Not necessarily . Unlike conventional bayonets, the M9 was designed to not only be a bayonet but also perform as a knife. So the sharpness test is a complete fail.
picked one up as an all-purpose knife, and put the money down for a sharpening. Easily the best knife I’ve purchased. The reliability and durability are impeccable and the added sharpness really no pun intended gives it an edge.
cool to see the valorant guy here. I know this is a very old comment but hows the sharpness? I know its made for stabbing instead of slashing but im wondering if its sharp enough to cut paper easily
I know a couple people are kind of giving you the piss about how you're testing this _combat bayonet_ . . . but realistically speaking, any rigors exposed to any knife is a good test of it's overall abilities. If this thing can withstand ridiculously caveman-level abuse beyond what it's technically designed for, I'd say thats certainly not a mark against it.
The M9 is made from 420 steel. It's very durable. The Army doesn't have to teach soldiers what not to do with their combination bayonets/combst utility knives made from high quality 1095 steel, that way. Rarely will the modern bayonet be used as one by untrained soldiers.
Stabs a Casing Box--stab a helmet with the enemy wearing it,or stab an enemy wearing body armor... Stab an empty metal canister-Open cans for food,or just destroy aluminum, use the SAW edge to cut wire,etc..... Break Concrete or Cinder-Block- Chop Concrete or Cinder Block-- Break enemy face-Break or chop a bone with ease,Break Glass if under water,or break glass in case of emergency..... Standing Pressure- Old Stories say this knife had 49 designers-only a few designers made it(I think 5 ).,It was to withstand the weight of 200-500 lbs(I think it was up to 500 pounds). Drop test-drop tests were up to a couple flights(5 Story Heighth-someone correct me if I am wrong) to with stand the drop from a higher height. It’s a decent knife.I still like the Old AirMen Knife (Pilots Knife like my father had when he was in AirCrew in the Navy) and the KaBar(and KaBar story origin is very cool) Facts
The Army discovered in Viet Nam that a sawback on a spine used in CQC will probably get stuck and remain there until the battle's over. Compare the M9 to a Kabar or Case fighting knife. Same design overall, but the M9 has a muzzle ring, bayonet mount, and lower quality steel.
Oh By the way, The Bayonet was never intended for or designed to be a survival knife until the M9 was introduced in the late 80's I guess, not sure, but what a kick ass knife the US jumped to from the old M8 Vietnam bayonet.
No, bayonets that doubled up as survival knives did exist before the M9. The Eickhorn KCB-70 and KCB-77 did all the stuff that M9 does way before even the M9 was designed. If anything the wire cutter lug feature and the screwdriver block on the sheath found on M9 were copied from the KCB-77.
@@sergeantdef.3572 The 6X3 and 6X4 weren't long enough to provide leverage for cutting barbed wires. The screwdriver tip on the sheath was invented and patented by Eickhorn. I do agree that the KCB-70 was indeed based on the 6X4 but the features you see on M9 are directly copied from the KCB-70 and KCB-77.
Thanks for doing this. Instead of getting a dedicated survival knife I got this bayonet instead which goes with my rifle too! Like you said one can sharpen to their heart's content.
Really enjoyed the video and I have to say I am really happy with how well this knife held up! I am glad have a vouched for it in the past and still do!
This knife is tough. Other than that it's pretty much useless in every department. Paying $200CAD for a 420HC steel knife is laughable. My buddy got this against my advice and here's what I've gathered. 1. It's edge profile is terrible, I've seen axes with edges better designed for cutting and small tasks. 2. It's HEAVY. It's literally heavier than my 10" blade Kukri. Not only that it's unbalanced, terrible for fine tasks. 3. Who the hell would put this on the muzzle of their rifle? Who seriously feels like dropping 2lbs at the tip of their rifle... Nobody. That's who.
Its a bayonet, it is meant to place in the end of a m16/ m4 rifle and stab your enemy. It is great at its job.. Thats the purpose & the mission not cutting boards.
@@johncarnes2688 Even as a bayonet it's not suited for the job. Bayonets are meant for STABBING. This blade has the profile of a 2x4, not a bayonet. Not only that but it's super heavy. Why the hell would you want to slap 1kg on the tip of your barrel and make the balance of your rifle terrible?? Bayonets are supposed to be super light with a very thin profile.
@@Bowfella the blade length is 7 inches. Its not that heavy especially on an M16 platform. Little more awkward on M4 platform but not that noticble. Didn't use them that much in my 30year Army career, but it worked perfectly fine as a bayonet and never noticed it being heavy, especially with all the gear we had. It was fine for I se. It is such a good bayonet, that I bought a personal one for my persinal Colt A3 AR for nostalgia.
