Theses trees grow all over ohio/west virginia. I used to skip my first few classes all the time to go into the nearby woods to pick them in September-November. Id come to school later in the day with my book bag FULL of these fruits, I always shared with my teachers😂

If you’re into finding paw paws in the wild, look at the bottom of ravines. They tend to be right where the land starts to rise, where their feet can be wet if they want. The best ones will be at the forest edge, again usually at the top of a ravine. Paw paws love land with texture. Also, they tend to spread more as clones from rhizomes so if you find one, you’ll likely find a lot more right nearby and they’re all basically the same individual like birches.

thatpat1 For those without imagination or experience, cleared land tends to be flat, at least in the Mid-Atlantic. At least it tends to be the flattest land available. Severe ravines, WHERE PAW PAWS LIKE TO BE, tend to be left wooded. Farmers, because they’re greedy (j/k), like to clear flat land all the way to the edge of ravines, or the TOP of them. That is where you’ll find the most productive paw paws because they’ll have all the things they truly love, water, sunlight and protection from the wind. Not the most of anything, but the most they can get of each without losing too much of the others. So it’s not the top of all ravines, but where they meet the forests edge. Clear enough?

Wild Paw Paws grow along the slopes of ravines in from top to bottom. They like the dappled shade & the water flowing down the sides & a moist micro climate. The grow very tall, slender & are easy to miss. Look up & look for leaf shape against the sky.

I have read on a few places that state that if you plant one of a certain cultivar, you must have another of a different cultivar completely in order for it to fruit. You do not agree?

We planted a couple paw paw trees here in Michigan where we camp. I finally found some fruits to try couple years ago at a farmers market from wild foragers they were also selling mushrooms. Yum. Hoping ours do well. I will be getting more to plant for my new house.

One of my favorite memories is being with my dear grandfather on a pawpaw picking expedition. I couldn't have been more than 6 or 7 years old ( so, early 1960's??). He taught me the "picking up pawpaws, putting em in the basket" song. It was especially funny to us because we kids called our grandfather PawPaw.

We had huge patches of these in our woods. I never knew the fruits were yummy. Wish I had tried em before we moved away:( the more I get into agriculture the more I remember from that property that was real gems I had no clue I had. So sad.

nail a coffee can to a long pole like bamboo to scoop from underneath the fruit on high branches. We use this for apples all the time.

Passiflora incarnata, maypop, a type of passionfruit is native to some of this region, too. A little different from P. edulis, but still like another tropical fruit native to here.

OH yeah, the Van Buren county conservation district sells the trees at their sales. I've gotten from Fennville before and I've heard they grow a little further north in some patches/groves.

My first experience with the pawpaw was on a creek Bank in alabama, when I found one it was half eaten but I picked it up and when I smelled it I had to taste it not even knowing if it was poisonous or not it was completely full of seeds but the taste was amazing I took pictures and done my homework then discovered what it was I found now I look for them every year

There is a nickname for the fruit that refers to a certain bodily fluid. Many people find the smell and flavor offensive. It's nowhere near as bad as durian, however. Personally I think they smell like a mix of guava and banana, but they can be a little "funky". I would love to try one of the named varieties with improved size and taste. I just shake the (wild) trees, and ripe ones will fall. If they don't fall off, they're not ripe enough. I like to freeze the pulp in ice cube trays and add to yogurt or oatmeal.

I’m in San Antonio Texas do they tolerate our scorching sun and heat ? I bought two they are about 1 1/2 ft tall they were expensive and I’m debating on where to successfully plant them without having the sun kill them and the cold climate kill them during winter. What’s your advise

I have 3 pawpaw trees in my yard , planted then 9 years ago from 2 ft tall seedlings that I bought from tytyga nursery online , they are now 15 ft high , we harvest tons of paw paw every summer , large and medium size fruits , best time to eat them is when they fall on the ground same day. Birds don’t mess with them , squirrels love them. Taste delicious, the trick u need to plant different trees so they cross pollinate , I heard farmers place dead animals or roadside kills close to the trees to attract flies to pollinate those trees , u can plant them in full sun but they like partial better

Did you order their grafted ones or the regular seedlings? I see they offer 2 grafted paw paw varieties and also the ones planted from seed (ungrafted). I'd buy some seeds if you would want to sell some. I have 8 acres so I have room to grow plenty. I'd like to plant them around my farm pond. I know they grow best along creeks with moisture but I wonder how they do if water stands on them for a month. My pond fluctuates a lot from 1 1/2 acre to a 1/4 acre. I'd like to get them as close as possible to water. It's really hot, dry and sandy here (Texas) so I need to get them as close to water as possible

I will send u the seeds for free I bough mine as seedlings, they did not look like grafted. So I guess they where grown from seeds. Mine are in partial sun shaded with big cypress trees for half of the day. Planted in hard clay but far away from water. I never had to water them or fertilize them. I live in Tennessee climate zone 7a. They grow in the wild here. You might not be able to grow them in warmer climate. I think they like cold humid climate.

