I've got it paired with a iNuke 6000 for the lows, thanks to your review on it BigD!! :P The HDMI passthrough has pretty much zero latency so it works perfectly as my gaming/music/movie setup My first ever amp before the RZ610 was also an Onkyo that I bought over a decade ago when Circuit City was liquidating their stores and was daily driven, and it's STILL kickin, now it's in my bathroom serving music duty while I shower lol. Everyone always talks about Denon amps (and I'm sure they're great amps) but Onkyo definitely builds high quality stuff and this proves it. Team Onkyo 4 life! XD

Pure audio mode, disables tone controls, shuts off display output through the HDMI. The idea is to turn the unit into as close to a "straight wire with gain" as possible, not increase power output. Hence the name Pure Audio. Denon has a similar mode with theirs. It's called Pure Direct.
@Frietpan
@Frietpan 5 лет назад
i wonder if thd actually goes down in pure direct,straight,pure w/e mode, or otherwise does the display and other hardware add distortion. or is it all a gimmick.
@brentb5303
@brentb5303 5 лет назад
I would venture a guess and say that it does make measurable differences in the signal path. What that translates to in regards to the final output audibly to the human ear is questionable. If adding such a feature makes consumers pick one device over another. Then why not, I guess? So gimmick, most likely. I have a pre amp from Yamaha, the c-70 circa 1982. It has an option called direct disc. When pushed in it bypasses the parametric eq and a couple of other stops along the signal path for the phono input. If the parametric eq is set flat I can't tell the difference. It does add an additional button and light, so there's that.

I've got the 810 in my living room and an 820 in the theater room. The 3rd zone of both feed to each other. Zone 2 of the living room 810 goes to the kitchen and dining room and Zone 2 of the theater room goes to some outdoor speakers. It's great...I can have music playing throughout the entire house and outside with a few quick clicks on the Onkyo app. Excellent receivers for the price except I had some issues with the 820 and 4k60 video. I'm not sure what the difference is between the 810 and 820 but yeah, the 810 is much happier with 60fps 4k.

I bought the TX-RZ820 from Crutchfield based on this video. I have Magnepan's entry level speakers with the quasi-ribbon tweeters and a rated 4 ohm impedance. Blew up the receiver, then another. Crutchfield replaced both under warranty. I opted for a dedicated 300 wpc amplifier from Emotiva and I'm glad I did. The receiver is great for signal processing and ergonomics, but it's still a fairly weak chip amp in the power section. Does ok with dummy loads and constant impedance but not great with difficult to drive speakers.

Great Video as shears BigD. I know you don't have a way of testing it, but it would be interesting to see what thr all channels driven output is. One of the deceiving practices of Home Theater Amplifier companies is only stating the 2 channel output, knowing full well at least 5 of the channels will be driven. When that happens you have a dramatically lower number.

Great video once again BigD! You made a good decision with that receiver IMO. It's all about the power supply in audio. You can always modify gear to make it better if you want. But there's no point, if the original foundation is shite in the first place. And that foundation is mainly the power supply. Which is mainly the transformer. And that one looks beefy! If you're running it in direct mode, or just using it as a 2 channel amp. The 1 power supply is fine. I would rather have 1 nice high current PS, then 5 little crappy ones anyway. Less chance of issues, and cheaper in the long run I would think. That's a very flexible piece of gear man. Especially with the Pre out. Nice stuff.
@wal
@wal 5 лет назад
Good points brother 👌
@kingrpriddick
@kingrpriddick 5 лет назад
"Seperate" home theater amps move to individual and isolated amp circuits, then the high end stuff has a transformer per channel. They do this for channel separation (aka avoiding one channel bleeding into the other) but transformer based power supplies don't really fail unless you cook them so it's not really adding points of failure, if anything it creates redundancy in that you can only burn one channel at a time. Some go so far as to be modular and swapping entire channels can be accomplished by the user from the back of the amp. Truly home audio is another world.
@seanlacroix
@seanlacroix 5 лет назад
Ya man, I'd say the transformer first, then those huge capacitors and the amps themselves.

