I plan on doing a followup soon. My HDMI issues were fixed with upgraded HDMI cables, I have tried bluetooth and it works, the Onkyo cell phone app works great, and I've experimented some with a 7.1 surround setup. I will talk about these things and more when I revisit my Onkyo TX-RZ820.

Haha, E-waste within 5 years when the hdmi board blows. Check out one of the American companies that still designs, engineers audio equipment, i.e. Emotiva & Outlaw. I went through 4 Onkyo receivers between 2005-2017, never again, got myself a processor and seperate amp now from Emotiva for about the same price as this receiver. They're built like tanks and I suspect I'll have my A500 amp until I die. The MC-700 processor, however I'll change out as technology evolves or the need arises- unlikely for me as I'm satisfied with my 5.1 setup and have no interest really in atmos etc. I consider myself an audiophile and purist and in that vein, simpler is often better.

@@scottsaustin If the HDMI board blows, or anything else goes wrong, then I will certainly do a followup vid. You mentioned "American" companies, but your Emotiva BasX A-500 is made in China. @@ThriftyAV Emotivas products are engineered and designed in the USA in Nashville by American engineers, including the BasX series-hence my designation of them as an American Firm-much like Apple is an American company that designs and engineers it's products principally in the USA but with contract manufacturing around the world. Emotiva assembles and calibrates their higher end equipment i.e. XPA Amps & XMC processors in Tennessee though I would suspect the components contained in each, aside from the DSP chips (USA/Canada) are made in China. Hi it's a nice video, I have the same receiver in my home. I have doubt that whether the exhaust fan mounted on the top of the box will work immediately or it will work once the heat exceed to certain temperature. I never seen mine running. May be my fan has problem or it is programmed to work only in certain temperature. Could you please confirm with your unit.

Thank you. I plan to do a followup know that I've owned it for about a month. I have the Onkyo app installed on my phone, and it works great! Bluetooth works well. I got the ARC working properly with the TV set. And I've tried a 7.2 setup (although the two "side" speakers kept getting in the way, so I went back to 5.2. Haven't tried the zone 2 stuff yet, but when I do, I'll post the "Onkyo TX-RZ820 "update"!

At modest listening levels, the cooling fan generally doesn't engage. To make it run, turn up the volume to listening levels that might disturb the neighbors and leave it there for a few minutes. If it still doesn't kick on, you may have an issue.

Recently purchased a TX SR 373 receiver as an open box as is model from Best Buy, without a remote. I got an off brand RediRemote, but the setup screen doesn't show up on my projector. I contacted Onkyo, but they won't return my emails. Struggling with setup/surround sound/adjusting sound etc. I'm open to any suggestions. I got the hdmi sound extractor box. I did get sound with an optical cable, however not getting sound from all speakers. The bass and treble aren't working on the remote. According to the manual, it seems I need HDMI to get on screen set up but as I said the HDMI isn't working with my projector.

Most universal remotes are pretty good at setting power, volume, play, FF, etc, but notoriously bad at programming the menu buttons. You could try one and see, but I wouldn't get my hopes up. You may have better luck simply finding a replacement remote on Ebay.

Thinking about buying the onkyo tx-nr696. What are your thoughts on that? Do you know if i can chromecast videos with that? As of now i use an old onkyo receiver (which im going to replace as its not working 100%), but only audio through optical cable and chromecast using my smartTv. As im thinking of buying myself a xbox one and some other stuff i want to connect everything via HDMI.. but it would be a bummer if i couldnt cast any video. It might be a stupid question, but im kinda new to this stuff ^^

I don't know as much about the NR series as I do the RZ series, but my understanding is that the Chromecast on Onkyo receivers is AUDIO only, not video. To Chromecast video, I use an outboard device.

I'm thinking of purchasing this unit, I've heard of several issues with onkyo's including HDMI problems. How has this model been for you and would you recommend it. Thanx
@ThriftyAV
@ThriftyAV 4 года назад
If you search "Onkyo HDMI Problems", you will find many articles about receivers manufactured between 2009 and 2012, and Onkyo even created a Customer Care Program to help resolve customer issues with those models. However once a brand develops a reputation, it is hard to shake. As far as other issues you might have heard, a lot of folks like to talk trash so you have to consider the source. Some loyal XBox users badmouth Playstation, and vice versa... or Apple vs Andriod, or Chevy vs Ford. The only issue I had with HDMI was with the Audio Return Channel, and it turned out to be my Roku causing the problem, so I can't blame Onkyo for that. Once I got everything set up, I've been 100% pleased with the performance of this receiver.

