As I continue covering topic in my Beginner Tips series, note that this topic comes at the request of a viewer. Riding uphill can be intimidating if you feel the board struggling to keep you upright. This is normal, and it's important to realize that for many rider, the Onewheel doesn't exactly "crush hills" like you made have been led to believe. And so, developing confidence and familiarity with inclines is an important step in becoming fluent with street riding in various locations.
KEEP IN MIND that it is possible to approach a hill TOO SLOWLY. Moderate speed is most desirable in this instance, and it's important to be measured in your acceleration. Many riders nosedive when going uphill, so it's important to take the time to learn to avoid that.
Rememeber, the Onewheel in inherently dangerous. It's a one-wheeled skateboard. So practicing safety maneuvers itself presents risk and you should protect yourself at all times should you choose to ride and practice.

Slow “carving” and making sure not to lean forward are definitely important to conquering big hills. Another tip I’d add is to practice balancing! There were a few hills on my commute I couldn’t make it up before, however after using a balance board for some time and getting better at it, I’ve found I can go faster and up steeper hills, presumably this puts less stress on the motor. Also It makes sense to me that the pint has more torque since it has a smaller tire, however I ride a stock Vega on my xr and it can go up much steeper hills than I can on my pint with the stock unili.
@johnd9357
@johnd9357 3 года назад
I really don’t feel more torque on the pint. The opposite actually. Not sure why everyone says the XR has less torque. For me it has both more torque and of course more speed.

Transition to the hill is one of the most dangerous moves on a OW. Even slow speed, it’s super easy to dig the nose, and go over the falls. Of my three trips over, (all in the first weeks), all three have involved a transition to an uphill segment. Two on trails, and one at the end of my driveway that ended up breaking a rib (landed on my front side arm).

Great vid, and some good hill techniques. 👍⛰ I agree with your points on tire sizes affecting speed and torque. But, I noticed there wasn't any change going from stock Vega to Burris 6inch treaded TX33. I just turned my 2 XRs over and measured the gap from tire to front footpad, both boards have 5mm gap, Vega and Burris are both at 15 psi and both have around 500 miles. So those two tires have the same rolling circumference. 🙂

Good stuff bro. I live up some satanic hills - and my Pint can’t even make it. I’m a big dude and I’m still amazed at the power these motors generate, although some more would be helpful. I didn’t consider changing the stock wheel on the XR - I might need to do that for a bit of a torque boost.

yeah i chaanged my settings to elevated on my pint, the nose is somewhat up and it will stay up, i got the confident climbing hill on elevated mode. but most of the time skyline works for me on Hill as well, with that said when i am on skyline, going up hill, that i have to back up a bit every 10-15 feet, just to practice my front board is always up.
@oldskooldeano
@oldskooldeano 4 года назад
I feel this is an important lesson to learn. I had a bad accident on a hill that led to a broken shoulder and some the points Mario makes would have helped me back then. First of all, I'm a heavier rider, and if that's you too, then know that any of these problems are magnified greatly. The board is already working hard to keep you level so any extra power requirements because of an incline change are increased. This brings you ever closer to that point where the motor just gives up. The nosedive. Be aware that any change in surface elevation can be the straw that breaks the camels back as it were. Even if that change is only for a few inches like a speed bump or crack. Treat hills with caution until you know them and your riding abilities, just like Mario says!

I loooove doing tail skids
@MrDmadness
@MrDmadness 3 года назад
Great video. There are considerations. Including tire pressures. The tire flat ( not carving ) has greater grip as is has a greater surface contact area., when you carve you are pushing more kinetic energy ( battery ) into a smaller surface contact point, less friction to overcome. Youve noticed that carrying speed and momentum into a hill wil allow you to climb more too ( and saves battery ), when you transition from heel to toe edge you gain the potential energy ( your balance ) thst becomes kinetic, in the transition. ( when you adjust your muscles ) .. its important to learn the points where the board hits the overcurrent ( potholes cracks etc ) and cannot compensate. You are wrong about the tail low on downhkll, dont underestimate a tail drag crash... tail drag, esoecially on trail or dirt = accelleration and no "edge" . Understand that voltage IS electrical PRESSURE. So overcurrent will happen at lower torques

thanks for the video. hey so about a month and a half ago, i got a new bumper with fangs from carbonsmith for my pint, and i carefully went up my buddy's really steep (but smooth) hill to see at what point the nose dive would occur and get mitigated by the fangs. and at one point it did --- the pint wigged out and the fangs hit the pavement and i think the motor must have shut off because i unexpectedly slammed my right/rear foot heel on the pavement. i didn't fall off the board, but i guess the steep angle caused significant hard impact and i'm pretty sure i fracture my heel. i've recovered about 95% now, still riding the pint a lot, never really stopped haha. but it was really an unexpected experience. any thoughts?

Been bitten by the OW bug. Dont even have one yet. Love the content from many community creators out there. Do they push back going downhill as well? To maintain stability? Being that the motor doesn't have to work as hard but cant allow the board to outrun the speed limiter?

You forgot to mention that if you try going down a hill with a fully charged battery, the board could shut down while going down because of the regenerative battery. Remember, if your battery is fully charged or near 100%, the board will shut down when you go downhill and use braking because it will regenerate battery power and if it reaches 100%, it’ll shut down.

Do you think putting some of the smaller wheels on the front would improve its hill climbing ability. Not so much that you would be rolling on them, but that if it did dive, it might not throw you forward so abruptly. And this is coming from someone with zero experience with the Onewheel, but would like to own one, without trying to stop the rotation of the planet with my face at every turn...or hill in this case.

I don't know where to practice this lol I live in the flattest part of the flattest state in America. Not hyperbole. Literally, mathematically, statistically the flattest place in america. I might panic just seeing a hill, much less trying to stop on one! lol (I'm partly kidding, there are a few inclines I can probably use.. like a raised church with an angled parking lot out back, or a few raised driveways in a neighborhood nearby. Those aren't hills though.. lol literally just a small raised section because of construction.. maybe that's a hill... idk. Haha but they're rarely more than a few feet difference and some are literally like a 2ft raised area. I really wish I had some hills.. aside from the crazy huge bridges in Tampa...)

You didn’t talk too much about going DOWN hills, can you get away with going a little faster going downhill because its easier on the motor?
@TheBoardGarage
@TheBoardGarage 4 года назад
You can, of course. You just have to be mindful of a couple of things. First, you're going fast, so that's something one would want to be comfortable with first, as you would have to deal with shorter reaction times to the bad road, and also your momentum is increased from the slope. Braking is harder. Second, even though it's downhill, the motor still reaches its limit from the rotations. The higher the speed of the motor, the lower its capability for torque.

i disagree about putting it into elevated mode, i dont think its necessary and doesn't help you train to learning the limits of your riding mode, for newer riders i usually tell them to put it in mission and not change it till they really know their limits
@TheBoardGarage
@TheBoardGarage 4 года назад
Well of course it's not necessary, which is why I showed the same slope in Mission. However if one comes across a hill that is severe, or uncomfortable, then it doesn't make sense to purposely restrict oneself just for the sake of learning limits. Limits are learned usually in one of two ways: through measured, gradual practice, or by hitting that limit quickly and finding what happens on the other side of that boundary. There's nothing stopping someone from going up a hill on Elevated, and then not changing modes when they become familiar with that hill. I personally don't agree that subjecting oneself to unnecessary risk actually teaches limits and skills any better or faster than proceeding cautiously and with high levels of attention.
