I think that for 2800$ they could put a chrome switch cap, strap locks and stainless steel frets. Other brands do it.

+1 but I'd add that they should add a volute too, or decrease the headstock tilt angle. Strap locks are weird though.. which brand should they commit too? I'd rather Gibson make the strap lock guys buy their own than force some rando namebrand strap lock on someone that either doesn't want strap locks, or is picky about the brand.

In my opinion Hunter ,no matter what Gibson does they can't satisfy everybody (which is true in general) in the 70's they changed the headstock angle and everybody complained so they went back to the original angle and now everyone says they should change it to Epi's angle which they already did once ! They can't win ! Awhile back they used a zero fret and a Titanium nut on the HP and everyone bitched so they changed it back ,now the Modern isn't modern enough ,I totally understand why they played it safe ! But as you said, what do I know ? Rock on ! :-)

I think that's the problem Gibson tried to satisfy everyone with the modern series instead of going balls to the wall modern after the criticism of the HP which think was on the right track. The modern series should be what the HP series was just more advanced where they try new things and for those who don't like it there is lots of other Les Paul's to choose from. They were so close with the HP series but caved to the public pressure to pull back.

I've always been a huge singlecut fan. I have a PRS SE singlecut and a Gibson Les Paul Studio. But I recently bought the perfect modern Les Paul, called the LTD EC1000 and it came with an Evertune bridge. That is the fastest playing, fattest sounding, most reliable singlecut I've ever played. After 7 straight days only playing the EC1000 I switched back to my LP and was disappointed. The best, most modern LP has been available for years, just not from Gibson.

I had the EC1000 C, the full thickness solid one that weighed a tonne. I loved it, but the dude i bought it from loved it more as he paid £200 more to buy it back, so yeah, great guitar. I'm thinking of trying to get a hold of an Edwards by ESP since the quality is supposed to be through the roof and you've got the more classic 1 to 1 look

Unfortunately when Gibson actually try and do a “modern” les Paul, everyone complains. So they were probably not trying to change anything to dramatically. IMO

You are probably right. They probably just need to do more of an axis type of les Paul. What features do you think a modern player would want, if you could design a Gibson yourself?

@@jesselawson224 if it were me I would chamber the body a little to add a little weight relief, make sure the finishes actually pop. if you are going to go straight black commit to it don't do a half assed sparkle. then if you gloss finish the guitar make sure to do a satin finish on the neck. then make sure the electronics are versatile while keeping in mind that alot of modern players enjoy modding instruments either by installing new pickups or upgrading the pots regardless of how good they are when they come from the factory. then make sure the string pull is straighter even if that means combining with companies like string butler to have the headstocks come stock with it. large stainless steel fretts. then if you want to keep the tone pros go for it. I'd honestly like to see something newer like hipshot or something on the body it just helps in my personal experience when it comes to set up and making sure you can have better endurance when doing speed runs. the compound radius is a good step forward. Most importantly though optimize the freaking neck joint. If i am playing lead I will avoid les Paul's even on gigs where i have had to rent equipment. the upper frett access is a joke and makes it soooooo much harder to be in that range than it should be so i tend to get something that has a set-through (set neck that is similar to a neck through joint), or i would get a actual neck through. I know you asked Agufish but i had to step in and give some two cents here because this is honestly something i have put alot of thought into as the whole Gibson thing has been blowing up which hopefully it ends either with gibson getting better or just going under.

You do realize those were deemed defective and a tax write off or insurance claim, right? When a company destroys inventory like that, they are required to show proof that the product has actually been destroyed.

Great review. I would rather have small toggle switches below the volume and tone knobs to have access to the tone changes on the fly. And perhaps some Fishman Fluence or Bare Knuckles style pick-ups to make this truly more modern. And stainless steel frets should be a given at that price.

I agree with your opinion. If I want a modern take on single cut guitar, I will buy an ESP eclipse. But, if I want a single cut guitar with traditional feel, I buy LP standard 60.

