Without seeing you I can only take guesses, but my coach just recently taught us about it. A common mistake is, that people keep their upper bodies stretched while shooting. You have to lean into the shot while you swing. Another possible issue could be, that you do more of a chopping motion rather than an actual swing. In case you are righthanded do a wide swing all the way across down to your left biceps while turning your shoulder and hip into the shot. Hope this helps.
Shouldn't a defender always expect the attacker to not make any mistakes? From what I heard, a chopper is all about acting, work on how to trick them to misjudge the spin, instead of hoping they miss.
Hmm that is true however, my play is to keep a backspin on the ball positioning your shot and if the ball comes at the right position flicking it or hitting with a top spin shot Variation of spin does help as I learned that I am not a professional but all I have going for me is people even do struggle against my back spin however after sometime they adjust
there are 2 optimal attacking answers to a high backspin ball: *either* as shown in video (which is still challenging because you need good footwork and a good topspin technique, depending on the *amount of backspin* coming in) *or* executing a reverse punch on the ball. whenever possible, i'd prefer the latter (it's also more phun), also because it's easier, with a higher probability of making the shot.
I've got this exact problem. I manage to get an easy ball back after my serve, and I'm too afraid to hit it because I keep sending them into the net, so I never get to attack. I hope I can put these tips to use! Also, really hoping you make a video on playing Defense
I have a video on attacking push this month and a video on defensive tactics coming in May. Also hoping to make a series with a pro standard defender. Will be good if it ever happens!
@@TomLodziak I have seen people attack high backspin with smash even ball is not right above net. You are attacking high backspin with topspin in this video. Agree Y N Racket angle?? Please reply 🙏
@@gurpreetmann6629 Yes I am using topspin in this video. Some players will smash these balls. This is possible, but it is harder to do consistently. If you use topspin, you will find it more consistent to counter the backspin.
Sorry to be cruel. Good tip, but you're very flat footed and you don't use your legs enough to generate power. I see this often. Players use their trunk to twist but fail to properly use their legs to drive up from the floor.
Wow omg thanks for this tip! This is exactly my biggest issue and wasnt thinking that you will release this specific tip. Really struggling with these high backspins as I usually feel that before that high backspin I had the control in a point but then I will be just returning easy shot after high backspin my opponent does!
Good explanation. Top spin shots on high balls are not as powerful compared to a very strong smash. Hold the bat bit loose and smash the ball by using body weight transfer. High speed doesnt allow back spin rotations. It will cancel out the spin. This smash is impossible to return. This works out for balls that are high top spin too.
Should the bat be flat or tilted.. i usually try to smash it with a tilted bat just how i smash a high top spin but it always hits the net.. should i try it with a more flatter angle?
if it's high close to the net, i just drive/smash it across the net. The back spin kinda guarantees it will land on the table . Probably not the best thing to do but it works :)
Agreed. If it is high and close to the net, you can do anything you want! You have a big margin for error, so flat hitting in this situation will work fine.
The funny thing is that you do.not counter spin when you topspin back..you spin the same way the backspin serve is delibered but it works...which corroborate my theory that you can increase back the spin delivered by doing the same spin...not easy though but i did it. It is a geometry matter.
I disagree. I used to loop such balls, it works but the shot was not powerful and took me a lot of energy. I learnt from a more experienced player to flat hit such balls. I never use push against him, because as soon as the ball is a little higher than usual, he smashes it. I can do the same if the ball is pretty high. Just make sure that your bat angle and trajectory is perpendicular to the ball trajectory, so you may need to increase the angle of your bat.
Yes, you can flat hit these balls, but it is more risky. The margin of error is lower. If the ball is very high, then it's easier. If ball is medium high, then it is harder. But some players do flat hit high backspin balls. I prefer to topspin, as it is very consistent.
Virtually you are attacking high backspin with forehand topspin. But I have seen many many players who just smash the ball even it's not right above the net. Racket angle
It is very useful video! Dear Coach, please explain how to solve when backspin ball is high and short. I usually meet situation when play double game and it is very difficult to attack! Hope to receive your advice. Thank a lot! Give you a like!
Hi tom im an amateur table tennis player from the Philippines. I dreamed of having my own table tennis table. I someone is willing I'll be glad to receive some donations 😅
The backhand attack that is played many times in this video does not look like it has much topspin, it looks more like a relatively flat shot that is just played with a slight angle over the top of the ball, relying more on power and accuracy. Am I misreading it?
How about this advice? When the ball flies with backspin, I aim my hit at the edge of the table and even 20 cm behind the table. Backspin of the ball shorten its flight and the ball will hit the table. When the ball flies towards me with a topspin, I aim to hit the net. The rotation of the ball will extend its flight and the ball will hit the table. Hope I am well understood? Regards
My instinct in these situations is often to try to hit the shot deep, near the opponent's baseline, as if that would solve the problem of accounting for the backspin. It's almost always a bad instinct. Thanks coach for driving the fundamentals home.
Best ever coach on net. If you shoot more instructional videos with the pro or interviews with the pro. The number of subscribers on the channel will definitely explodes. for example I dont like other channel very much but when I saw interview with samsonov or liam pitchford I definitely watch the interview.
