Before the sixties, bands and singers didn't usually write and perform their own songs. There were songwriters, and there were performing artists. The success of The Beatles (and others, such as Bob Dylan) changed all that. Three Dog Night wasn't a "cover band", they were just a holdover that was still following the old ways. During this time you also saw songwriters pivoting into singer/songwriter careers (think Carole King, Randy Newman, Harry Nillson, Neil Diamond) in order to stay relevant-not to mention employed.

While TDN covered other artists' songs, they always fought against ever being labeled a "cover band", because unlike other "cover/tribute bands", who try to faithfully recreate the original sound and thus stay in the past (which isn't a bad thing if that's what you'rel ooking for), TDN *always* made their own arrangements, putting their own unique spin on songs--and thereby took songs that may not have charted well in their original release and turned them into monster hits.

Love a bonus reaction day! I grew up with Three Dog Night on the radio all the time, to the point where I do take them for granted, this song in particular. It's great seeing A&A listen with fresh ears and appreciating the music!

FYI: For my money, I’d contend that the signature version of this song comes courtesy of Aimee Mann who recorded an incredible (and notably Beatle-esque) version of ‘One’ for the movie Magnolia.

I was in junior high school and working part-time in Rudy's Record Store when this record came out. It knocked my socks off. It has remained one of my very favorite recordings of all time.

Three Dog Night was the first concert that I went to in 1972. What a show. Lots of Hits. One of my favorites is Heavy Church.

“Eli’s Coming”, live in the 70s is a fun watch.

I listened to this in high school, but today I had headphones on. What a difference! The separation was amazing!

I was 12 and had no idea we were growing up in such an amazing time for music. All I knew was the radio and the 69 cent 45's at the record shop churned out new stuff week by week that was mesmerizing. I mowed lawns and turned in pop bottles at 2 cents each to buy them. I probably still have several hundred 45's in a case in the basement

This is quite possibly the greatest cover band of all time. Definitely check out Nilsson's version...it's tonally very different (more melancholy) but also amazing.

Eli's Coming...live. That's what should be your next Three Dog Night song. Three lead singers, all fantastic.

This song is an example of what makes them special: the ability to take someone else's song and do it better. Whoever is responsible for their arrangements is a genius.

I saw 3 Dog Night 3x in one day! They played Magic Mountain in So Cal in the 70’s That is exactly what sounded like live! Excellent band!

I was second row right up front to see them in the early 70’s. That was a great show. The guy that played The Wizard with them was Skip Conte. He and a friend did Ride, Captain, Ride while in Blues Image. It was only one of two acts that I snuck in a camera and got pictures.

Spending time with my favorite aunt and smoking a little marijuana and I saw Three Dog Night several times in my life first I was 10 years old and saw them at Johnson Gym here in Albuquerque and last time my brother's band Sassy Jones opened for them here in Albuquerque in my late 20s. As I said my Auntie was my musical influence other then my Dad. She loved Three Dog Night, Hendrix, Janis, CSNY, and so on. My favorite song from them is Chest Fever. When I sang in the Choir church the guy that played the organ would play this song before mass started and the priest. Several great songs Eli's Coming, Try a little tenderness, feeling alright, Heaven is in your mind, Out in the Country, Easy to be Hard and Must let the show go on are just a few. Massive Voices Amazing Band. Enjoy!
