@@jaggiecz cool, I think I will choose something a little wider and flatter, perhaps and esee knife or tops...but I would love to have one of these for for fun someday.
@@GoAvs69420 I also have a knife from SOG, the jungle primitive. Good knife, does the job. And the survival hawk, a tomahawk from SOG. Not to expensive, and they are good.
The "original" as you put it was the FM78 (Feldmesser 1978) introduces one year after the Steyr AUG ("StG77") assault rifle - hence the hollow grip, though it was never used as a bajonett. Originally designed for the Austrian army the "real" ones which we were issued with will have a symbol on the blade, just in front of the guard: a circle with a triangle in it, symbol for the ÖBH (Österreichisches Bundesheer). Steel is 1085 high carbon, this knife is a utility field and combat knife. Tough, but easy to resharpen in the field, though it isn't meant to be sharp! We use it to chop, cut ice, pry doors open, dig in hard packed earth and pierce barrels. This was never made as a cutting weapon (slashing etc.). That grip will also save your hands in our winters (-20°C when I was on winter manoeuvres in the Alps). We abused the heck out of those things, but they never failed.
Mine came totally blunt except for the tip, was a bit disappointed since I have no idea on how to sharpen it without changing the blade edge profile. Was it meant to be used as a pure stabbing weapon in the Austrian army?
My friend took this knife with him on a clean up mission after hurricane Catrina and told me he actually cut open a car door with it. I'm so stubborn I still haven't picked one of these knives up yet.
Be advised, they only make the 78 in black now, so if you own a 78 in OD dont abuse them as much. If you want to silence the sheath, take some paracord inner strands, wrap the around the tip of the blade and stick it down the sheath. Now glue segments of the outer paracord inside the top of the sheath.
YOU ARE A GREAT GUY. I love the way you are testing the blades. We can rely on you my friend. Best testing on the field, humour and no bullshit; Thanks a lot, really. JohnMc
When I was in the Army we only got the SAK Dutch army model and is basically a bit thicker version of the SAK Soldier. Great pocket knife but I wanted something more sturdy so first chance I got I took my Glock 81 model in OD, like my uniform (we did not use camo back than) and this combination of pocket knife and Glock served me well. I was not allowed to carry it but they never did find out, so that's ok. ;) Later changed to the 78 model and altered it a bit. That bottle opener is part of the attachment to mount on a rifle, so I cut that part of, altered the bevel and some alterations to the sheath. It is probably the toughest 'plastic' handle around for a stick tang knife. Still use it when I want a second knife but not add to much weight.
The 81 (the version with the grater) is a prohibited weapon regarding the rules of war. They may be old but are still in place. The bottle opener makes a good handguard so you don`t slip and i guess it wold be quite effective if you happen to parade a other blade. The biggest downsides are rust, the problem to deploy it one handed asap and that you have to quiet them down yourself because they rattle.
I have a 78, it was dull as shit when I got it but it became a razor in about 5 minutes. Fantastic blade for the $27 I paid for it. I enjoy your videos, I'd never abuse my knives like this so it awesome to see you try and destroy stuff. Super cool!
@@jonasdeejee890 Just use a ceramic rod for touch ups, or when more dull, a diamond rod. Stones work also, there are video's on youtube where they show it.
THX for youre help. I nearly bayed the wrong knife. Great Job great review. Got know a g81 as starter knife and it is a destructor. Thank you Mayor Fuglycool .
thankx fugly i had 1 before but gave it to a friend who needed some home security but lately i have been wanting something myself and been thinking about buying another now i will for sure -cheers from canada
I'm looking for a video that shows the best way to remove the end cap so the hollow handle can be accessed. The hollow handle is for either storing survival items, or for converting the knife into a spear.