Would love to see you test some of the stereo onkyo models. I have the TX 8511 8522 and 8211 they are all great recievers and used they can be had for a steal. Thanks for the vid and glad to see you doing more non car audio gear (still love those tests though)

Cool man! If I had more time to test, I’d test more non-car audio. I try to throw in some occasionally

You should test the Onkyo TX SR-805 or the TX NR-1009/1010 models! Those weighed close to 60lbs!

I love onkyo. I have 2 onkyo WRAT M-282 amps. Says it’ll put out 100 Watts per channel, when I tested it, it was able to do 400 Watts per channel at 2 ohms 🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻 Also, they’re powering 8 Skar Audio 12” subs. slightly underpowered but they still push hard.

The next time you dyno an av receiver, please dyno it with all channels. It would be interesting to see what happens when all channels are going at once. I and many others have wondered about that during lab tests elsewhere.

Very nice. I'm wondering what an m5000r amp would put out at the same specs. Its power is rated rather low but that's measured at only 0.05%thd.. wondering if it actually would be beneficial to add a m5000r to a avr that outputs this amount of watts to power the fronts.

Do you believe my crown xls 2500 is outputting it’s rated output or giving a higher output than rated??

I have the TX-RZ820. I find it interesting that they always rate amplifiers with 2 channels driven, but when using this as a home theater receiver, folks are driving 5 or 7 channels. Thank you for testing the mains. Would love to see how it does with more channels driven.

@@lavantz345 I have been very happy with my Onkyo TX-RZ820. It has been plenty loud for both home theater and with two channel stereo, and it is packed with features.

ThriftyAV Cool, I currently have a Yamaha RX-V471. I find it lacks power, so I was considering getting the RZ820 since it's cheaper now

Nice test. Personally I've always wondered if Onkyo home block amps could be bridged for big gains. Old school is the best school

Randy Pullman i used to have an Onkyo Integra M-504 back when i was in college. It was modestly rated at 165 watts per channel. That amp took everything we could throw at it, we ran multiple speakers on both channels for hours during partys and we did bridge it once to drive a single performance PA monitor the amp never even got warm! It was an incredible amp i wish i still had it.

tennu Bullshit, I own several 2 channel home stereo power amps that are bridgeable!! You must not be much of an audiophile. We arent talking Frys and Best Buy equipment here buddy. I own an Adcom 555se that is bridgeable And YES we bridged that Onkyo that had binding post and ran it on one channel for hours and it ran fine. Know what youre talking about before you comment!!!!

I have a 2002? TX-DS676 I think is rated at 80/ch driving Klipsch R-620F fronts in a 5.1 setup without the sub. ( complete klipsch speakers ) and it rocks. I went to Onkyo back in the early 90's after having a 120w/ch Sony receiver that was blown away by the Onkyo 70 or 75w/ch surround receiver I got to replace my bedroom setup after a 2 ch Harman Kardon amp got killed by lightning. I also got a pair of JB tower speakers that were all display models heavily discounted at Circuit City. The Onkyo just blew away my beloved Sony with 1/2 the rated power. I have been a Onkyo fan ever since. I got this receiver used several years ago for around $75 after my DS575 ? unit died. They are both from around 2002 and were around $1000 retail I think. Neither have HDMI but both had 4 optical inputs so who cares. I think mine weights close to 30 lbs as well and it is only 5.1 channels. Another great video. Love your stuff.

Looks like 32.4 lbs per cnet and 85/ch @ 8ohms. I love the Phono stage on these older amps better than the newer ones. I have an old Onkyo belt table with Ortofon Red stylus. It isn't high end by any means but it sounds sweet. Love all my old Chicago and Monkees albums. Even got an old Flip Wilson record. Cd's are great and everything but the sound is a little different coming from vinyl. Even got an old Rush album. I want a time machine. Go back to the 80's.