Thanks for advise so many of my serves come back high with back spin and I end up playing defensive shot back, but I play v much as flat hitter still going to take time to adjust
Tom, are you working on your jump rope routine? It's slight, but I see an improvement in foot speed compared to the critique in your previous video: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-LHTV4J5S6nM.html
Hello Tom, Its really a very masterful idea to pick this amateur problem and give a solution. Appreciate it. One problem is im not tall like you so the ball is shoulder height so i am unable to swing higher for topspin.
It depends where you put the ball. In the video, I may be using say 70% power. But if I do this with good placement, then it is very difficult for the other player the power the ball back past me.
knowledge master yes, I use them very successfully at top local league level. You can also swipe or punch chops for no spin balls that confuse and win points. Chopping topspin hard multiplies the spin and gives it back.
Long pips will change your game completely. I wouldn’t recommend it unless you are fully committed to it and you are going to play mostly defensive. It is designed to play deceiving balls and counter offensive players. Pips will take the topspin out or even reverse it, so they can be very effective but it requires some skills to control.
For your heavy backspin question: long pips will not produce as much backspin as a sticky or spinny inverted rubber usually. They do produce some spin but compared to some inverted rubbers, it doesn’t hold up. Again, these types of rubbers are designed to cancel out opponents spin and create a disruptive game.
Yeah, that's a mistake I have done countless times. I can't do top spin though. It's frustrating that nobody has taught me yet the proper way after almost a year at the club.
@@ravishsood8818 So I think this is a problem with the club system in Germany. We do compete (we have four teams), but we aren't like super successful so no sponsors like some other clubs. We train twice a week excluding games and that's it. While kids get taught stuff during training, we adults just play. There is no coaching per se and it's not really an environment where you can set an hour to just practicing certain techniques. It sucks. I'm almost 31 and I'm super greedy to become better, but there is only so much I can gain by just playing matches.
@@backspacer92 , I have had been a club player in a different country, I get what you mean. Everyone else just wants to play matches which will never enhance your game. Ask your coach or change it and learn new stuff, Your greed will make you better quickly.
This is similar to England. Most of the coaching is focused on the kids. But I mostly coach adults. There is a huge market! So many adults want to improve. It is a sport you can play all your life, so I think it is a little short-sighted for coaches to only focus on kids. I love coaching adults. Great listeners and learners.
Putting topspin on a backspin ball seems to accentuate the back spin and drive the ball down. I use backspin on the return. Seems more consistent for me.
You could return with backspin. This would be a safe option. But if the ball is high, there is an opportunity to be more aggressive and try and win the point.
@@TomLodziak attack becomes difficult this way there is I a palyer who plays with dead rubbers and always gives short back spin shots. I tackle him now with strawberry flicks nothing else works as my banana flick is not that good
This is an issue that stays with me for a long time) I want to be more of a looper to get the ball over the net, but oftentimes I'm a smasher who ends up in the net)
It is ok to be a smasher if the ball has topspin, but when the ball has backspin, it's much more consistent to topspin. If you can combine both techniques, it can be very effective.
Another great lesson - thanks for posting. If ball came lower, I would use top spin but had not thought that much about higher return HOWEVER if someone lobs ball back to me (not high backspin), I tend to let in drop to about 2 feet from table and then smash it - probably very good reasons NOT to do that but seems to work best for me (for now).
If it's a lob with topspin, I find it easiest to smash about shoulder height. But I have a player I coach who lets it drop a bit more and still manages to smash it hard. If you can do this consistently, then go for it!
I always like to choose service first. Game plan against a new opponent - first game, keep the ball on the table, keep it tight and see how good the other player is. Then if player is strong, may need to attack more. If player is weak, do not need to take so many risks.
I definitely agree. Topspin can help to create a bit more safety in the shot lifting the ball over the net and can even prove to be more difficult for your opponent. Sorry if my comment was negative. The rest of the video had good information.
I have put so much work into my pendulum serve, I can really nail the corner now! The return comes back right to my backhand, just as I planned... then I smack it into the net. Thanks for this tutorial, I hope it can help me make use of what is now one of my best serves!
Yes, it's a strange thing. The better you do the serve, the more it comes back to your wide backhand and it can be quite awkward. But once you get that backhand topspin working well, then it's a very effective serve + 3rd ball routine.
Useful tips. Thanks for this! But how to handle dead balls from off-spin rubber? I found them pretty troublesome as sometimes you hit them to the net and next time over the table.
For these no-spin balls, I prefer to play a topspin-drive. So quite a thick contact, but with a little bit of brush. This helps lift the ball over the net, but then brings it back down again.
There's an alternative to hitting topspin from a higher level , say upper chest height . Retreat till contact is made at ( just above ) net height and play a softer topspin with greater angle . Judgement of depth of the returned underspin ball is critical here . This works well especially towards backhand side . Or it gives time to run around to the forehand .
You need to learn how to hold the bat properly. When playing a forehand your finger is half way up the bat. Secondly your opponent doesn’t isn’t putting any backspin on the return ball.