Did you set up manually your speaker or with AccueEQ ? I got a new TX NR696 and the sound is not loud. I have to increase a lot. I've got a TX NR 828 but doesn't work anymore (it shutdown after 2/3 sec) but sound was far better.

I use AccuEQ. The TX-RZ820 provides plenty enough power for my Polk S-60 mains. The 696 has 100Watts per channel, not as much as the 820, but it should still be pretty loud. Try "direct" mode and see if it is still underpowered. This bypasses all the digital signal processing (including AccuEQ).

@ThriftyAV
@ThriftyAV 4 года назад
@@NoRoads2AllRoads The spec sheet says 130W per channel, two channels driven with 8ohm speakers with 0.08%THD. This is the official FTC spec as required by federal regulation, so they shouldn't fudge on this. The 250W power rating, as you said, is for one channel driven and has a terrible THD of 10%. This is with a 6ohm speaker that nobody owns. The spec sheet lists even higher power rating claims for "dynamic power", but this is not a continuous power rating and no THD is listed. SCAM indeed. Regardless, with efficient speakers like my Polk S60 mains, 130W stereo is plenty of power for my living room. Here is the link to the spec sheet: filedepot.onkyousa.com/Files/sell_sheets/TX-RZ820_US_05.08.17.pdf The RU-vid channel Techno Dad did a recent video about power claims by receiver brands. I have a non ARC TV. Will have a Firetv and Blu Ray in their respective inputs. Will I have audio/video thru the HDMI out (ARC)????????? I am waiting on receiving and I don't want to use optical.
@ThriftyAV
@ThriftyAV 4 года назад
If your TV does not support ARC, then communication though the HDMI hooked up to your TV will be one directional, from the receiver to the TV. For FireTV and BluRay, this is no big deal as these signals are coming in through separate devices; however, if you are using the tuner on your television to pick up broadcasts, and you want audio from your television tuner to play on your receiver, you will have to find a method to get it there. The three methods to get audio from your TV tuner to the receiver are HDMI-ARC, optical, and analog stereo RCA cables. The limitation on the analog stereo method is that surround programming will be limited to older Pro Logic technology, no Dolby Digital or DTS.

My Pioneer plasma is 1080P so is the BluRay. Will I receive up to 5.1 DTS on the BluRay and regular 5.1 on my Firetv even though I don't have ARC. I would connect them to the HDMI inputs of the ONKYO and use the HDMI out marked ARC and plug it to the plasma for viewing and listen to audio thru the ONKYO. The receiver has not shipped yet and your decision is crucial.
@ThriftyAV
@ThriftyAV 4 года назад
@@dea535 The way you describe hooking up the BluRay and Firetv, you will get 5.1 (or even 7.1) just fine. You would only run into audio issues if you used HDMI inputs for these devices on the plasma TV.

The Onkyo TX-NR535 that I used for over four years never had HDMI issues. The issues I had were lack of power (65W/Ch), lack of a built in phono preamp, and too few inputs for my many A/V sources. Since posting this video about my new TX-RZ820, I fixed the issue I was having with HDMI ARC with a new HDMI cable. I'm no longer having any issues with HDMI. The new receiver is loud and clean, with plenty of source options. If I start having problems, the RZ series is covered with a 3 year warranty. Comparable Pioneer Elite models offer a 2 year warranty. I am brand agnostic. I have owned A/V gear from Pioneer, Aiwa, Akai, AKG, Alesis, Behringer, Denon, Hitachi, JVC, Kenwood, KLH, LG, Mackie, Marantz, Nakamichi, Onkyo, Optimus, Panasonic, Philips, Polk, QSC, Realistic, Rotel, Samsung, Sharp, Shure, Sony, Tascam, Teac, Technics, Toshiba, Yamaha, and more.