Middle position with the neck volume knob rolled off slightly is the most balanced sweetest tone I've heard from humbuckers. Crisp, clear and huge sounding.

I won one of these in a guitar raffle so I didn't save for ages lust after it for months which means I can be completely objective as realistically it cost me £15 in tickets. I love the burgundy red finish on mine but that said I do think for the £2600 they cost in the UK in 2019 I would loved to have seen some really high end flame tops. The overall finish of the does leave something to be desired imo for the money the guitar should be flawless! It isn't nothing major that would affect play ability just some sloppy binding a little stain run. Considering the ultra modern weight relief it's heavier than I expected but nowhere near my 1981 heritage series standard 80 that's a beast in terms of weight. I really like the neck curve locking tuners mother of pearl inlays and all the switching options it's enough to feel modern without feeling too much. My one big gripe is that stupid access neck carve it's absolutely useless and might as well not be there. Overall I feel Gibson played with the modern series and slightly dialled back the modern but they were criticised for on the HP series maybe slightly to much for but you end up with a guitar it isn't traditional but isn't quite modern enough to be a true modern Les Paul. Overall 8/10.

I would urge anyone to buy a PRS Singlecut over Gibson Les Paul garbage any day of the week. You should do a review of the PRS S2 Singlecut.

I did just that! Bought 2 PRS S2 guitars. For a better quality guitar, I then purchased a 2019 Gibson Les Paul. Much better than the PRS. Both PRS had issues from factory so, quit continuing this BS. Any guitar company on any given day can let out problem guitars. AND, PRS are no different.

@@2550marshall It isn't bs Paul Reed Smith puts insane amounts of energy into every single aspect of each guitar. GTFO with your single bad experience. Gibson has spent more than a decade putting out guitars built with quality under the Korean PRS models. And charging you for messing up and destroying every 5th guitar they make. PRS follows every single step of the manufacture process with a once over of each aspect of the previous process before it moves on. Not only that but even the S2 guitars come out of the factory with a hand done fret job and set up. You'd be lucky to get a Gibson with the frets leveled, let alone crowned polished and the edges of the fret board broken. (Actual luthier here) You're as likely to get a messed up PRS as you are to get a "perfect" Gibson and that it a fact. Gibson's manufacturing process is the problem, there's no accuracy, there's no quality checks. I've seen multiple current Gibson's with neck joints barely glued in. Or that don't even fit the neck pocket.

@@djstringsmusic2994 No, make that two bad PRS experiences and …..two perfect Gibson's for me. First PRS has finish flaking off the back of the neck within six months of very light use and within the first month the volume pot went bad. Other PRS comes from factory needing one of the saddles finished cut so it doesn't buzz. I don't bash the company PRS because of it. Maybe they had a shitty employee not doing his job right? Also have a Korean made PRS and within the first two months the pup switch goes bad. I also own an Epiphone LP and I have had zero issues with it. All 6 guitars I am referencing here date from 2016 to 2019 and 3 of them had issues- all PRS. So, your logic is.....BS!

Your also comparing the highest spec Les Paul with a Entry level Kiesel CS6S. I could make the argument that a Les Paul tribute is $1200 and a fully spec'd kiesel with a flamed Koa top is $4000. Not really fair is it? Then she horning the argument that a Gibson is $2800 cheaper. The be fair, A really nice Les Paul without excessive bells and whistles would be a Les Paul Traditonal. Which is $2200 Evidently, a comparable Kiesel with 2 or 3 a flamed top, mahogany body, similar inlays and no binding is also around $1850. Or $350 cheaper. Which that feature alone would probably cost to add biding to a Kiesel.

I'm a big Gibson guy, but I'm absolutely not happy with this model.... What is modern with having the pickguard on, making the heel larger then last year or even removing the belly-cut??!! FRUSTRATING!! I don't like the combination of colored top & natural back, but that's my taste :P

Pretty guitar, I like the color contrast of the fine sparkle finish and the light brown back.. not really a modern LP guy. LOVE the old LPs but thinking about picking this model up just to have contrast.. $2800 is definitely an investment as you call it, but I’ve never lost money on my Gibson’s despite the controversy and bad press.. except for the 2015 models which I avoided like cancer. These vids are great or really see what they sound and look like in real life sans the marketing pics online. We’ll see how I feel in a week. So many great other brands now a days. Everyone has stepped up their game to provide a quality guitar. Fender and Gibson’s aren’t the only worthy shop on the block anymore. Keeeeeep’em coming Agufish!!

