I have a 23 year old mk4 Astra estate that I bought for scrap money in 2010 with a severely overheated engine . I fitted a cavalier 1.7td engine in the Astra and 13 years later that engine has 600,000 miles on it with original injectors , fuel pump and head gasket and is totally reliable . I cannot believe how bad modern cars have become .
Hi there! I saw you used 5W30 but I think Opel recomended to use 0w20 grade oil, specification OPEL OV0401547, due to the faulty tensioner. This is made to correct the engine noise while starting. Anyway, very nice video.
Interesting video. Our Astra K oil pump chain snapped this weekend. We have the car from brand new and that awful rattle at start up hopefully will now be gone when we do the timing chain with the oil pump chain. But its a massive bill to foot but we outside warranty so no other option.
Opel dealer ensure me the tensioner I got from them is the newest upgraded version (3rd version). However, without putting extra gasket timing chain will still make rattle when engine starting. After adding gasket under timing chain tensioner that problem completely disappeared .
Did the sprockets need changing ? Some kits don't have them, so was it necessary to do the whole kit or would the chain + guides and tensioner not have been enough?
In my case sprockets were fine, however, customer dictated to replace everything. All the pieces used for this job came from opel dealer as a individual parts.
HI we have had the chain replaced on ours now it starts and runs then cuts out. then struggles to start and will only run if foot is on the accelerator. Error Crankshaft position wrong rotation. changed sensor and pick up ring. Any ideas? thanks
Hello, By your description it look like timing might be slightly out. I suggest remove the rocker cover and put your timing locking tools to double check just to be on the safe side.

Czy jest możliwość montażu samej uszczelki napinacza bez wyciągania wtrysków itd a jedynie demontując EGR i górną pokrywę rozrzadu? ?
Pozdrawiam
Does this gasket chain lubricate? it seems like it's giving oil to the opposite side of the chain. Or does it splash and grease the chain? Isn't the small hole on the gasket the lubrication channel?
Hello, I believe this gasket supposed to keep the oil in tensioner chamber. I also believe that little cut on the top of the gasket it is air release when oil pressure is filing oil channel .
@@kackac8277 Thanks a lot for the reply. I read that the small cut was to lubricate the chain. but I didn't understand how he lubricated the chain from there. if oil comes out of there at high pressure, will it reach the chain?
@@TheBluessoul I don’t think this is made to lubricates timing chain. That cut isn’t going in one line with timing chain so I can see how oil could reach timing chain coming out from there
@@kackac8277 if there's oil coming out of here, it's not just the timing chain, I understand that other parts of it are getting oil. Do you think if there is oil coming out of here, will it reach the chain? (my English is a little weak, sorry)
@@TheBluessoul I believe some part of oil coming out from there it will reach the chain but not directly. Upgrade on tensioner and also extra gasket it’s clearing the problem with chain rates .( of course if chain isn’t worn)
Merci
Hello. When you start your engine you will hear rattle noise for first few seconds and then disappears. You can add the gasket and modified tensioner and see will that help.
How many kilometers is this car? At how many kilometers is it recommended to change the chain on this engine? My Astra has 130k kilometers and I don't have this tensioner gasket, can I just put the gasket on without changing the chain?
Hello, Mokka was only 65k. Since new only short drives, and start/stop always on. This more likely cause chain to stretch quicker. you can put the gasket on the tensioner without removing the engine.
@@kackac8277 Thanks for the reply. I was told by Opel that the noise when starting was normal for this engine and not to worry. I was also told that there is no timing chain change interval (it changes when it rattles when the engine is warm). They also said that the tensioner gasket was recommended for the 110 horsepower engine and had no recommendation for my 136 engine
I have question for yout another video with DSG dq250 - The coments are turn off :( . Please, the noice that gearbox did, was only on 5th gear, or on the 5th and 6th?
I have Opel Astra K, 1.6cdti, engine code number is B 16 DTU. Does anyone know if there is Valeo or some other producer of central slave cylinder for clutch? In store seller claims that only original part fits… it is too expensive (350€).. Thanks!
Pozdrawiam
To zależy jak kompleksowa będzie ta wymiana. Niestety jest to dość kosztowna operacja . Jeśli doliczymy do tego sprzęgło i koło zamachowe to wyjdzie pokaźna kwota .
@@kackac8277 no problem I understand. Does this also helps if chain rattles during driving. But not actually on start-up? Our car does it most of the time during driving when heating up. Stone cold nothing. En on temperature much less. But During warming up al The time. Its also rpm related approx around 2000rpm. Thanks
@@leminako I couldn’t hear any excessive noise from the timing chain while driving or even revving up no matter cold or warm engine. Only first start rattle it was my issue.
Way we’ve done it last time using OEM parts (3 years ago) total around €1800. I suggest replace tensioner and add the gasket before you decide to go to spend crazy money as my customer decided at the time.
I’m pretty handy on these things. I’ll buy the tensioner and gasket. I’m sure with a knowledgeable friend we can figure it out. My other question to you is, when I disconnect the injectors and connectors, will I have to clear the codes again and set up I hectors with AUTEL OBD II reader?

i dont have a startup rattle, and i dont even have this new gasket ... the key is to put the right oil to the engine, 0w20, and dont use it on short trips. And avoid those fuel additives and cheap diesel ...
@@FlyingNitro1990 ask your local dealer, for months Opel has changed the recommended oil to 0w20. And yes, its thinner, oil moves faster and the pressure builds up faster. And since you have an oil-cooler the hot summers are no problem with this oil, and in winter it performs much better than 5w30

Unfortunately I don’t think flushing will help it. It looks like this is down to the design of the oil chamber behind the tensioner. It takes a good bit of time to fill up with oil after engine starting.
@@kackac8277 Do you agree with all the problem starts from tensioner’s malfuction?(I think so). Then what do you think that break the tensioner? If this happen by the ash or carbon then I will try to eliminate that.
@@fiberkim4443 Opel already upgrade this tensioner design and how far as I know they did it more than once. This will suggest they knew about the problem. I have to say, the engine I’ve been working on, there was no sign of any carbon building up. At the same time I have to highlight this particular vehicle was only 60k km and one owner from new + always service in time. Behind timing chain tensioner there is a big chamber. I believe after switching engine off , oil is running back to oil channel. During next engine start , all air need to be pushed out from the chamber before tensioner get some oil feed. Gasket I use it’s really helping with that. First of all is not letting all oil to return back to the oil channel and second thing is ,small cut in upper part of the gasket helps removing air from the oil chamber.
@@kackac8277 thank you for the detailed explain. But I still want to find out why it break at some point. Specific reason. Whether it’s spring or the ash on the check valve’s move. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-WyYsgZ5GLX8.html

What idiot thought that would be a great design? “Shall we put the timing chain in an easily accessible spot?” “Nah, let’s bury it next to the gearbox!”