@@muhamedfaour3710 I've been researching how to plant from seed from experts and they say the seeds won't hardly germinate if they dry out more than 3 days. They said they need to be kept moist at all times as soon as you remove them from the fruit, in a baggie with peat moss. I guess a wet paper towel would work. That's how I store my pecan graftwood each year for my pecan orchard. I would at least want to pay the shipping cost. My email is jamesbarron04@yahoo.com if you want to contact me. I have over 100 fruit and nut trees. I do all my own grafting. If I can get some seedling pawpaw trees growing maybe I can locate some improved variety graftwood to improve them. I never planted seeds before I remember eating one and throwing the seeds on front yard mulch then few month later I saw few seedlings growing. If the still there I will let you know. We had a harsh cold snap last month not sure what damage it did.

I absolutely love paw paws. My mom had a few, but cut them down - she doesn't like them, and it's her property, so....🤷‍♂ But now that I have my own place in central Indiana, I'll be getting a couple of trees from a place in KY called Peaceful Heritage Nursery. They have an incredible selection of high quality trees, but they sell out in a matter of hours, so you have to be QUICK! By the way, as far as I've heard/read, yes, you need more than one tree, but they need to be different varieties. So a Susquehanna and a Mango (variety), for example. Or Kentucky State University has a good program, from what I've seen on RU-vid. Anyway, I can't wait to have a mini paw paw orchard, and in the meantime, I'll be ordering some online, since I live in southern California. Paw Paws require around 400 chill hours, and well, we simply don't get those temperatures here.

I'm 66 and when I was a little girl I'd eat pawpaws from my grandmother's tree. She died when I was 5, and I haven't eaten one since then...61 yrs! Oh I loved them. That was in southwest Virginia. Hers grew in a shady area that was close to a stream, so the ground stayed moist. One note to mention, some people are highly allergic to pawpaws, so if you've never eaten one, be cautious and don't eat a whole one the first time. My sister breaks out in a "poison ivy" type rash just standing close to a pawpaw tree. I could eat all I wanted and never had an adverse reaction. My grandmother's were smaller than the one you had, and hers was brighter yellow fruit. So tasty!! I didn't know they were still around and will get some to plant!

My mother talked about eating pawpaw when she was a little girl in virginia near east coast. They also made little people and animals by sticking sticks in them. I'm 77. Always wanted to taste.

Great video John, I cant wait to get my hand on some seedlings in the spring and get some pawpaw trees growing up here in south western BC. Looks like there are some people already growing them nearby, I'm excited. And cant wait to hopefully try some like what you had. The only pawpaws I've tried were very tiny and kinda hard with only a little bit of flesh I could tell there was potential in them being great, cant wait to experience some higher quality ones and hopefully be growing my own too.

I have read that you must wait until they are slightly soft before picking them, sort of like peaches. Do not pick when they are hard.

Get more than one! We've had one for over ten years now & it's produced six or seven fruit. :( I've tried manual pollination with the luck of six or seven. LOL. We now have some more trees maturing so.... patience.

I currently have 2 pawpaws about 4 years old surviving in NE Ohio. I have been trying to grow them for the past 20 years ( I have planted about ten of them over the years, but between the cold, wet and people cutting them down by accident (slow growiing and easily overlooked, although in a few cases the person -- not me actually moved the marker before cutting the grass and then forgot... sheer stupidity). They are very slow growing and tend to die off in our cold winters. Mind you even the one that had lived the longest (about 15 years) only reached 3 -4 feet tall.

Yup they're easily damaged and don't store well commercially but if you find a small grower, you'll be set! You might be able to buy canned paw paw butter or other canned product that they can ship to you!

I fell in love with the Paw Paw a few years ago, and I have now three of them growing. Apparently I developed an allergy to them. Now I have a reaction even holding them : (. This is rare, but they can give some people a poison ivy type reaction. ....just worth mentioning

The "poison ivy" type poison (actually an allergan) is in and just under the skin. The same is true for mangos.

The first time I saw a paw paw here in Alabama I was waaaay back in the forest hunting. I smelled it before I saw it and somehow instinctively I knew what it was. A tiny little bush with 3 or 4 on it. That set me on fire so I purchased one from a tree seller in the middle of nowhere who made quite a handy living out of his tree trailer. That thing took YEARS to grow. It's about15 feet tall today and I learned what 'way down yonder in the paw paw patch' meant. Got those things sprouting all over the place. Unfortunately, neophyte I was I only purchased one so that tree has never produced a single one.

