When you wait only for one RU-vidr because he is just awesome: script, editing, background music, attention to detail, authenticity....and the list goes on! We appreciate you, Michael.
Open Canvas is by far the best implementation of multitasking yet. It's far more intuitive and is much suited for foldables and touch screen than even iPad OS. I hope this can be implemented in their tablets too cause it just make sense.
as interesting as it looks to me, as a fold user, I don't love that there isn't 'also' an option to have 3 apps all on screen at once without shifting. I would love this option, but I do personally need 3 concurrently available at least once a week for some tasks. Would be willing to give it a try tho
I'd like to see this "OPEN CANVAS" come to tablets as well. It's such a smart approach, that may not be 100% there right now, but I just can't see how this isn't the thing everyone else apes for their next foldable updates and devices.
It reminds me of the way you can swipe between desktops in OSX and Gnome-linux. If they added that ability to foldables, that would be incredibly powerful
Me too. I remember seeing concept videos in 2009 from UI design firms about having multiple programs of various widths, side by side in a long ribbon you could move between. It's taken a while but we're hopefully finally approaching it becoming a mature UX paradigm. As Milk says some multiple-desktop implementations have had a similar feel for a while, but that kinda forces you to do everything in full-screen apps or manually tile your windows. I do think floating windows is not the best approach on a touch screen, but the fact this supports multiple widths is huge imo. Not every app needs to be full screen. But a single width for a column mode doesn't always work either. Having as many side by side as can work depending on the app is an obvious step. And getting it working without a bunch of setup before-hand is key.
I hope this starts a price war among the manufacturers and we can start seeing foldable reach the 1,200 dollar price range within the next couple of years. Or even hopefully sub 1,000 dollar versions. I mean we're already seeing it with Motorola razor 2023.
As much as I love viewing the opinions of other tech tubers, I consider MrMobile is THE authoritative figure when it comes to foldables. His evangelism of the platform gave me the confidence of getting my own foldable, the Fold 5. I have never been happier with a phone, and I will find it hard to move back to the old candy bar design.
I just got my z fold 5 last month. I'm really bummed I missed the one plus fold by so little time, but my last phone was totally broken and i didn't have a choice but to replace it right away. I will be looking to switch off Samsung for the wider outer screen maybe by next year though!
@@TheMrMobileI agree completely, it's a fantastic phone, great software, and fantastic build quality as well, I have a RAZR plus as well, as like your good self, I love folding phones
Man, this might be the first android phone to pull me away from Samsung. I've been a fold user since the fold 2 but am about 85% sure I'm going to trade it in for a preorder of the Open. The regular sized front screen is enough for me, but the lightweight, brighter screen, faster charging (I don't use wireless charging much) and larger inner screen. Some of the foldable software looks really cool, too. Great vid.
I agree. I've had the Fold 2, Fold 3 and Fold 4. Have skipped the 5 and traded in for an S22 Ultra because all my Fold screens broke. I have been waiting for someone else to come along (with EU/UK availability) with a foldable phone with a proper front screen, decent multitasking and at least passable software. My OnePlus Open is ordered and I'm finally leaving Samsung.
@@BakrAli10 unfortunately not user error, I treat my phones extremely well. The first two developed small cracks down the fold. First it was just the screen protector, but after I removed it, on the screen itself. My wife had the same with her Flip 3. The third one failed completely down the fold - black fluid down the middle, also physical damage internally that could be felt under the display. 100% not my fault, spontaneous catastrophic failure. All replaced under warranty. And every time Samsung would send it away for a week or more, and wipe everything. Incredibly frustrating. I love foldables but moved back to a slab for this reason. Highly unreliable. I don't know if the OP will be better, but I'm prepared to try it because the outer screen is so much better than the Fold. But this time I'll keep my S22 Ultra as a backup in case it breaks. OPs repair process won't be any quicker from what I've read.
@@adskee69 sorry for your experience. Have ZF3 since its release and no issue at all. The only thing I had to do is replace the internal screen protector once as it was peeling off which is $20. Even none of my folks rocking F3 o F4 have any issues.
The last point on Samsung being complacent is something I definitely agree with. I *know* that they're capable of a lot more than this so hopefully we'll see something more exciting from them soon.
I've got to ask....how's "Wireless Charging" actually "wireless"?? Your phone needs to be on the platform for it to charge..at this point, it sounds like the only benefit that it serves is that you don't have to through the horrid experience of having plug in your phones. Fast charging is in fact more important than "wireless " charging....