Seems like a great guitar, no doubt. But it is less "modern" in several ways compared to my 2018 Standard HP-II, which I love, and scored at a great price when they were clearing them out. But, a lot of purists bashed it, so I think that is why they were more conservative with this model. But as you pointed out, the previous HP, and now the modern, models shouldn't be catering to purists, there are other models for them. Great review as always!

Love the look of this model. But I can't do LP's. Built a Kiesel Crescent inspired by the black and mahogany. Spent $1000 less and still got my 7th string :) Let's face it: $2800? Byeee That aside, excellent breakdown with your review and demonstration, as always. Keep it up, brotha

I like the switching options, pickups sound great and the compound neck is a great addition but that contoured heel doesn't seem sculpted enough and it seems very expensive for a guitar has has relatively minor upgrades, for the price I'm wondering whether the classic is a better deal because they have similar specs and its cheaper

My favourite Gibson of the last few years is definitely the first of the new run LPJs with the single pickup and cryo frets. Just a simple guitar made to be played (and the non-sticky finish definitely helps me like it)

you hit the major points on the head, I picked up one of the modern off the wall at a gibson dealer yesterday, it's falling far short of what it could be, truthfully if they had gone with a "modern" pickup and real jumbo frets they would have had a potential winner here, this guitar really should be called Les Paul safety blanket.

Andy Eirich Maybe it is... but people are ignoring the fact that EVERY time Gibson try something more “modern” they get criticised. Let’s be honest... the outgoing Les Paul HP was more modern than this and it got criticised by traditionalist guitarists so much... people who didn’t take any effort to understand the Gibson range at the time and that it contained plenty of options to satisfy them. It’s us guitarists who have conditioned Gibson to be more conservative because frankly we’re largely a bunch of retro, traditionalist and uneducated (meaning regarding a manufacturer’s model range and options... I often find guitarists’ lack of product knowledge shocking) people (I was going to go with a much stronger word than that originally! 😜). We’ve conditioned Gibson to believe that they’ll get more sales with a slightly modernised Les Paul, pulling across existing Les Paul fans who want something a little different, than by going for something truly modernised. Unfortunately that’s left a (small) proportion of the guitar community disappointed that Gibson still don’t offer them anything relevant. It’s a real shame... but it’s as much the fault of us guitarists as it is of Gibson... we’re both equally culpable.

This is such a weird set of choices. If they'd just ditched the zero fret from the 2018-19 HP standard you'd have a much more desirable "modern" Les Paul. I really don't get why they've not gone with the Axess join and figured tops in strong colours.

I have a 2018 HP. The heel joint has a much smoother transition and is more comfortable. Not sure why they thickened it up for the modern line. Seems like a step backwards.

I kind of like the burgundy colored model. Unfortunately it just seems to be a bit behind the times. The only real modern thing I could see (apart from only painting the cap) is locking tuners. That doesn't leave much of a way to argue that it is worth the high price tag.

When you ate not heavily biased you do good reviews like this one. I hate though some reviews that you did for Epiphone in the past. Thumbs up for this one. I thought also that the stainless steel frets and a glowing cap should be there. An option for something like fluence modern should be on the table but that is on the taste of the owner...

$2800 is unattainable for a lot of guitar players lmao I was very unimpressed with Gibson's cheaper studio range when I upgraded to a better guitar. Went with a used Korean made PRS and couldn't be happier for the $500 I spent.

