In Disney·Pixar’s Onward, we learn Wilden Lightfoot passed away before his son Ian was even born, and we learn that his first born Barley that he died an early, horrible, and depressing death. That’s why today I’m going to dive into Ian and Barley’s father’s backstory in an attempt to figure out what happened to him! Why didn’t he heal himself with his magic? Did what happened to him affect other elves? What illness, sickness or disease did he have? Today I’m going to tell you my Onward theory on what happened to this dad in Pixar’s newest fantasy film!

Theory: I think Ian and Barleys dad was cursed. He had a Phoenix Gem and as we know that most gems had a type of curse guarding them. So when he went to go find this gem, he found it but was cursed or maybe a curse he would’ve had to fought off injured him on the inside but didn’t realise until his symptoms started getting worse.

For sure. I really appreciated the movie also because my mom also died of cancer 4 years ago. The scene where Barley is describing his 4th memory of his dad is scarily accurate to how I felt and really got me. A scene that was also emotional was towards the end when Ian realized that Barley has acted as a father figure towards him all these years. It helped me to realize that I can still feel motherly love from others aside from my mom, and that’s okay. It helps to lessen the pain of losing them. But I’m glad this movie helped you as well, I hope you’re doing okay ❤️

My father past away suddenly as a shock to us all. I was 22, and had just gotten married. My brother on the other hand, was only 13, and just like in Lion King, was the one who discovered his body. Neither one of us got the chance to say goodbye, but there has always been a little guilt in knowing that I grew up with a father, while my brother did not. While Ian went through his checklist, realizing all the events he wanted to share with his father, he shared with his brother, I shared the same with my brother.

Ryan Lee that is literally the plot of the movie and the dude that commented, it would be 1,000 times less special of a movie if that happened. I also think its more realistic. I know this is one of the most fictional movies ever, but I think it's okay that they only got a little time. I think Disney was keeping in mind people in their audience who also may have lost a parent. Its comforting to see them reunited, but you don't want those people to envy or get upset that they couldn't get their parent back.

This is all assuming their father WAS a true Wizard. Little besides the fact that their father had the staff, the spell, and at the end a "Wizard name" suggests he was. After all, Barley knows more about magic than his brother Ian but can't cast anything. So maybe the staff and crystal is a family heirloom. That said, it may not have been difficult to obtain the spell even if Wilden was on death's door. He'd just research it. He was an accountant so looking over papers would be up his alley. It'd also explain why his wife would never know: it'd just look like he was researching something or doing paperwork. Also notice how the Elf in the intro looks a lot like Ian and has a very similar looking staff? I think family heirloom is likely. Wilden likely wanted to be a wizard but just didn't have the gift. But one of his sons might, so he took the chance in gifting the staff to them with the spell.

I think lung cancer is accurate I had a man I loved die at 28 due lung cancer. He was in great shape and lived a more tame life then most 28 year olds. I don't believe he was always a wizard. I think when he tried fighting it and that was not working he then turned to magic. Maybe like his oldest son he was into the dungeon and dragons like game. And the reason he never told his wife he was looking into healing or bringing himself back was he didn't want to get her hopes up.
@NenaGirl514
@NenaGirl514 4 года назад
Personally, I think the boys’ father had magic and truly believed in it but could not use it, very much like Barely; and left the gift because he truly felt that was the best he could offer to his sons knowing what was unfortunately to come. As for why Wildon did not try to heal himself, many stories involving magic have a central rule that magic can never be gain something for yourself (like Princess and the Frog). Sure you can argue that saving himself would be good for his children but in the same way you can argue using money to make yourself rich can help others but it isnt guaranteed to. You can also see the magic as not being able to make something out of nothing, like most of the spells in Onward do. There is always the potential of the object or situation to be manipulated but you never see anything simply appear out of no where with no cause..These are just my thoughts on it though.

I just saw the movie.. So will speak from that position. Magic is hard to control. At every level, you have to reach a greater amount of mindfullness. Barley used a more evocative language.. But that is what it comes down to. You can have evil magic. We see it. Being aware and in full self control and mobilization.. Doesn't necessitate goodness. Him healing himself.. He started learning *about* magic when he got ill. He didn't have time.