As a person who had the first generation find n until a few weeks ago, I'm incredibly excited for this device. It was difficult to get a hold of the find n, but I absolutely loved it and only ended up getting rid of it because my routine changed in a way that made the China specific software quirks annoying to deal with. To see that the design of the device is gorgeous, the cameras work just as well as I loved on my find n, and all of my favorite parts about the software are carried over, but with the more annoying parts removed, I am absolutely going to save up for it. It's literally the perfect device for me, even in hardware since I don't really care about wireless charging (I don't know why but even on devices I have that supported. I prefer to use wired charging). An additional note, I used it that entire time as a heavy user, and a rhythm gamer who is hard on my devices' screens, with no case on the device, and the only damage to it was some scratches on the back that were fairly deep because I used the phone in a ceramics class and ended up scratching the back glass with fired ceramic by accident. The hinge is no joke, holds its own really well and prevents the inner screen cracking since it's a tear drop, not a crease.
This was the video I’d been waiting for. The king of the foldable phone world. Did not disappoint, looking forward to seeing what it’s like to live with compared to the Fold
Thank you for taking your time, not just to be accurate in your review, but for such a great production of your reviews. You've become my go to authority on foldables and continue to put out fun and accurate information
The OnePlus Open is $1700 for 16GB RAM and 512GB storage. The Pixel Fold and Galaxy Z Fold 5 start at $1800 for 12GB RAM and 256GB storage. So not only is it $100 cheaper, it comes with more RAM and double the storage.
Great review as usual. One additional observation about the lack of wireless charging. When I sold my Oppo Find N2, I was pissed that Swappa knocked my phone out of the pristine category simply because the usb c port showed normal use micro scratches. A small detail, but one that could cost you a few hundred bucks if you resale after a year or so like I do.
I can see it being common to only wirelessly charge for the resale value in the future. Which is an ironic price incentive, since the extra heat from wireless charging definitely stresses the battery and circuitry more than a few tiny scuffs around a charge port. But as you say, it's all about the cosmetics.
On the photo at 10:19 inside the restaurant, there is a MASSIVE image quality improvement of the OnePlus over the other two phones when you look at the ceiling's suspended lamps and the way the highlights were perfectly recovered, and are not blown out unlike the other two phones. Also, the natural bokeh is much better and the overall image much more film like without over contrast or sharpening.
I used to not think much about wireless charging, but now that a lot of cars support it, I think it is a should or must have. Jumping in your car and plopping your phone down when you are in a hurry is just too convenient
I really dont care about wireless charging. I got my dad a 14 pro max and showed him wireless charging. He seemed impressed for a few minutes, then just plugged in the wire. Its not a deal breaker for most people.
I'm due for an upgrade on my Flip4, which is now damaged unfortunately. (Manufacturers issue I'm trying to get fixed.) I still have no idea what to choose. But your videos helped me decide on the Flip4 a year ago, because of how concise and informative they are. I'm planning on getting some hands-on time with my considerations, but I am 50/50 on a flips or folds at the moment. Both have pros and cons. After my Flip4 though there's no way I can go back to a regular phone. Foldables are the future and I love them.
I do not see why people like wireless charging, the benefits of wireless are usually due to not being tethered. Don't wanna plug in a laptop to Ethernet and stay close to a wall? Well wifi let's you go anywhere in the house and still have a connection. Couch a little farther away from your GameCube? Get a wavebird controller and sit back in comfort. Wireless charging however makes your phone have to sit in one place for the whole night and I'm pretty sure all of you reading this likes to use their phone in the middle of the night. When my phone is plugged in, I can open it up, use it, and just toss it to the side of my bed. Wired charging actually means you're less tethered to one spot

As a Fold 5 user, I want that multitasking canvas. And not just for my phone. I want it for my iPad and PC. How come no one has done this before? It looks so good and intuitive.
This is definitely my all-around favorite foldable as of right now. I got the OnePlus tablet and I'm enjoying the crap out of this thing. I'd much prefer to use it over my Galaxy tab S8 Pro and really enjoy how you do the split screen I just sliding your two fingers down the middle
Still the best phone reviewer on youtube. Covers ALL the aspects while the others only talk about the design and the cameras. Thank you, for being awesome, Mr. Fisher !
Good job as always Michael. I pulled the trigger on the One plus Open and got $270 off as well as an additional $60 off in deals. i got their tablet for $347 along with the free buds and 100 watt charger all for $2030. Not a bad deal. I have to wait until the 27th, but that works. I look forward to it. Keep up the great work.
