Essentially, the 6.2% paid by your employer is part of your pay package. It's done this way, so you only see the 6.2% and not the whole 12.4. To your point, though, no, I wouldn't expect my employer to pay that portion and instead keep it, but I would require a higher total pay to offset the difference. It balances out or, at the very least, gets close.

It has a negative return because social security is NOT an investment product, it’s an insurance product. You don’t buy insurance for a “positive return”, you buy it to reduce your risk. This is the purpose of social security: if everything in your life goes wrong and you lose the farm and you’re too old to find work, you can (probably) still feed and clothe yourself. That’s all it is.

@mleobviously

@@AaronLDeWolf when I buy car insurance or home insurance, I'm not looking for a "positive rate of return", I might pay thousands in premiums and get back zero, and that's fine because I only receive money if my car or home is damaged. The money you pay into social security is like an insurance premium. If you die at 60, you get back none of your money. If you become disabled at 40, you may get benefits for the next 50 years. That's just how insurance works. Dave is giving the "rate of return" but that's a metric useful for investment products, and much less useful for insurance products.

It has dramatically reduced poverty and insecurity, the benefits clearly outweigh the perceived 4% cost. Now what we don’t want to talk about is the fact that alternatives to the system that are “privatized” are much worse than the current system, it’s almost as if socialization inside a capitalist system is key to its functioning. Unregulated and “unsocialized” capitalism will always fail. If you want the lockner era back please read a book.

@@JoshuaLlamaLlama except, rainy day funds run dry if you hit something exceptional. You don't take out health insurance for a cold, you take it out in case you get cancer. A cancer treatment can quickly drain a substantial amount of money from said rainy day fund. Or a hit-and-run, which leaves you into rehab for years to come. Your home insurance is to avoid being destitute if it burns down with all your belongings in it, you don't count on it burning down... It also assumes everyone has the same opportunities to build such a rainy day fund, which is untrue. Young people, people who have had long spells of poor health, etc, don't have much to rely on. Family? That's assuming their family cares, or is even alive. And someone who fell into poverty can tell you, it's in your time of need that you'll realise that many of your so-called friends will disappear from your life. So yes, it's an insurance policy, one you hope you won't need until much, much later, so you can improve your position yourself, because let's face it, social security won't save you from poverty, it will just protect you against the most abject levels of it.
