I think it’s absolutely okay to not want to get tanned. For certain people and certain skin tones, tanning doesn’t give that ‘golden glow’. Instead, it makes one look look dull. This is something that happens with me, too. I think it’s a problem when one goes out of their way to alter their original skin tone. However, protecting your skin from stuff that may alter it even temporarily (like the sun) is absolutely alright. I guess it counts as loving what you’re born with 😊

I am a malayalee living in europe...when i am in india , i am fair...but when i am in europe they see me like an african ....so the complexion depends on others perception ...who wants to be fair as long as you are mentally happy and being yourself sitting with a cup of coffee and dear ones near you

I think its totally okay for people who are fair to wear sunscreen because they want to prevent skin tanning. Because most of tanning is not uniform and its not a glowy tan that you get when you are in the sun I think if we are okay with people loving brown and dark colored skin, there is nothing wrong with people who are born fair to not want to tan and protect themselves from tanning. Isnt the whole point of it to love the skin you are already born with? Personally, when I tan, it looks patchy, it looks bad with hyperpigmentation in some areas and some areas not so affected. So I do want to protect my skin from that

Well then I guess, this is where you’re wrong! It is okay not wanting to have sun tan. I too cover my skin with long sleeves if I go out in the sun. And it’s totally okay. That does not mean I am color shaming anyone.

This is sooooo relatable....so proud of you for voicing such concerns which are still prevalent in our society....i have a similar skin tone as yours....my family has never had a problem with me being dark ( rest of my family is quiet fair skinned ) but i can't tell you how many times neighbours/relatives/well wishers have very sweetly adviced my mom to ask me to use FAIR N LOVELY !!! Today i am 43...i workout at a football ground every morning with my husband and i keep over hearing such conversations around of how the sun is going to darken their skin.... thankfully my husband feels it's better to be healthy than to be fair🤪

Hey Jovi! I agree with your point of view on the whitening creams, had my share of those but covering your skin to protect from tanning is completely okay too. I'm dusky skinned and tan very easily, still I prefer to shield myself from tanning, because it leads the skin to be extremely dry, patchy, uneven and not very presentable, especially in corporate setting, its not because I dont love my dusk. Its actually a personal choice and not really governed by "White or Dark" skin mindset. This is what I felt, rest what you said about the branding of whitening the skin, that is completely right.

Tanning doesn't help anyone's skin, both fair and dusky skinned people. It is just pure sun damage. So if someone wants to protect themselves from tanning, that's perfectly fine. I totally agree with all the other things you said in this video 👍

Hi Jovi, I loved the video... I am a deep skinned person and I have used my fair share of whitening creams as a beginner to makeup. But really glad for changes in Industry where now a days we are also getting better products matching our skin tone and for content creators like you who help us choose the right products. Unfortunately there is a long way to go for a complete change... lets be the change even in small ways as I have told my kids to use sunscreen religiously but don't stop them from doing what they want to do for the fear of tan... I am guilty as charged for not stepping out in sun becoz of the fear of getting tanned..but i swear to my god since i have started following you i started to take care of my skin and not caring about the color it is. I just religiously apply sunscreen every single day. And started loving myself..although i still hear comments like "why have you become dark,are you roaming in the sun." Some of us love our untanned skin without it getting crisper when out in the sun (coz the sun literally burns the skin and uncomfortably so). So I get what that girl meant by jacket, sun and tan. Question is....why is this girl shaming that girl for her personal preference for protection from sun tan. Or does this one think her opinion is the only right opinion? Something must have happened on that trip where this girl was annoyed by that girl....so the sun and jacket shaming makes sense (coz now even I'm curious to go see that vlog so as to see who that girl is).

I'm glad you brought this topic. Frankly I feel the problem is much deeper. It's not only about skin colour, It's about total identification with your body. If light skinned people put tanning lotion is that ok? I think if you are aware of your intention about what and why you are doing something I think it's ok. One could argue that even putting make up is unrequired. The very word'make up'..that's made up. When I went to college my mom asked me..why do you put on lipstick? I said I want to look good..implying I don't without it. I think it's a very subjective matter..you are correct ..the question always should be am I doing it coz I feel inferior to others or I do it as I just enjoy it.

