1. Ssamjang is characterized by the harmony of the savory taste of soybean paste and the spicy and sweet taste of red pepper paste. Mostly suitable for vegetables or meat. 2. Chojang is made by mixing red pepper paste and vinegar with garlic, ginger, and other auxiliary ingredients. In Korea, it is often used when dipping sashimi. The fish that the two of us ate is a reasonable price. In addition to fish, other foods are basically available, so it is not expensive. Eating sashimi at the beach is basically expensive because you eat while watching the scenery. If you eat sashimi in the city center, the price is cheap, but there are many places where the freshness is low. The soup is made by simmering small pieces of meat from the head and bones of the remaining fish after trimming the fish to order, along with a spicy sauce. This is included by default in the price you order. Some restaurants in remote places have delicious food, but if possible, the taste is basically guaranteed to some extent in places where restaurants are gathered. And sashimi is something even Koreans like and dislike. ** On the east coast of Korea, sashimi is good, but red snow crab / king crab / lobster, etc. are also popular. **
Thanks for explaining all of this. It gives a lot of context to our experience in the video. We had no idea it was customary to get that soup for free! That’s pretty cool
Sashimi is expensive stuff so you weren't ripped off sure.. Even for korean, it is a special treat for occasions. Fish soup you had at the end is included in the meal set you paid. They made it out of the fish you had as sashimi.
She didn't "up-sell" you the soup. It comes with the sashimi you ordered because they make the soup out of the edible parts of the fish after the sashimi is filleted off. Just to let you know.
Hahaha... Tips: Sashimi(Japaneses style) is aged raw fish, and "Whei"(Korean style) is fresh raw fish. Typical dipping sauce for Sashimi is soy sauce with wasabi, and typical dipping sauce for Whei is Cho-Gochoo-Jang(red paste vinegary sauce). I hope this can help your further adventure in Korea. :)
Brave, you guys tried mongae! I lived near Norangjin market and mom and I ate mong gae with red sauce once she completed her shop list…..to rekindle my past time with her, I would eat it with soju here in the USA… I guess mong gae is an acquired taste…Hope your trip is filled with pleasure & good memory!
Thank you! Yes, I think it is an acquired taste. Maybe we should have tried it with Soju 🤔 hahaha And that is a very sweet memory with your mom. I’m glad you guys keep the tradition alive even so far from Korea ☺️
Generally, if you order a sashimi set, Maeuntang(which is fish soup) is included. There are many people who do not eat sea squirt(Munggae) even Koreans. The price is not bad, but it seems to be a restaurant for domestic travelers. It's a place where people know that it's more expensive than the general price because it's on the beach.
It makes sense that it’s a more expensive place because it’s on the ocean there. But yeah, it seemed like a local place. I’m glad we tried it :) we weren’t expecting to get the soup for free, but it’s cool to know that that is customary in Korea
@@20CamelsEmily And Koreans rarely go to places like this because the food is expensive and the taste is not special. If you want to find a good restaurant, find a place with a lot of older Korean customers, then you will have a high chance of finding a good restaurant.
In Korean food, there are foods made for taste, but there are also foods made for survival, and there are foods that are considered medicine, so I think it will be difficult to get used to them. In general, there is a strong tendency to make products with health in mind.Kimchi is also a food that can be said to be a tonic. It's beneficial for your health. I know that in the past, kimchi was a food that foreigners did not like very much. Things have changed a lot these days. (Translated)
plz do not love camels, they are just creatures. you must love with creator (LORD) who is above from all skies. all praise to the Divine Providence almighty
@0:40 What you had is assorted sashimi mix (bass, bream, and greenling?(Hexagrammidae)) small size (for 2) plus Maeuntang (that soup @6:49) . I had to zoom in all the way to read on my phone :p LOL that monggae..is one of the last things I would eat. I've tried once and I've never touched it in my life.
Haha thank you for zooming in 🙏🏼😆🙏🏼 I feel like we only had one sashimi (as far as fish goes)... Just that white one. It all looked like the same fish to me. There were other fish on the plate, but they were cooked (other than the Meongge). Hahaha the Meongge 😂 I don't know if I'll ever try it again either
I'm surprised that the restaurant wouldn't have suggested one of those things instead, if that's the specialty of the region. Maybe they didn't sell crab or lobster there.
Sea squirts (멍게) have a lot of sea scent and taste. Some people dislike it because of its texture. Beach people love it, but inland people may find it difficult.
Restaurants in tourist area are always expensive. Also the soup is made with leftover fish parts such as head, bone and organs after slicing the sashimi and is always free
The sea squirt or sea pineapple is good if it's super fresh and you slather it with the vinegar, sugar, gochujang sauce with soju or beer to chase it. It's alcohol fodder basically. You're basically getting a shot of ocean in your mouth. Not my favorite Korean ocean shoreline creature to eat raw. The Korean food fantasy is lowtide filled with crustaceans and animals and a bottle of gochujang vinegar sugar sauce.