+GrizzlyPanda347 So far, I don't have access to a Cold Steel OSS. . . But in the near future I might be able to get one. Thanks for watching ! :) Mayor Fuglycool
For SAFETY ISSUES ALL sharp blades from a manufacturer Is SUPPOSED TO BE NOT very sharp You supposed to sharpen that once it’s in your possession. It keeps the Mailing Manufacturer or Seller from gettin sued invade there is a shipping or mailing problem,, I.e. -shipping accident -postage accident Facts
If he has one of those, I wouldn't be surprised if he didn't want to destructo-test it, as they are discontinued (I think) and are considered to be a "collector's piece" to some.
When you did that propane tank test did you think about it creating a spark and possibly igniting the residual gas in the tank? Even when they're empty they still have some propane left in them.
Don't worry, the tank was cleaned and washed before the test. I have opted out of the propane test, and instead just gone with the ammo can now a days. The ammo can is really tough, and the lighter gauge propane tank was too easy. Thanks for watching friend ! :) Mayor Fuglycool
Great torture test. I bought one just because, some years ago before they changed the handle design. So far I've just chopped up my apartment a bit (one great thing about renting).
I'm from Ontario :) I wonder if they're legal to get where I'm from. I'll have to check. I'm not really a knife enthusiast but this knife seems really cool.
I live in Ontario as well, and here's the basics of Canadian knife laws: - no gravity knives and switchblades including spring loaded knives, and any other one-handed knives (e.g butterfly) -no neck knives and any other concealed carry knives -you can carry any knife fitting above standards provided it's visible and you have a good reason for it. "Self defence" is not a acceptable reason. In short, blades are allowed, just avoid one handed and concealed ones, and have a reason for it.
This and the Marines OKC3S were meant to pull double duty as fighting/ utility knives also. Why they came with sharpening stones. That said. The steel is cheap and won’t hold an edge well, they’re meant to be cheap and replaceable. These cost the government ~$49 if I remember correctly.
Mr. Mayor, would you please do a test on the Ontario OKC 3S Bayonet. It's a great knife and bayonet, I don't think it would survive your test, but I would be interested to see how far it would make it. (I think the handle would either get loose or come off, but I think the blade is made of the same stuff as the Ontario M9 Bayonet blade)
mwillblade Yes, that is true, but it is also reported to cut wood material. To be honest, you could notch sticks for traps, but a better saw should be devised in my opinion. Mayor Fuglycool
Mayor, I learned some capabilities of a bayonet from you that I really would have not thought about. This was an entertaining presentation without any extraneous commentary. Good job!
Hey, awesome video! Could you maybe test one of those elemental knives (the real life csgo remakes) m9 bayonets, to see what the quality is? They are made from 420 stainless steel, but i highly doubt they have the same quality as this knife... They look really cool though, so i would like to see what the quality is like, and you seem to be a guy that knows a lot about knives ;) cheers!
I saw the elemental M9, it looked like the knock off chinaman M9 bayonet with a diff paint job. In the future, I might test the chinaman M9 as a similar test. 420 china steel has a tendency of stress fracturing and bending if it is not heat treated correctly. I will look into the china M9's in the future. Thanks for watching friend ! :) Mayor Fuglycool
Mayor Fuglycool Ah okay, nice! Ive came across your channel just earlier today, and i have watched a couple of your videos, and i must admit that they are very entertaining and informative! I will be looking out for your future videos :)
You did a torture test video on the Cold Steel Carbon V Kukri, and that was amazing. My friend and I each got one after that. I would like to see you test the Tops Knives brand Bushcraft Kukuri 7. Good job on your videos, and as always, Safety First.
Damnit i want that damn Bayonet.... But over here in the uk they cost a fudging bomb.... Guess ima have to make one.... Gotta make one more durable than this one...
Just don't cut it with a tempered wire(Harder than those ordinary fences and wires, those are tempered). I used mine, yeah it cut(The spring wire from cheap airsoft guns), but it leaved a mark like it damage the cutter in the sheath, but not the knife. My m9 if kinda different thou, the difference is, the saw is like from the rambo knife. I repeat don't cut those tempered wire, even their small like needle, they will still fuck up your cutters. At least get a bolt cutter or a heavy duty pliers for that.
Just ordered one of these off Amazon... I'm not a survivalist or even a camper, so I was tempted to buy a fake, pretty CS:GO replica (they are still 420 steel like most cheap knives), but I decided to get the REAL DEAL after watching this video. Besides, I can still spray on some Marble Fade and add StatTrak™ later =3