Update: there's now a fairly well known way to improvise the pommel. First, here's some trivial info: Gaston Glock designed these knives to be used as bayonets for the Steyer AUG rifle. The partially hollow handle has threads that screw onto a special piece on the rifle. Ok. Also, there's a commonly used system for fitting an M14 bolt into the butt. Some ppl blue the bolt. It makes an effective bone cruncher/hammer. A guy on Ebay offers the kit/instructions or will do it for you. It can be waterproofed with an o ring. A few folks have used the handle like a Rambo knife. Finally, I haven't found a source for purchasing replacement end caps. The caps usually become damaged while being removed. They are extremely tight from the factory.
Brought both my sons this knife (plain spine version) when they finished Basic Training. In fact, as they were so cheap i got them two, one for a spare :-) keep it up, love the channel.
Mine came and an AH must of been running the sharpen. Edge was wonky meaning dips. A lot of dressing and now it pretty good. and yes it now slices through paper.
good for christmas gifts. because the knife sheath loop doesnt take up too much space, it would be a good fit for your battle belt along with your mag holders, first aid kit, and dump mag pouch.
Love the episode just looked up glock blades on RU-vid just got my 81 survival knife it's bad ass love it and you forgot to take the end cap off were you can use it for a spear
Yeah I've been hearing a lot of people having to sharpen it up a little bit, but otherwise an awesome solid knife! I've ordered mine from Midway USA and hopefully it's here before I leave back down South!
And the Austrian army still issued drinks with crown caps to soldiers in the field into the nineties. Plus - not meaning to start any major discussion - we are a very proud beer nation, with some of the best breweries...
This is the only $30 knife that I would wear on my belt. Thanks for the great reviews you do. BTW did you eat a lot of paint chips as a child? Just kidding?
Sorry but I dont understand the name of the Original knife out of solingen i realy like it can you please answer an say the name? ( sry because my englisch im from germany)
dead panda its a german ripoff of the glock knife i am from Austria and know its history tead my comments above and leran some facts about this knife :-)
Hey Mayor, just stopping by long enough to count your fingers. and I DO see all of them. I am smiling ear to ear. SAFETY FIRST MY FRIEND. I'll be back.
There is a mora robust (14 dollar knife) destruction test like this and it took everything they tried and never broke, bent, or anything. Those are partial tang also.
ClassicRockLivesOn I will see if I can make a tutorial video. It takes a lot of time to film, but I can see if I can fit it in to my channel. Thanks ! Mayor Fuglycool
A great modification for this knife is to have a metal pommel cut up to fit the cavity in the handle - creating a glass breaker / flat hammer or a fire steel striker
To get that plug out of the handle take a nylon line thru a hole drilled into the cap . leave a loop on the out side take both line thru a sized washer that fits the inside do a good knot that the lines cannot pull thru the washers hole . You now have a small loop to grab to remove the plug
So glad I found your channel lol, your hilarious and I wish I found your videos sooner. Found this after I purchased my very own glock 81 and wanted to learn more about it.
Mayor, the Glock clone I see on Amazon says its called Shadow Ops and says its made of 1080 carbon. I would be curious to see how the Shadow Ops held up as compared to the Glock. We know the Glock is tough enough but how close is the Shadow Ops which costs $15 bucks?
Great review Mayor! I'm going to purchase this knife based on your review & I can't wait to try it out. I really enjoy your reviews Mayor keep'em coming!👍
Hi Mayor could you do a destruction test on the coldste bushman or the coldsteel bowie with the holow handled to use like a spear, i Thank you and hope you do, your the best Mayor
You ar a great person, I like your test on that knives. Here in México we have no to much of that kind of cool tools for our Jobs, ( and I'am a military, yes I know) definely no ease to buy or adquire here, but thanks to your test, Mr. Mayor, now I know how to spend my Money wise.
Took my sog seal.... Pounded it as hard as possible on my mouse to subscribe. Awsome new way to use a knife. I get to pumped when I hear someone speak in 3rd person and test things in practical Manors
I have that same knife. And it's not even a full tang construction but it took that punishment. You can rely on it. Nice to know Mayor, makes me feel confident if I ever carry it with me. Keep up the good work.
Hello! Tell me, is this knife completely disassembled? And if it is disassembled, then after reassembly by hand, does it not lose its original strength and integrity?