It’s nice of you to pick up this topic, it’s borderline crazy these days however here are my takes on it : 1. Firstly.. If it’s peak summers, my go to drink would always be fresh coconut water, probably chilled for 30 mins. 2. Regarding a girl wearing the jacket, I don’t think there is anything wrong with that, I do the same. I almost always wear a full sleeve top because I don’t want to get tanned but it’s not because I am not confident in my skin or anything.I just don’t like tan unlike some people and it’s a hassle to get rid of that tan over next the couple of days and it takes effort and it’s not always possible to have a dedicated skin care routine so the easiest way is following the rule of precaution better than cure. But jacket in summer , is a Nah 😀, a shrug .. may be. 3. Regarding people trying creams and stuff, I think it’s a personal choice end of the day. It’s like someone asking you not to wear make up bcoz they don’t like it but you have your own reasons for doing it. In my case, I have sun spots on my cheekbones and tiny spots all over my face, now I have tried tomatoes, potatoes, papaya, and all different kinds of face packs and I also know that they are not going to go away completely, but if my skin looks even a little better, I feel good the next day. It’s like a placebo effect, the cream might not be working at all but if the person feels a mental satisfaction, then why not. Their money, their skin and body. 4. Now this is total garbage Gyan but hey we all want something we don’t have and people wanting to be fair is just another one of those things. Doesn’t necessarily mean you will get what you want.

I am dark skinned and when I get tan it won't get rid of easily.. It takes months to recover... I look pigmented, tired and patchy.. Who likes to look like a weird burned toast... It kills my confidence...especially I work in beauty industry

I think its absolutely fine to not want to get tanned .When we preach darker skinned people to embrace their natural complexion and not try to "whiten" it, isn't it reasonable that the fair skinned people don't wanna get tanned and look darker and preserve their complexion as well? It applies either ways right? Also I don't think its just about having lighter or darker complexion, its just that people want even skin tone.

Sun tans are uneven. I wouldn’t want it either. Coming from a brown skinned person myself here. I don’t think it’s about discrimination here. Let people have their freedom to want what they want for their skin as long as its safe and healthy.

Hi Jovita. I get where you’re coming from with being annoyed at the constant need for skin whitening. It’s time for people to move on. However, I think it’s quite unfair for you to judge the girl who chose to keep her jacket on to avoid tanning on her arms. This is a problem I personally have that my arms tan horribly and look almost black and very different from the rest of my body. I’d choose uniform skin tone anyday. No hate, just expressing my opinion.

Hey Jovi, I agree with you about skin whitening still being promoted. My mom and brother are dusky and I always tell them that I love their skintone. My mom tells me how people used to treat her when she was young. I was very fair when I was young but as I played sports in the sun, my skin got tanned which really didn't bother me much back then. But as I grew up and started wearing some makeup, I realised how tanning made my skin uneven. People started pointing out the dark patches but I avoided them in my 20s. I'm 32 now and still struggling with uneven skintone. My face is darker than my body. I struggle to find foundation and other such products. I try to avoid tanning with clothes too because sunscreen isn't enough. I don't want to be fairer but I do want my skin to look as it is. I don't want my foundation or bb cream to look lighter on me. I don't own several different types and shades of foundations and stuff. While I get the point you're trying to make, I also understand the girl with the jacket . It is also possible that she wasn't wearing sunscreen on her body under the jacket and tanning is not the only reason she wasn't taking it off. Even if her reason is just tanning, it's her body, right? She doesn't want to be be fair or white. She wants to stay of her own skin tone and I think it is okay for her to feel that way 😊

Having said that .. I really would like u to review / use glutathione tablets, that again claim of achieving white skin tone in short time !!! 😢

Definitely agree! And about the tanning thing, i would definitely not choose to be afraid of a bit of tanning over being comfortable in the moment esp when it's hot and stuffy. Put some sunscreen on and enjoy! Also, Jovi, maybe next time you can talk about how fair actresses are still preferred, even tollywood would prefer to hire non telugu fair actresses than actually having a proper dusky telugu actress who knows her language well!! Hi Jovi, how are you? Am kind of with you on this but I think it's always the opposite attracts whether it comes to skin tone, hair color, height, or body type.. And there is a market for everything around the world! I am in Ireland now where I get to see loads and loads of tanning and tinted products in pharmacy or drugstore ..even moisturizers are tinted..high chances that you may pick up a tinted moisturizer if you don't give attention to the labels are so high

