I disagree with this interpretation a bit. Considering how Finn Sword comes from a time loop with multiple results, it's fair to say Fern *is* Finn, rather then just a copy of him. He went through every adventure up to that point, but then he and his Jake get effectively "split" into two each, so Jake can spend eternity dreaming Prismo, and he has to deal with the other him treating him as an object and taking their identity all for himself. Also, by the show's logic, he's never really Grass Sword, as the grass demon inside his mind, who is the sword, is depicted as mentally separate from him. It's certainly the most tragic story in the show.

I was about to comment the exact same thing, PB said herself that he isn’t just a copy or an alternate reality version of Finn, He Is Finn. The way I see it, Fern is just Finn in a timeline where things started going wrong in his life. The show even acknowledges this with the Rock Paper Scissors game that he kept playing with Finn, they played dozens of times and the result was always a tie, then at one critical point Finn won and Fern lost. It just kind of shows that Finn wasn’t just some inborn hero by nature, he became a hero because he had the luck and support of his friends that helped him there, without it he could have easily become self righteous jerk.
But Fern IS Fin. The show goes into great detail to show this. He is fin from an alternate timeline that got turned into a Fin sward and then was taken over by a grass curse that turned him into Fern. Still Fin, but in a different body and cured. Thought that was obvious. His is an EVEN MORE TRAUMATIZED FIN with no Jake or BMO or life of his own at all. It drove him crazy. Being used as an object for so long and then cursed into being Fern? I’m not sure anyone would turn out good in his shoes. He was a fucked up kid that made BAD decisions.