I'm Korean and I can't eat Meong-ge either. And $78 for what you had wasn't a lot. The soup was included in what you ordered. It just happens to take longer to prepare and coincidentally came out when you ordered the rice... which probably was included as well.
That’s good to know. No one told us to expect this haha, but now we know for next time. It was a delicious soup and I was happy they brought it out to us nonetheless
The cold soup was a delicacy indeed. It tasted delicious. It's good to know about the rice and the hot soup. We aren't used to getting a free soup after ordering sashimi, so we were caught off guard by that, but it is nice that they offer it!
I really enjoyed your video. Those food looks really good!! Your expressions on trying munggae was hilarious lol. btw this video reminds me of my childhood when my dad pushed me to try munggae while i screamed and cried not to eat one. I hated it for the same reason, awkward looking and slimy taste haha. but now i love munggae, everytime i go for 회(sashimi) i eat munggae. Many Koreans say that munggae has an 'ocean taste'. Its hard to explain but once you get more used to it, you'll probably understand. Overall I really like your videos. I'm very surprised that you guys are experiencing the 'real' Korean food and culture unlike other tourists. I really like you always try to analyze and make a guess on what you are experiencing. As Korean I think I can understand what foreigners might think about them. Hope you guys stay happy and safe. Thank you for enjoying and trying our food and culture.
@@20CamelsEmily your welcome Emily . I'm learning Korean language currently . Hope someday I'll be able to visit Seoul . N I really like your vlogs . Watching your vdos/vlogs from India 🙏
Sea squirts(멍게) tastes like LIFE. Little bit bitter, sweet and seawater. I think if u are over 30 or 40 which means u have gone thru lots of tastes you will realize something only that food contains. Try more than 5 times as time goes by.
This was great. My next trip to Seoul is in a couple weeks and will try to get out to the coast if I can. That looked amazing and was as fresh as you will ever get. I grew up in a UK fishing town. Id have to try the mongae to be sure. 😅
And the "soup" actually seafood stew, comes when people order rice and is part of the package usually. $78 for two including fresh seafood? That's a bargain. Try to get that in NY or even Seattle. I pay about $180 for two.
Whoa, So brave U're. Just walk and go to a ramdom restaurant and eat something never seen b4 :D I remember one day I visitied randomly a restuarnt in remote France. and ordered a cow liver steak. Ouch, i couldnt eat at all :"") I tried but really i couldn't. I felt so sorry to the owner. U might remember the meal so long after :"") But, WTH, finally, the travel is all remembrance. Hahah.
Who else loved, died laughing, during the meongge monologue!?! Hilarious, and then the gloriously honest kicker about the "after taste". So funny. I haven't laughed that hard in some time. Well done. And yeah, Korean hwae is an acquired taste. I, too, had to realize that it was an apples-to-orange comparison with sashimi. Koreans prefer their raw fish to be more dense and textured (and with their meat dips), while I'm more accustomed to the buttery taste of Japanese sushi and sashimi especially as it pertains to tuna.
in beginner, almost seafood are good match with red chili source. not black soy source. anyway $78 is expensive price a little. and i recommand more information korean food for foreigner. Each region has a strong food characteristic, so there are foods that even Koreans cannot eat, and there are many foods that foreigners like. good trip 😄😄😄
I try everything at least twice because the same thing can taste different at different restaurants. You never know. When I first tried sushi, I hated it, but then I tried it again and thought it was okay and eventually grew to love it.
It is very famous in Korea (Japan too I think) because I’m not sure you can find it in other places 😊 you should try it some time, maybe you’ll like it!
you ate 광어(flat fish). its really good fish and tasty. and 멍게 might be very hard for you and it would taste like pungent for you but its acquired taste so you might like it in the future. you just need a couple of more experience with 멍게. very unique flavor. and you ordered whole package and soup is a part of it. when soup is coming out, rice also comes usually.
In the US , maybe Asian food restaurants will charge $200 + for those foods . To my eyes, you guys are uniquer than the foods are . Looks like you are exploring
Hi E & V ive just subscribed to your channel after seeing you both on where is Dan. 100,000w seafood feast looked really tasty , did u finish it all. 🙂

Raw fish salad in fresh spring water is always nice, very refreshing and Monggea need to be prepared at pristine freshness otherwise it will taste bit off.
Just a friendly education; when you order the sashimi that Tang (soup) comes with it automatically without any additional charge. All the restaurants in Korea serves like that. Monggae is one of my favorite seafoods. Have a good trip. I live in San Francisco and planning to go to Korea end of November.