I've been selling a lot of my guitars lately. There's one country-build that just so happens to stay in my stable, and that's any guitar made in SK, which includes a WMI Korean PRS that I got for about $400. And yea... Gibson's studios in recent years haven't gelled with me for some reason... I think their Epiphone's are better lol

I don't see where the better part of three grand is. They've ripped off Warmoth's 10/16 radius and weight relief. The rest of the guitar is pretty pedestrian. It's funny that you pointed out that they have mother of pearl in the neck instead of mother of toilet seat, the way they've done for decades. I have never understood why they use plastic in the neck considering the kind of money they charge for their instruments. And I've never understood like Gibson fans tolerate that crap. There's nothing on this guitar, other than the actual skill of the luthiers, that should cost any extra money. Even set neck vs bolt-on neck, or the luthier's joint on the headstock, doesn't cost them that much more to do. I love how, at the end, you point out that you could change the pickups out for SE, Seymour Duncan pickups. That's really telling. I don't think I've seen very many people pulling Paul Reed Smith pickups off of the guitars in favor of Seymour Duncan's. And for $2,800, the case could at least have the nice Satin overlay that the old cases had. But I think you're right a more modern case treatment would have been smart. All in all well I'm a fan of the finished Les Pauls, I'm not a fan of buying a solid-body electric guitar for that kind of money. That kind of price is a lot more justifiable in a well-made acoustic where tonewoods matter and subtleties in design can make all the difference. On a solid-body electric, it has been proven time and time again, but 99% of the sound is in the pickups and electronics. and if you're going to drop that kind of cash, and still maybe replace the pickups, what are you buying? Less wanking please; I feel sorry for your dog.

The new glp tribute satin burst guitars are 1200. They look sweet. Might get one. Nothing sounds better then a Gibson into a Marshall imo. But for the modern 2800 and look that plain. Ridiculous imo.

It sounds amazing, the looks are... very underwhelming in my opinion, but most of all the "modern" features aren't nearly enough to make this a competitive model in my opinion... I'm not sure who this is geared towards? I can't imagine this resonating with too many guitar players when there are more modern, cheaper alternatives on one end, but more Gibson-esque alternatives for less aswell... sooo... who is this for? "Modern" players that *absolutely need* to play "authentic"?

One thing I'd add- there are not many modern-ish guitars with a 24.75" scale length and 22 frets (a personal preference of mine). Mostly Schecter (which is freakin' incredible btw), but I don't see a lot of other manufacturers running those two specs together in the higher price ranges.

But that one again is an absolute bargain compared to this guitar, has USA custom shop pickups, and really, really good build quality. AND a lot more effort (and money) put into the looks of the guitar

Great review... thunder and ceiling fans be damned. I don't know how I feel about gibson trying to be anything other than just Gibson... for me... I want my les paul to just be a LES PAUL. It's kind of a great thing as it is. If I want to play some harder higher gain (or something more "modern" I guess) I have a Carvin CS6. I like that my guitars are what they are... because it gives me such an excuse to own so damn many. (Wife justification). Anyway... Well done. You do a good job of having a definite opinion without coming off preachy. Love the channel. I'll be on the lookout for you at Winter NAMM...

I never played an asymmetrical slim taper neck... I wonder if the difference to my rounded c neck on my Epiphone Les Paul Standard is that big... My hands are pretty small and maybe it will be easier to play.

Man, I was so close to buying that guitar. Then I picked up an Epiphone Modern (graphite), saw the quality of craftsmanship, noted the only significant difference - no compound radius - and commenced to playing. I never put the damned thing down. Don't get me wrong, I love Gibson. And were I in the market for a truly vintage instrument (especially a vintage acoustic), I'd part with the money. But I am more than satisfied with my choice. I even like the Epiphone case (an additional purchase) better. So, there's my 2-cents worth.

Correct, but now that they have the "Original Collection" which appeases all the purists, they should have been free to go and make a less conservative Gibson for the flagship of the "Modern Collection". It doesn't have to be filled to the brim with technology or anything like that, but a Les Paul with simple modern features like extra jumbo frets, a set-thru neck, Luminlays (maybe), and re-voiced modern pickups would have been far more interesting and made more of a statement.
