It's kind of crazy how many reactors I've seen be confused by or misunderstand Ruby's reaction to being told her brother is sleeping with Akane. It's clearly because of Ai; just because Aqua was the one who dedicated his whole life to revenge, that doesn't mean Ruby wasn't affected at all by what happened with Ai.

Ruby getting mad at the thought of Aqua impregnating a teen is because of Ai getting pregnant as a teen and not because she was jealous.

I have no Idea how someone could interpret it as Ruby being jealous. Did we forget that Ai had a teen pregnancy?

13:29 she's not being weird, your second take was right. She can't believe he would given what happened to Ai. Yes, they had a happy childhood, but she struggled and Ruby might feel that she died because of them. No kids, no crazed fan calling her a liar. She definitely would despise him with all her heart for putting any girl through that potential future.

What it would be like for Aqua making children with a star actor. And with Akane of all people. yeah no shit Ruby would hate him if he did that with her!

Aqua humbled Melt so bad that he become a very decent guy lol For Ruby, being the child of a teenager single mom, I think she know damn well that Aqua wouldn't made that to another teenager girl, it's not jealousy, it's trauma, for both of them and I have to say, it's good to see that Ruby have some darkness in her too, because yeah, she is a parangon of joyfulness, but that mean that she tries to compensate for the hole in her heart that take the place of Ai. Also, Kana taking on Akane is both some romance jealousy and work jealousy, but also respect. If she didn't consider Akane to be a good actress, a rival, she wouldn't strike back. She is petty, mean and mercyless beacause it's her way to protect herself. We know how Kana feel about herself, being with "the genious" is threatening for her and she absolutely want to prove that she is not a second hand actress.

I personally took Ruby's response to the idea of Aqua getting Akane pregnant as a trauma response. Ai was impregnated incredibly young and her situation with the father was complicated, so I think it just worries Ruby that Aqua could end up like that. Especially looking at what happened to Ai.

This EXACT chapter of the manga is when I decided I was gonna read this darn thing all the way to the end even if it somehow took a turn later on. Chapter 52 hit me with that dead-eyed Akane and I was IIINNNNN. THREE WHOLE YEARS I'VE WAITED TO SEE AND HEAR THAT ONE SECOND AHHHHHH

The Ruby scene and her going "Dark" was due to the parallels with Ai. Just like Aqua, Ruby's got that hidden Ai PTSD. If Aqua had gotten Akane Pregnant, he would have done to Akane what happened to Ai. Thus, Ruby would never forgive him

Aqua tried to spook Akane the same way Ai tried to spook Saito when he was scouting her for B Komachi. "If I just say something wild they'll back off", but nahhhh. Bluffs get called. Also, Ruby's just in mad disbelief Aqua would be having sexy times with a girl who's only a couple years older than Ai was when she had the twins.

People really letting their extremely limited and secondhand knowledge from the manga influence their analysis of that Ruby scene. Alicia isn’t the first to misinterpret that scene and she won’t be the last.

Also the reason Ruby showed that dark side I think is cause you forgot Ai was a teenager when she got pregnant and their father was absent in their lives. So the idea of Aqua knocking up a girl in highschool, repeating the cycle, triggers her. It's not jealousy

1:50 why? Literally makes no sense. She understands him fully, and Aqua treats both pretty much the same, in that he's more focused on his own goals. Goals that Akane can be more help with. Akane can do what Kana does and more. Kana was more jealous of Akane taking care of Aqua in his time of need than caring that Aqua actually getting PTSD in the middle of the room. It seems you forgot that Akane knows why Aqua is doing what he wants to do now. So she's completely on board with his plans. Akane is the type to walk alongside you through Hell and back. Not even walk behind you, no, she's beside you. And she's supporting you through it all. That's a keeper right there.

I think one of Aquas problems with opening up is also cause he literally plans on using acting to murder while those around him is taking acting seriously. So admitting to murderous intent alone makes him think nobody would be on his side, so he just decided to be alone in all this. That is until Akane shocked him by here proving she'd be probably his only ally.

Melt has very quick become one of my favorite characters I hope he blows everyone away

It's definitely wild Komoshida (yellow hair dude) started talking smack after getting called out for going after someone younger/in the industry, and then proceeded to go after a high schooler. Hopefully Melt is able to put on a good performance. Also Akane matching Aqua's kill energy is a dangerous combination.