@@GrupoSentenciadeWKGN, It should work with, at least, T Mobile, AT&T, and Verizon. I don't know about the others, but I would be surprised if it didn't work with Mint and some of the other smaller MVNOs as well. T Mobile for sure though as that is what I have.
Bro This is how a review from tech should be. Fun, light hearted but to the point. Im from Hampton Roads. Proud of you bro!! Ever in the area. Let me know im a film maker. Thanks!
Michael, I bought the OPPO find N 2 based on your review and just pre ordered the Oneplus open for my wife's birthday. Thank you for the awesome videos!
Not a good sign that review units' screens are already breaking. The early adoption risks have always been there. Ver 2.0 of this device will have my interest if Fold 6 doesn't have a built in S Pen silo. Thank you One+ for the added competition.
Have been busy building this review for several days straight, so haven't seen other coverage. Shame to hear about that. Just MKBHD though so far, right?
You realize this is every folding phone? The Fold V had the same issues and every Samsung fold has had blackening down the middle. Half of the people I sold them too at my last job always came to do an early upgrade or to do a warranty claim. Heck had a customer whose screen that blackened after 1 week after getting it and Samsung told them to get lost. Felt bad for the guy for an $1,800 dead weight.
This has happened on a much larger scale for the Galaxy Folds and is a major issue. I saw that one reviewer had two Galaxy Folds and both had to be returned. There will be issues as foldable are still risky.
@@TheMrMobilefingers crossed that MKBHD'S screen issue was an outlier defect unit! I'm really hopeful on the open as it's the first phone that has excited me from one plus in over 4 years since the 7 pro.
I really like Samsung multitasking already but this implementation looks amazing. It does look like it requires some getting used to but makes me like it even more.
Anything new that you've never tried before requires getting used to. That's how you learn and build muscle memory. Therefore, that's a weak argument for anyone hesitating to buy the OnePlus Open just because of it having additional OPTIONAL multitasking features.
The problem with the trade in is it takes away your backup plan for if and when the foldable breaks. It feels like trading in your water bottle for a single use pop can. Sure the pop is more exciting, but water is safe
Yes, I am like you. I keep my old phone as a backup that I stick a data card in and use for satnav and music. If I have a breakage, like when I broke my Pixel 7 Pro display, then I have a secondary device to jump to.
I'm in the tech minority but I have a really old phone that doesn't work that I'm trading in for the $200, then I'm selling my current phone (P7) on eBay, and I still have my P2 in case anything goes wrong. So if you have 3 old phones this works well in your favor ;)
Man Michael, you hit the spot every time. My Tony Stark under the phone reviewers. Your style, opinion, so honest. Love the quality! Keep it up and keep taking your time for your reviews.
I hope the Open also launches in Canada. Here, you Americans are super lucky. We have only ONE large-format foldable: the Z Fold. While with flips, we have only the RAZR and the Z Flip. Google just said “Canada isn’t interested” and skipped out (typical of them). Though it’d probably be a 2000 Canadian dollar device so… As for the device itself, if my opener wasn’t an indicator, I really want one. If this phone does well, Samsung and Google will have to pick it up, and Samsung will have to actually try for once (after a good 3 years of The Apple Approach). Open Canvas makes iPadOS’ Stage Manager look underpowered now too, really hoping more companies adopt the concept😅
I have a OnePlus 7pro since 1'st week was launched in shops. I have absolutely ZERO reasons to upgrade...... Is still a rocket! And value for money is unbeatable..... 😂😂😂💪
Great review! I like the outside look of the open. That crease on foldables still drives me crazy. I know that is just a given for foldables, but if I'm paying almost $2K for a phone I don't want a ravine running through the screen. This is even weirder because I loved the surface Duo series. The two separate screens didn't bother me, but a single screen with a crease does. I know it doesn't make sense.
An underrated thing about MrMobile's videos is his audio quality and sound production. Other big Tech reviewers don't seem to edit their audio or care about headphone/earphone users lol, the S sounds and plosives are often really bad. But MrMobile has clean and balanced audio 🙏🏿.
I can never get over how apparent the effort is in these videos. If television was cool, this would be high enough quality to have its own consumer reports segment
I pulled the trigger on one but very skeptical it can replace my 1tb fold 5. Other than the outer screen im not overly hopeful lol. Was waiting for your video to drop since you are the formost expert of all things foldable!
when it comes to phones i always wait for your opinion. it always feels well formulated, unique, and not influenced by company payments. you do a great job!