I agree with you 100% on everything you said except the part abt the person wearing a jacket to avoid getting tanned. Isn't tanning a form of sun damage (i learnt this from you!). So wanting to protect your skin with a jacket isn't the same scale as not going outdoors or not playing a sport to avoid a tan. And yeah tans don't always look good if you have excessive exposure and the golden glow soon gets grey (for me anyway). Some people just have more sensitive skin!

Haha...the thumbnail had me dying but filter is still definitely the least harming whitening method I guess 😅 Anyways jokes apart I am a 90s kid & growing up nobody commented on my skintone because back then childhood was all about eat,sleep,study,play & repeat (good old days 😊) I remember being a happy & confident child but as I grew old I started to notice that some aunties( in my cases its mostly the aunties & sadly most of them are mothers of my friends) would very subtly comment on my skintone or appearance whereas people my age or younger would compliment on my skin even if it's brown(I was told I have olive skintone which I had no idea about & my skin is healthy) So I was hopeful of the present generation but looking at these trends where everyone is competing to look like voldemort is bit disheartening 😏 Every skintone is pretty & do take care of it but no need to go way overboard js to alter what your mama has given you 😌 Personally I don't care as long as no-ones bothering me & this time I might defend myself if someone does... Just go through the malayali beauty vlogs every thing is about how to get fair skin and the diy tips . It's literally killing me in every way possible. Okay so...let's see the other side as well. I personally love dark toned glowy body, though I'm fair). (That's one small reason I love your looks) I've spent days exercising under sun to look snatched, toned and like dark tv models. I can send you my pics to prove this. Eventually, I had to accept my skin. See we all have to accept our skin tones and be who we are! I've seen Polish people apply orangish corrector to look little brown because they were pinkish fair. Going crazy and harming yourself with poisonous compositions is dangerous.

I understand where you are coming from.. Some people are desperate to fit into society preferences towards fair skin. You detest bias towards dark skin at work, family, relationships etc. All that is well-intended! But I don't think we should censure people who like to become fairer for their own reasons (not to fit into society)! Appreciating what you are born will definitely make you happy in the long run. But, also people quite often want what they don't have. Every once in a while I want to be a few shades lighter, have olive eyes and lighter bleached hair.. I get too bored being brown girl, black eyes and black hair all my life. We live only once and we should live however we want without hurting others. That is all that matters!

In Tamilnadu a parlour owner made some skin whitening cream and sold it. A girl was using it and her face turned white. But then, her kidney got severely affected almost failed. The doctors stated that it is due to the high mercury content in that cream. Really sad 😔 this obsession needs to end.

Adding to what Jovita says here multiple times. One cannot change the colour, type, texture of the skin. I remember Jovita saying in one of her previous videos some people are genetically blessed they put vim on their skin it still glows. So before using /buying products find out your skin type, undertone, stuff that you may be allergic to. This is going to help identify your skin type, improve skin health and eventually save a lot of money. What she says is correct: our obsession with 'gora rang' comes from the time when we wer made to believe that we are less than the foreign people. So becoming white or fair is not the aim . Aim is to have Healthy skin (and healthy thoughts)

Love the way break the stereotypes of Indian beauty standard. I live in uk and I am dark skinned but here they tell I got a beautiful tan. But when I go to India once in a year all will be like “you are using lot of skin care product but you are more dark, what happened”. I vl tell this my natural colour and now I learned to cherish it . Concept of beauty in India is still same . 😢

Aspiring for a certain skin shade is a matter of personal choice. I feel we are becoming too militant about it. If someone wants their skin to be the lightest shade that they can be, how is that any different from someone who applies foundation, concealer, corrector, etc. to achieve the best look that they can with products? While we are all comfortable in brown skin, I don't know anyone who would want to tan and be darker than what their shade is! So while I agree about not being obsessed with fair skin, it's not a sin for a person to aspire or use products or home made remedies which help them achieve a skin shade that they want.
