That makes sense: Fiesta is 4 minutes 26 seconds Heart of the City is 3 minutes 44 seconds. AND Jay stops rappin at the 2:55 mark. It checks out.

nah recording a verse in one take is definitely impressive - the breath control required while trying to stay on beat, switch flows, maintain a cadence all without fumbling a single word is certainly a skill - i can barely text a voice note in one take never mind 16 bars 😂

The "one take thing" and "not writing it down" thing is impressive the same way we are impressed by great movie scenes that were ad libed and unscripted. It gives it a mystique of being from the ether. It doesn't take away from the body of work if it's not done in that format, but it adds to it if it is done in that format. This doesn't mean that it should be the standard. These are special moments and artists. Don't try to do this at home kids.

@HERMITBOY

@12:00 The reason a recorded one take rap is impressive, is because a lot of artist may miss pronounce a word, lost some breath control, forgot a line, punched in the second half of a verse because it didn’t sound as good as the first ,cause the energy of it fell off etc. these things aren’t at the for front of our minds, but when brought to our attention, knowing what it takes to write, come up with lyrics, remember it then spit it flawlessly? You dayum right. ITS F**king IMPRESSIVE! And deserves respect. Nothing further your honor.

I will say, as a person who does music myself, it is extremely difficult to do 1 take. It's not as easy as it sounds. Especially if you're doing technical raps and going in and out of pockets a lot. Not to mention breath control and the other small nuances. Which is what makes the 1 take thing very very impressive. With that said, I'm with Guru on this one. As long as the finished product is 🔥 and it's what you envisioned then you've done your job. Infact my engineer even said that he wishes more of the rappers that come to him would punch in sometimes because sometimes their work isn't as good. They sacrifice on the quality just to say that they did it in 1 take or just so they squeeze in as many songs as they could in the alloted time frame they have. As for me personally I've never been able to do 1 take because I'm such a perfectionist and focus too much on the smallest of details. If I pronounce something even slightly off I gotta redo it. I was not blessed with the ability to just go in 1 take and then everything still sounds immaculate. I gotta do a bunch of punches. 🤣 Let's just say my engineer is a super patient guy. 😅 By the way can't wait for the full episode. 🙌🏽

'Practice, practice, never re-enact this.' Jay Z's rhymes at 19 years old back when he was spitting fast. So when you slow it down it naturally becomes easier. He also stated how he had to compile rhymes on the go as he had no pen n paper whilst out and about. Essentially, if you put your mind to it, you'll see what you can come up with too. Perspective.. This is what Young Guru was explaining that flew over many heads. People forget Lil Wayne also inspired the spitting with no pen when he dropped, 'A Milli.' Especially down south.

What is the actual process of writing in your head? Is it hard? Is it better because you’re not reading it on paper and it sounds more naturally?

@@SoulOfTheSouth Nothing counts till you say it...be aware some things you write are not hot till you spit it and sometimes it looks better on paper than if you say it...just because it fits doesn't mean it makes sense in what you're sayin'...that's the hard part sometimes
@SoulOfTheSouth
@SoulOfTheSouth 2 года назад
@@durrtyjerzeeable Me being a MC myself, I always write on paper but it takes me weeks for me to write a verse depending on what it is but when I do write it down, I would memorize my verse before recording it. I use to record into the mic while reading my pad and I listen to my verse back and it sounded like I was reading my lines. Just by hearing the way I said my lyrics, it didn’t sound right to me. Reading from my pad throws me off. So what I started doing was memorizing my whole verse and I’ll record. When I played my verse back, it sound like it was more natural and my cadence was riding on the beat really well. Sometimes when Im at work or riding around, I would come up with dope lines on the fly. When I have a pen and pad in front of me, my mind is blank and I think too hard, which is weird to me.

The discussion was going good until they talked about recording in 1 line. The fact that they got amped up for Mecc saying he's impressed is dumb. Basically, he said "I'm impressed". He didn't say "You all need to be as impressed as I am". YET, Everyone in the room is mad because he's choosing to be impressed. It's understandable that in the final product, it doesn't matter if Jay did it in one take or if he was sitting on a bar stool while cleaning his ears out with a Q-tip while wearing micky mouse hat. IF Mecc says that impresses him, then it impresses him. Simple. People get impressed all the damn time that Jay composes his lyrics in his head...so the hell what. It's cool but people still think Nas is better, who is a heavy writer. BUT, if Jay impresses you, then cool, there are people that are there for that, let them enjoy that. It's like, we have to accept things that aren't worth accepting but then those same people get mad at people for liking things that aren't the common topics to speak about. That's super hypocritical.

Mecca derails conversations by going off on tangents. Who cares if you’re impressed or not? It’s about the music being dope or not. He’s focused on it being done in one take when the discussion was about doing dope music that HAPPENS to be done in one take by JayZ. If you never knew it was done in one take would you care? The song is still dope. Who cares if it was 100 takes?! Mecca derailed the conversation debating over takes.

It’s almost like movies as well they go to a vocal recording studio and record audio after shooting the footage which will then be engineered together. When we hatch films the audio we hear has been done separately no acting just the lines this enables them to be precise with emphasis and feeling etc for the final product to be it’s best when released to the rest of the world in stores for viewers and listeners who have no idea what goes on behind the creative side

We get (or have gotten) hung up on arbitrary stats and feats that don’t matter to the end product. One take vs. punching in, production hardware vs. software, using a mixing board vs. mixing with plug-ins. All things that 99% of music listeners couldn’t hold a 45 second convo with you about.

It definitely happens with everything Man. People tried to recreating ILLmatic, by getting a bunch of different super producers to do a bunch of different things and it never sounded cohesive like that. What they didn’t realize is all those guys were still collaborating on elevating NAS. It’s not just a bunch of different records that they picked off a Tape and slapped together.
