And now for something completely different.
I've always had a thing for MIDI files and collected these as well as their playback systems since I was a child (yeah, I was weird even back then). And recently I thought about taking one file and letting it play by as many tone generators as I could find. I got 21. Some of them were not recorded by me. Their respective "authors" are noted in the list.
What the average computer user doesn't know is that MIDI files only contain information about what's being played and not how the result actually sounds. And this video demonstrates this very well.
Why onestop.mid? Because it's pretty known being part of Windows since... XP I guess? And it shares a nice variety of styles and instruments. The composer is David Yackley.
The following synthesizers, sound cards, keyboards, phones and software instruments were used:
Hardware tone generators:
- Casio WK-1630 (by RU-vidr osxdude)
- Korg NX5R (by Adam Andersen)
- Korg X5D
- Roland JV-1080
- Roland SC-55 (by Adam Andersen)
- Yamaha MOX8 (by RU-vidr tata42215)
- Yamaha QY100
- Yamaha S80 (with JayB's GM bank)
- Yamaha S90 ES
Sound cards and sound chips:
- Creative Audigy (Soundfont synth, similar to AWE32)
- Creative Audigy 2 ZS (Soundfont synth)
- Creative SoundBlaster 16 (a.k.a. Yamaha OPL3) (by RU-vidr Sudos)
- Gravis Ultrasound (by RU-vidr LetsPlayDOS)
- Sony Ericsson T715 mobile phone
Software synthesizers (VST or standalone):
- Edirol HyperCanvas
- Edirol Virtual Sound Canvas (a.k.a. Microsoft GS Wavetable synth)
- Native Instruments Bandstand
- Seersystems SurReal
- Wingroove
- Yamaha S-YXG50
- Yamaha S-YXG2006LE (as part of the MidRadio player software)
The pictures are mostly from Google image search, some of them are from me as well.

Interesting. =3 I know that no two tone generators sound alike, as your video demonstrated. I admit, what makes MIDI music unique is that it's dependent on the current device it's played on. Each device has its own interpretation of the song that it plays.

@SianaGearz
@SianaGearz Год назад
@@tanto64 You're not wrong. While they go about it in somewhat different ways and have different quirks and capabilities, both use Yamaha FM (Frequency Modulation) synthesis chips. It's OPL3 on SB16 and most PC soundcards of the mid 90s, and OPN2 on the Megadrive/Genesis. The chips are from vaguely the same era as well, having been introduced in late 80s. These chips do not require storage of large or complex waveforms, instead the instruments are synthesized from sine wave partials called Operators (only 2-operator instruments are generally used on PC, even though it's capable of 4-operator as well; both 2- and 4-operator are used on Megadrive), and these partials are combined by letting one twist the playback phase of the other, slightly stretching or staunching its waveform, giving it more of a full bodied sound than a thin and hollow sounding sine wave. Operators each have an envelope generator, letting their parameters change with time (attack, decay, sustain, release speeds), letting the sound evolve as it's held. This way a whole instrument is described by a mere handful of synthesis parameters. In the 80s, it was common to encounter 6-operator Yamaha FM instruments in pop music. These sound very rich and beautiful. While the low cost soundchips like OPL and OPN don't sound nearly as nice, they retain a lot of the fundamental character of these instruments.

There were a few I really loved! The one I really loved the most was Gravis Ultrasound, the next was the Roland JV-1080. I like the Roland because of how real it sounds and all the rich bass coming from it. Another good one was the Yamaha MOX8. The drums were pretty cool on it. The Creative SoundBlaster 16 had a good classic MIDI sound to it that most people love. The Wingroove had good reverb to it. Although, I loved the UltraSound the most because of the old sound it had to it. It sounded very 1999-2000ish that I like. Although the UltraSound is from 1995.

Any info on what specific soundfonts were loaded into the Audigys' ? The default 2MB Ensoniq bank? ;-)

I took those that came with the official drivers. So I guess it's the Ensoniq ones?

JayB Should be so. Creative Labs cards supporting soundfonts came with a set of 3 ages-old GM banks (2MB, 4MB and 8MB), and the 2MB one was set as the default.

How did you get a hold of all of these? Namely Bandstand and the Sony Ericsson.

Sometimes it's hard for me to throw things away. That mainly applies to the Sony Ericsson phone though. It was my own phone. As to Bandstand, years ago I downloaded a questionable version of it to try it. Never really used it though since it didn't really convince me.

JayB I remember seeing a video of a sort of "spiritual successor" to bandstand recently when I was looking for it. Sounded far better for sure.