Kana and Akane's rivalry is so interesting because its not one sided but thanks to that things look more petty than they actually are Akane's problem is pretty simple, a case of don't meet your heroes, in a way Meeting Kana ruined Akane's feelings towards her at a young age and its stayed all her life, but Kana isnt who she used to be but she comes off that way to hide her more insecure parts, if she was honest with akane, then she'd lose her animosity towards Kana very quickly Kana however doesn't work that way, her rivalry stems from not knowing she's met Akane before so her first time knowing her was being out shined by her, making her see her as an actual rival and when work started drying up her own insecurites got the best of her, the Aqua stuff now simply doesn't help but her feelings started before Aqua ever started dating Akane So its funny how Akane's beef seems petty but can be fixed pretty easily while Kana's looks petty on the surface but is actually way more difficult to solve as it comes down ultimately to their situation as actors Akane feels genuine happiness being able to act with Kana but Kana only feels victory and defeat when it comes to acting with Akane

I think ruby was upset at her brother possibly getting his girlfriend pregnant, because it reminded her of their mom who got pregnant way to young.

You know, I was entirely on the same page about Kana and Aqua being the better couple *until* the moment Akane was fully on board for murder. From then on out, I could never see him with anyone else.

I don't think Ruby's reaction is because she's JEALOUS, I think it's because she's remembering what happened to Ai. As much as she loved being Ai's daughter, I doubt she thought very highly of the man who impregnated her before she was an adult. And she loves her brother (in a normal sibling way), so she's hoping he's NOT that type of person

Ruby isn't mad because she's jealous of her brother or whatever, she's frustrated the idea of him shaboinking Akane every night because that would entail him prioritising fooling around and having fun over seeking revenge for their mother's death, or conversely, him doing the same thing as their father and having a teen pregnancy like Ai

It's not that Ruby was being weird about Aqua here. It's that she would be very upset if someone who should know better about teen pregnancy (because of their mom) somehow ended up making the very mistake that literally killed their mother. So... yeah. Not weird, just complicated. Very much so tied to Ruby's feelings for her mom.

Guys, even considering things that happen later, it could not be clearer that Ruby's reaction is because she's thinking of Ai getting pregnant at 16. Something that consequently got her killed.

Akane might have issues with how far she's willing to go. But also, Aqua saved her life quite literally. She thought her life was completely ruined and she even tried to take her own life. But now she's way past that. She's doing great. Imagine if she succeeded back then. Not only did Aqua stop her attempt, he found a way to fix her public image. So I personally feel that it's not just about liking Aqua. It's also about owing everything she has right now to Aqua. So even past the business relationship they got going on, I think she'll still be ride-or-die even if they break up.

It’s really rough, that Melt gets so much shit. I understand where people are coming from, but he is 16. He had only done model work then, and it was his first act ever! Not only that, but he was the protagonist’s lead love! He was thrown off the deep end by the director and inevitably floundered. It’s sad.

She prob feels like a ride or die because she would not be alive if not for aqua and she would not been able to be in this play or even make the decision to murder someone or not..He gave her options. For life…You see something similar with the rapper Eminem and Dr. Dre…Also I like how the “awful” actor is more professional with the workplace than the experienced actor..

People call Akane best girl for being ride or die for Aqua, but I just think she’s crazy. How about let’s not help our boyfriend murder someone? Also, Ruby isn’t into her brother like that. That scene was purely because she was angry at the thought of her brother recklessly knocking a girl up as a teenager because she knows the struggles their mom went through for them as a teen mom. She’s been shown in the past to be fine with Aqua having a gf and at the beginning of the season even called him “an enemy of all woman” for treating Akane just as a work gf. She wasn’t jealous angry, she was just angry angry.