It's so interesting how so many Tech RU-vidrs just fall back on 75% of their video’s length be about the tech specs of a given device, or the marketing names given from the device manufacture, meanwhile MrMobile here is scriptwriting thought-provoking and delightfully witty commentary that makes you feel like you yourself held and used the device. Your dedication and motivation for informing the public on devices we should have in the headspace of the average tech purchaser, is un-matched. Not many people are like you Michael. Hoping you reach the 10 Million Subscribers you rightfully deserve!!!
In my opinion wireless charging is one of those things that you can only appreciate once you use it. I've been seeing fisher complaint about it for years and I myself have never cared about it, but this year I bought myself a pixel 7 pro and bought a wireless charger only to buy 2 more. It's to the point that I rarely plug my phone to charge due to my lifestyle. I work as an IT technician during the day, I charge my phone on my wireless charging dock at work and due to the nature of my job I get up pick my phone go work and when I'm back I'll just put it on the dock again without having to plug and unplug, same for my desk at home or my kitchen. The convenience of having my phone propped up and not having to plug and unplug everytime I do something is priceless for me.
With the fast charging of 80 watts on the OnePlus, you only need to charge once at most for maybe 15 minutes to top up nearly 50%! It is much more efficient and saves the hassle of spending extra on wireless chargers. Also, with Qi 2.0 coming soon, you will have to replace all your wireless chargers to make use of that new standard.
Yep, I used to be a wireless charging skeptic. Now I won't buy a phone if it doesn't have it. Lol. I definitely would have purchased the Open of it had wireless charging. But since it doesn't, it's a no go for me. Especially at that price.
@@andyH_England dude he's talking about people who already have wireless chargers not going out to buy wireless charging. Even though fast charging is great it is more harmful to the battery than wireless charging. Also qi 2 won't mean than existing qi charges will stop working lol
I love this channel. Found it yesterday while doom scrolling flip 6 videos, since i got one a few weeks ago and really like it. Keep doing what you're amazing at, i enjoy it very much!
correction: the oneplus open actually works wiith the oppo pen, for both outside and inner screen which is actually a step above the s-pen. unfortunately they dont market it or sell the pen through oneplus
The bath clip at 2:45 really was the best at what Mr. Mobile does.. I’m sure he looked at every angle, every element of that wash.. and the background music throughout the video got me dancing a bit.. totally made me forget what phone he was reviewing 😅
Almost everyone was saying wireless charging is not needed, on reddit everyone feels wireless charging is trash, but you said it right. We can have both. Thanks.
This phone looks amazing. I might even be tempted to upgrade to it and get my first fold. I also got a smile out of the “Jean-Luc Picard” call Easter egg. Cheers, Ian.
This is the one tablet style foldable I would consider (besides the OPPO equivalent). I generally prefer the flip style phones but that multitasking interface is just so well thought out
The review I have been waiting for as you are a foldable user. This is the OnePlus device I've been waiting for. The camera is impressive in your review and you covered all the key points. Aftercare support and service like you said is the only issue for me especially with a foldable. Samsung has got this part right with experience centres which do repairs in-house and sometimes on the same day. If OnePlus has a good system fir this then I'll consider it for my next upgrade. I just hope they bring the black colour to the UK soon.
Yesterday I received my Pixel Fold and been absolutely loving it, especially with GrapheneOS. Modern phone plus privacy respecting software? Yes, please.
I do love the phone but I have S23U right now so I'm going to wait for gen2 for this fold for me to change. Shoutout to their trade in value at launch, it's one of the best I've seen.
The trade in value is what is enticing me to switch my s23 ultra to get this phone. The durability is my major concern though as I've never owned a foldable before.
Ive had a smartphone since the launch of the HTC G1 on T mobile and the only phones ive ever had the charging port fail on me was the OnePlus 6t and then the OnePlus 7 pro. After that i have no intention of going back to OnePlus. OnePlus was once a beautiful idea of bringing a highly spec'd device at an insanely competitive price, and CyanogenOS was the icing on the cake. It was such an exciting time but sadly that time, as well as my time with OnePlus devices, have passed.
most likely i'm going to get into foldable with samsung mostly due to past experience with fixing oneplus devices was disaster. But I'm just happy that this device exist at all now i can except market moving forward to make a better product due to competition
Really glad to see foldables getting better and better. Now, if only the price could keep dropping as well :P Awesome vid as always! My favourite reviewer
I gotta say that this MrMobile review of OnePlus' first foldable was a great one! Oh, and it's really nice to know that some of the other tech bloggers are featured in this awesome video review!
All these lovely photos makes me miss when i traveled more for work and worked in a city instead of a desk job in a suburb. The last couple years the camera went from a HUGE decision for me to just another thing that's "kinda neat" and that makes me sad.
