Solfege (also called solfeggio, sol-fa, solfa, solfeo) is a musical education technique for ear training skills. Steven Baker (www.stevenbakermusic.com/) pianist with the Rainer Hersch Orkestra, is a virtuoso solfegietto (we just made that word up because there kind of isn't one). Whatever, here you can enjoy his amazing talent. This performance took place at Cadogan Hall, London as part of the Rainer Hersch Orkestra's 'New Year's Eve Bash 2019'. Tickets for the 2020 NYE Bash are on sale here cadoganhall.com/whats-on/rain...

ABOUT STEVEN BAKER
Steven grew up in Brisbane, Australia. He holds a Bachelor of Music (1st class honours and University Medal, University of Queensland) and a PhD in composition (University of York, UK). His family suspect he was drugged.

As a French native speaker, singing in do-ré-mi-fa-sol-la-si-do is all natural, as it's basically singing the names of the notes. I assume it's more difficult for someone who uses a C-D-E-F-G-A-H/B-C system. Also I've heard that germanic countries use relative solmisation, instead of latin and slavic countries who have absolute solmisation. My solfège teacher, who is an amazing teacher, told me that relative solmisation develops a good relative ear.

My daughter's school is teaching movable-do, but I use fixed. Always have; yet, I also understand movable "sa" in Indian Classical Music, too. We're using fixed-do at home, since I'm teaching her recorder, and there are many more benefits to fixed-do for her at the present time. She doesn't really have a relative ear. It's perfect, so once she knows a fingering, she can transpose on the fly, which is exactly what I do. She first learning, but that's how I grew up. So, she's not bothered when I play Alto to her Soprano, because either a) the fingering matches, but we're in harmony, or b) the fingering doesn't match, but the tones do. She's only interested in her own fingering --> note mappings. It's good.

Solmisation was developed by Zoltán Kodály as part of the Kodály method. Proud Hungarian is here. We learn solmisation starting in kindergarden and all the way through our education, so if you stop a stranger on the street and ask him to solmise a song it's not impossible that he succeeds..

When I did music A-Level (21 years ago!) we had a substitute teacher try to show us how to do this, together with specific hand positions. Unfortunately, I think she only covered for about three weeks, so it wasn't covered in enough detail for it to sink in. This was fascinating!

I would need to practice this to be able to do it so fast, but solfège is still how I work out new songs I am learning. Here in Hungary kids are taught the Kodály method. I still remember Bach's Menuet in G-minor, even if I'd be waken up from my sleep: so do re mi fa so do do la fa so la ti do' do do, etc. It was well, almost half a century ago 😊

Isn’t the song supposed to start at -do-? Now I’m confused. He starts at -ti- Major key starting from prime? So to -do- should be a whole key, but from -ti- to -do- is a half step. He’s consistent throughout the whole song. Please explain... I thought it was: do do re do ti la so etc... 😖

It's the difference between the fixed-do and the moveable-do systems I think. Look it up on Wikipedia. (I'm with you, I prefer moveable-do. Good for intervals.)
@timmynoya
@timmynoya 3 года назад
CreaMundi Looks like he had been tought by the fixed-do system. Where Do is C. That means when the song is on 1 sharp (G Major) and the notation is 1-2-3 he has to sing it “So-La-Ti”, even for my ear (which I’m a Relative Pitch with moveable-do system) it sounds “Do-Re-Mi”.

This is far more common in Indian Classical Music. We use the congruent Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Dha Ni system, and it is called Sargam.

I had missed the first few days of our music classes in HS (recorder) so when I arrived the teacher asked me if I knew anything about music and I told her I could sing do-re-mi. She asked me to do it, which I did, then did it backwards. I had just impressed her (mostly because I was singing the correct notes) and asked if I could join her chorale too, which I did. One day, my husband, myself and our three children went to visit and arts and crafts show. We were walking along when my youngest son - probably around 5 at the time - saw a pan flute, picked it up and started playing. The seller just looked at him strangely. We apologized for him to touch anything (and putting his mouth on one). He said no, that's not it. He could play and well at that. Apparently it's a hard one to get the notes right. We bought the pan flute and he still plays it, mostly music from the Minotaur's cartoons (the centaur plays the pan flute). I love these kinds of special musical skills, thank you for sharing this, Nicole

In the first half of the song I was like, this note sounds like the tonic of the key why is he singing ti instead of do? and then later the tonic is actually do? then I rewinded and it had a key change and it all made sense but I still prefer the tonic be do

@timmynoya
@timmynoya 3 года назад
Really?? I’m in Indonesia, South East Asia, and as a kid I was studied music in YAMAHA. And that’s how we ALL learn to sing. But quite different, we used to sing in flexible solmitation, the moveable Doh. No matter the key is, the first not is always Doh. And that’s how I can “scan” the notes by hearing and play it all along. I’m not a Perfect Pitch. Might say I’m a Relative Pitch.