Ha, perfect timing, saying Akane’s a good girl and a good character but a bad partner for Aqua right at the beginning of the chapter 52 section - the very manga chapter that convinced me of that. Especially coming so soon after their different reactions to Aqua’s acting struggles. Back then, I wrote on Reddit, “If anything, this chapter leaves me more convinced that Aqua's character arc will lead him to a Kana end in the long run.” (You can find more of my thoughts from the time by Googling that.) Kana gets flack for things like her reaction to Akane tending to Aqua after the panic attack, and for being a little shit in general, but at the end of the day, Kana and Aqua bring out the best in each other, and Akane and Aqua bring out the worst in each other. …I wonder how much the “sure, just don’t watch them with me around” reaction is about personal growth and self-acceptance and how much is just that he specifically didn’t want _Kana_ to see his cringey past. (Are these the first lines Yumi Uchiyama’s had since S1E1?) “I don’t think that means mutual love, I think that just means someone who understands you more than anyone else.” You’re not wrong here, but it does bring a quote from the movie Lady Bird to mind about love and attention. All the talk about acting styles - Akane’s deep dives into character psychology, Kana’s focus on adapting to other actors, Aqua’s struggle to portray authentic emotion and compensating by copying surface aspects of other performances and using his other technical knowledge - brings back the feels about Act-Age being cancelled. It was my favorite WSJ manga back in 2020; it seemed like it was just a matter of time until an anime was announced. The news about the writer hit just a little while after Oshi no Ko had gotten out of the prologue, and I think OnK inherited a lot of its fandom. The central rivalry had a lot in common with Kana vs. Akane - the heroine Kei Yonagi as the rising star who would always get lost in the role, and the rival Chiyoko Momoshiro as the established ace actress who created a facade with perfect consciousness of the camera. And Kei had a lot of admiration for Chiyoko, and Chiyoko had this one shonen-rival moment in the great Double Cast arc where she was upset because she wanted to beat Kei at her strongest… gah. Act-Age is the one manga I will never hesitate to tell people to pirate, because it will never be legally distributed as long as the writer lives, and it absolutely deserves to be read. I won’t even say it’s just because of the art - Tatsuya Matsuki is a good writer. The moment when the Princess Iron Fan playwright reveals her trump card for bringing out Kei’s anger _still_ sticks with me, and I don’t understand how a man with that much respect for girls’ emotions and feelings of betrayal at the men who mistreat them could’ve done what he did. (Shiro Usazaki, the artist for Act-Age, has drawn Aqua/Ruby fanart and even contributed to some official OnK drawings. I’ve also seen it theorized that Abiko is partly based on her. Okay, end of Act-Age tangent.) Yeah, like other commenters have noted, Ruby’s point always seemed pretty clear to me: Aqua would never, EVER risk causing a teen pregnancy. Not him, of all people. Not when he knows better than anyone what the results of that can be, especially with Akane being a high-profile performer. You may have forgotten, but Kamoshida is 22. And Minami’s still in her first year of high school. Yeah, he’s a creep. But Melt’s chances of out-acting him are slim - Kamoshida made those taunts having seen what Melt’s capable of in rehearsals. Guess if Melt can impress Yoriko, that’ll be a win anyway. God, that Kana/Akane fight scene is great. Again we see that “Kana-chan” (as she’s _always_ called her) is the one person who can really piss Akane off, but the reveal of why Akane decided to become an actress adds such a wonderful layer to their rivalry. And the sheer pettiness of Kana to prepare for that moment the way she did, hunting down that back issue and ordering it online! (And it says something about Akane that she’s so upset about Kana knowing, instead of owning it like “yes, I loved that actress, and I don’t know _what_ happened to her, because I sure don’t see any of her in you anymore”.) It’s all so much better than if it were just a love triangle. Stray thought: Given the etymology of “sensei”, it’s remarkable that Yoriko uses it for her former assistant. Probably embarrassed Abiko a lot at first. (I don’t know if it’s typical for mangaka to address each other that way regardless of age/mentorship.)

I wonder if Ruby not getting the implication that Aqua and Akane are getting busy is actually Ruby messing with Minami (by forcing her to spell it out). Ruby is a gremlin and I don't think it's possible that's she's quite as naive as she appears.

Akane is one of the most ride or die girls in the most toxic way I think I have seen in an anime. Like there is being supportive and there is saying stuff like "even if you don't have a reason to kill someone and just want to I'm down to help" is such a bad mentality.

To all the people watching this episode and thinking, "I want to have a girl that's ride or die like Akane," no you do not. People like that will ruin your god damn life. They'll keep you gassed up while you're acting on your worst impulses that you otherwise would have cooled down and not followed through on. These are the type of people that get you to murder their parents so you can be together, and you end up with a life sentence while she gets a true crime episode and a Lifetime movie. They've always made fun of Aqua for having a sister complex, but Ruby has a far bigger brother complex. She even wanted to decide who he paired up with on the dating show. Which is when he told her she can't read people and should avoid dating for a while, and boy was he right. Thank god Kana was there to take charge and make sure that shit didn't happen.

pretty sure Ruby isn't jealous she just know that mentally her brother isn't a high school boy he's actually a grown man so for him to go and sleep with a high school girl she probably finds that disgusting. for instance Ruby knows that Aqua refused to be breastfed as a baby to avoid doing something like that so she expects him to maintain those standards.