Get another one or look up how to either self pollinate them or something, I'm still learning but I have saved a ton of helpful paw paw videos in my garden playlist today, as I'm going to start some seeds this week, I'm pretty excited! @@speaklifegardenhomesteadpe8783 Super great to hear from you. Well, my problem is that I'm not young gardener. Those things take forever and a day to even bloom. They are slow and a half. If you have 10 or 15 years then you'll have those things sprouting everywhere like I do. Just wouldn't darn pay for me to get into the pawpaw biz any more. Back when I got mine there was no internet or information. None of that. IF I had have known, and the seller had of known, etc....but that's water under the bridge. You're doing the right thing by getting it right to start. No good way out in the future to learn you made a boo boo. Ha.

I used to live WV and found a couple trees by accident. I’d love to grow one at my home now. Any chance they’d survive in Colorado above 6000 ft?

Have you ever made anything with it like you have banana bread do you have you ever made bread with us or any desserts with it this is an awesome segment didn't know this type of fruit would work and different climates I'm south of the Canadian border MN you have a wonderful day hopefully you have more stuff like kind of like that that you can do and different climates

How well do they handle the winds of a strong Class 3 or greater Hurricane ? Hurricane Nicholas came through my neighborhood an old growth Pecans where snapping like twigs literally wiped out over a hundred in my County and that was a class 1 Hurricane !

There are cold hardy kiwi--they are much smaller around the size of a large grape. The skin is edible and very delicious.

I researched growing pawpaws thoroughly and found a man with the last name Peterson spent decades isolating the best eating varieties. We will be planting some in the spring on Joshua Zieba channel if you want to follow the journey. I did not like the native pawpaws from Michigan I came across. Definitely buying some Peterson Pawpaws soon from a local nursery. They help prevent cancer! Pennsylvania Gold is yellowish inside and delicious.

I’ve heard that one reason this tree was not popular is because they can stink. The flowers are supposed to smell bad, however they are bug resistant and can keep insects away from other fruit trees. You can make insect repellent for your fruit trees from the leaves. Mine are now two yrs old and about four feet tall. I’m anxious to see how long it takes to get fruit. They are pollinated by flies and similar bugs, not bees...The flower puts of some rotten meat smell to bring them in. The flower is very beautiful, big, and unique!

Thats not true at least it doesn't stink to humans unless you put your nose directly in a flower and still doesn't smell like meat.

I've heard 3-7 years. Worth the wait! Just need more than one, plant several in a patch... A paw paw patch! 😅🌿🌱🥭🌱🌿 You need a male and female or a way to pollinate... I'm not positive yet, I'm still learning!

I have w 4 month old pawpaw tree that is over 4 foot now and I just planted it in to ground a week ago. If that pawpaw is 2 year old then, you need better soil.

Can you 'dwarf' your Paw Paw plants for a smaller growing area and how? I live in a constantly cool (50 to 70 degrees F.) climate VERY close to the Pacific Ocean in Half Moon Bay, California. Sounds ideal, hmmm? Where can I get seeds or seedlings nearby, if you know? Sounds like a few coffee grounds in my soil mix might be desirable? Thanks!!!

When I lived in Belize for a few years, someone brought buy a bread fruit for us to try. It looked similar to the paw paw, with the same seed looking thing in it. Anyway, I think this one might have been over ripe because it tasted like throw up. So when I see that kind of fruit, my stomach starts to tighten up.:(

lapetitemoma that was probably paw paw. It does smell like “throw up” as you so succinctly put it haha, but it tastes good. Lots of people won’t try it because it smells, but I remember the days when I wouldn’t eat Parmesan cheese because it was stinky. Now I love it

I live in Central Florida 🌴☀️ and this I have to try to grow from its fruit..first I’ll eat it 😂 I’ve never eaten one..wow I have 2 large mango 🥭 trees growing in my earth box..on lanai.. Plus 6-2-3” mini peppers 🌶 plants 🌱..from ones I bought..Forget buying seeds..I like fresh seeds . My favorite munchie veggie..or is it a fruit🤔

Oooh... Good question! Why not try! Couldn't hurt getting a pack of stratified seeds and trying a patch outside natural and a few inside or something. That would be a cool experiment! I'm getting ready to start a bunch of seeds so I added a ton of paw paw videos in my garden playlist, that might help you research and don't forget their taproot... Many people are starting them in short seed starter tray things, but one lady in my playlist shows the taproot on her seedlings which were barely starting to grow... Yet their root was over a foot deep already! God bless!

Yes. They grow well in Missouri. I picked wild PawPaws in wet ravines that emptied into the Mississippi when I was a kid north of St. Louis, MO. More like I stood there while my father shook the tree & I scrambled down the ravine chasing them.

It is true that pawpaws will grow from subtropical areas in Florida and Mexico all the way up to S Canada but you should never plant the subtropical proveniences in cold climate or vice versa. Try to find a variety suited for your particular climate then you will be blessed with a good fruit harvest