Idk much about how doctors would treat lung cancer with younger people but my grandma died of lung cancer & the only tubes I remember was just one & that was her oxygen tank but that just went into her nostrils (I think you know what I’m talking about). When she died, she wasn’t hooked up to a bunch of tubes, just the oxygen tank tube in her nostrils. The scary thing was she was gasping for air & it was very loud & very scary for me as an 8 year old. I personally think she still looked like herself in the end cause I spent a lot of time with her when she was dying (she was my babysitter) & she wasn’t in a hospital. They had brought a hospital bed to her home & she died at home. But that was her choice in the end so idk. But at the same time, I do know of a RU-vidr who has horrible lungs that are always collapsing & in those scenarios, she is definitely hooked up to a bunch of tubes to re-inflate the lung that collapsed. The tube goes like in her armpit & she’s said it’s really painful & uncomfortable. Her name on RU-vid is STRANGE ÆONS. She’s made videos about it. As she said in a recent video of hers talking about the reason she’s quarantining herself against the corona virus & scared af is because she has “trash bags for lungs” 🤣 so idk. He definitely could have had lung cancer but I’d go with pancreatic cancer myself just because that is so common & it’s really hard to cure & a horrible death. I think people who die of pancreatic cancer would most definitely be hooked up to A LOT of tubes. Hell, he could have had stomach cancer cause from the stories I’ve heard about my grandpa that died of stomach cancer (& the pictures) he did NOT look like himself in the end. The pictures are honestly really hard to look at cause he got scarily skinny cause his throat got closed up from the treatments & he had to eat through a tube. He was a heavy set man before so to see pictures of him looking so gaunt from the treatment he went through is really disturbing. There are so many types of cancers he could have had. The list is endless. So idk but I definitely agree that it was probably cancer. As to what type of cancer, I think that’s still up for debate.

I knew I was going to a Pixar movie when I decided to see this in theaters, but because of my mild expectations, I wasn't expecting to cry watching it. After finally watching it for the first time . . . it didn't make me cry, but I did not expect that Barley's telling of his least favorite memory of his dad would really stick and hit me in the most personal way. So I spent the rest of the day sympathetically thinking about my own dad who passed away almost similar to Barley's experience. This video turned out to be interesting, investigating the case of what disease led the brothers' dad lost his life. I feel bad for Barley, and the rest of their family. This movie eventually became one of my Pixar favorites as soon as I rewatched it in Digital because of this personal connection, aside the writers did a really brilliant job in their storytelling department about such a very tricky subject. I hope to see more videos from you about Onward and all of Disney/Pixar. ^w^

I actually have 2 theories I'm thinking about. Ok so people in Onward stop using magic and because of this people became adapted to use technology instead. So because of this you could argue that their bodies aren't attuned to magic as they used to. We don't know when Wildon started using magic, but since Barely was into magical things it was probably before his first son. Wildon was probably practicing magic in secret for years, but because his bodie wasn't attuned to magic as his ancestors it slowly started taking a toll over time until he died. That is why although Ian feels fine now and if Onward gets a sequel they might explore this more and Ian would probably start showing the same symptoms as his father did. My second theory is that Wildon was playing around with magic and accidentally cursed himself. That's it.

Hey Isaac! My name is Jada :) I love watching your videos and can honestly say that each one brings me joy. I appreciate your theory on how Ian and Barely's dad may have passed away, and can agree that it is very likely ; but while hearing your explanation I couldn't help but wonder if Wilden's passing could have potentially been a result from how he obtained the Phoenix Stone? In the movie, we witness Ian and Barely having to face the guardian of the Phoenix Stone and I can only wonder if, on Wilden's quest to find the stone, (If he had one) if death was his consequence. Thank you for spreading your Disney joy with the RU-vid family and I hope you have a magical day!

He couldn't fight a cursed gem if he was dying from cancer, the movie said that phoenix gems were cursed. I think that he got the gem when he was healthy, so that he could use it for other complex spells, and THEN got cancer. OR It's not impossible that some curse befell him in his magical adventures that made him sick and killed him, because they don't know how to cure magical illnesses anymore.

I think maybe another reason why Ian and Barley's dad wasn't able to use magic to save himself, was because he never had it in the first place. I think that maybe since magic is of little use in the time that the movie takes place, it's probably become very rare to have magic at all, so it's possible that the gift of magic skipped a generation before being passed to Ian. I know it might be a bit far fetched but it's possible. :-|

A big question, what if it is wizardry that killed the dad? It would explain why wizardry is a fading art. It can do amazing things, with a price. Only a limited number of elves can do magic but it is slowly killing them with every spell. Everything has a cost.

I think that maybe Wilden could use magic but it would be like filling a glass with a hole in it with water, you can fill the glass but it will only be a temporary solution. most if not all of the spells in this movie are temporary and Wilden was a great man because he knew that it would have been easier for him to die then to be with his family constantly on the brink of death.

I honestly kinda thought there was gonna be a further elaboration plot point about his dad's sickness. At the beginning of the movie when Ian is talking to his mom about his dad dying, She kind of hesitates and nervously looks down for a second before saying the word "sick". I actually rewound the movie a couple seconds at that part just to make sure that's what I saw. It was the kind of intentionally animated movement that usually signals to the audience that the person is lying or hiding part of the truth.

Having lost someone due to cancer at a very young age, I just kind of assumed that the dad died because of cancer. Both the fact that he could be let go and how he was talked about right before and the years coming after his death mirrored how my loved one is talked about now and what little I remember of him.

Tbh in fantasy every spell has its development, that probably takes years, if not centuries to perfect. I doubt there was a spell that took care of the dad's illness, or that he woukd have had the time and stamina to create one to heal him. So its pretty understandable that he wasnt able to save himself.
