In this video I take a minute to chat about a very interesting and notable difference we have noticed at one of our bee yards.

Maybe you are getting more moisture helping the plants grow(>?) Just a guess. Exciting that you have a yard booming!

Brett nice video update.I'm seeing the same thing here in North East Wisconsin.Brood boxes are just packed.I did add a honey super with a queen excluder 2wks ago but nothing being drawn out yet.This past weekend I removed the excluder and will recheck this weekend.Would you have any ideas to why.For now everything is going very well.Made another queen less splits and their doing fine.I'm small time with only 4 hives and running out of boxes.Thank you so much for all the advice that help us small time guys.

If they aren't moving into the new box it's probably because there isn't enough nectar flowing to warrant such a jump. I'd just keep that box on there and keep an eye on the brood nest to make sure they aren't backfilling. They'll get to that upper box when it's advantageous.

Thanks for the video!!! I’ve noticed the same thing going on in my bed yard. My bees are way ahead of last years yield, even the two hives that struggled last year. I live down in southern Colorado and we’ve had a very wet spring so I just chocked it up to more plants in bloom. I’d be interested to know if you’ve had the same weather there.

I haven't payed attention to the differences in weather for our yards... We have had a pretty regular rain since April, so everything is green and lush, so much so that I'd expect all of our yards to be booming. There's something different about this one yard though, and I don't think I can attribute it to rain.

I appreciate your videos! Have you done one regarding dearth? How do you know, or anticipate a dearth- and, what do you do about it? I realize ever area is different…. Thanks again for your vids

Thanks David! No, I haven't done a video on dearths, but I should, thank you for the tip. Honestly, here in Michigan, without drought, there really isn't a set dearth time, except for maybe the mid July until goldenrod. The dearths that we experience, rather than regular, are usually caused by drought, those are pretty obvious because the grass will die and you'll be hoping for rain. After a while, I think something like 4 or 5 years for me in the lower peninsula (this is my first year in the UP), you'll become really aware of what's blooming and what to expect in the near future. In the lower peninsula we always had dandelions in early April, followed by fruit trees and then sumac in late May early June. Then the hardwoods would bloom, poplars and basswoods toward the end of June/early July, followed by milkweed and a bunch of other wildflowers. Then we'd hit a dearth (the one I mentioned) until goldenrod started toward the end of August, early September. To tell in your hives, just check the frames, the outside ring around the brood nest will be wet, the frames will be getting fatter, there will be more wet burr comb connecting everything when the nectar is flowing. When it's not, all of those cells that contained that wet nectar will start to dry out. I'll certainly make a video on this subject. Stay tuned for that.

Have you been seeing much white clover yet? Usually this time of year the clover is everywhere, not so much this season.
@BKBees
@BKBees 3 года назад
Yeah there is tons of clover in a couple of hay fields we have bees in. I honestly don't know if it's more or less than usual, since we're new to the UP.

It is impressive the difference Resources available between yards. I have one yard near a county parks and a river valley and the other is in the middle of corn fields. You would be surprised if I told you which one brings in the most honey……
@rstlr01
@rstlr01 3 года назад
@@minpin8257 the 4 Cornfield hives already produced four supers of honey this year and two of them are packages. The six house hives just got their second supers. They are about 22 miles apart. Cornfield hives are exclusively “saskatraz” house hives are VSH Italian/Carniolan hybrid. Soybean flow will happen here in a couple weeks so probably gonna have to clear some frames out before that happens. As to why The hive surrounded by monoculture crops are doing so well I have no idea. It’s my first year at this location.

Yeah, corn fields are known to beeks as bad spots, but I've never had a problem with a nearby field. Some of the best yards we've had were right across the street from a corn or soy bean field. I don't have any of that near me up here though.

Great video yet again. I have a question I need a technic for adding bees to a very weak hive problem is they reinforcements will be coming from a difference style of hive so can't just put a frame in. I thought maybe shake nurse bees into a box and spray them sugar water then tip them into the weak hive.. Any ideas?
@BKBees
@BKBees 3 года назад
I'd just shake 'em right on the hive. No need for the extra box and sugar water. Open your weak hive, open your strong hive, bring over a frame or 3 and just shake 'em right on top of the frames. Make sure you don't shake the queen. The foragers will get up and return to the old hive almost immediately, the nurse bees will go down between the frames and start to do the same work they were doing in the old hive. Easy peasy.

@@BKBees Ah okay I thought there would be a war and was worried the queen would be targeted.
