hard for the words to fully convey the meaning unless you've had an experience of it but I keep trying anyway! Maybe try a couple of other videos on the channel to see whether it's just this one or the whole Alexander Technique approach that doesn't suit you. Feel free to ask any questions too
