You have to hand it Keanu Reeves. The amount of martial arts and marksman training he did for those movies. The man committed. A passionate crew of producers and stuntmen always helps for a quality action movie, but having the star put in real prep work just brings it together

Yeah, what I always got from that show was that it doesn't like its main characters very much. Like, there was never an effort at understanding, just "nerd shit funny - insert laugh track". I think everyone agrees that picard s3 is at best 6 out of 10, while STD, and STP 1&2 are 0 out of 10. STP:S3 is interesting as it's the first one that doesn't induce explosive diarrhea. But the relief of not having explosive diarrhea, is not the same as an excellent series. It's more like "oh thank god, it's not Dysentery" than something to actually love.

While I like LP, all he has done is stated the obvious, so proclaiming he has some mystical insight is pushing it rather too far. You see, and here is the dirty little secret, all these IP, ST, SW, Marvel, DC and the whole damn structure is creatively bankrupt, largely by catering for a whole generation of consumers, which I am apart of, that have never let go of their toys. Reform could be possible, but ironically the whole rotten edifice is kept up by the 'reformers' like The Fandom Menace and indeed LP and CD to a certain extent, as well as the Durutti Column of SJW's, who are marching off to the creative, social and ideological dead end. In the circular firing squad known as the 'Culture Wars', where everybody is a willing participant, everybody wants the control of the play pen. What is so glaringly needed is a new play pen, new IP's that is both radical in vision and grounded in the human experience. But while we fight over the old toys, very few toys of merit are being made which capture the imagination of the next generation. Instead we get the nostalgia porn of Stranger Things, and the anodyne 'Romero-lite' rip off known as The Last Of Us. Ill take Threads from 1984 over some wishy washy melodrama. What concerns me is that the creative types are now on RU-vid, ironically creating content critiquing the system. I'd rather have Rich Evans and Mike Stoklasa writing new shows, and I suspect they would have been had this been in the 60's and 70's, than reviewing them. Even more worrying is that some reviewers are barely genre literate themselves. A few weeks back there was a very nice, earnest reviewer on the stream who has barely seen any film, he seemed to think that West German New Cinema or The French New Wave of Horror use the same story telling techniques, and who's only cultural viewing experience is via box sets, thus arguing that he needed 26 episodes of 'character development' (re:padding) to make it worth while. Each to there own I guess, but it hardly lends credence to his review of Andor which leans into completely different tradition of genre, borrowing from 1984, the story We or non fiction books like Staziland and documentary making, as well as films like the Lives of Others and Children of Men, than traditional Star Wars fodder. Had he recognized the troupes of political dystopian fiction, he might have got a lot more from it, but since he didn't he was 'bored'. Of course the chap can't know if he had never been exposed, and I'd much prefer Andor to be set under its own IP, but I should be grateful for small mercies that at least Picard is semi cohesive storytelling and Andor was mildly interesting. (srry for the TLDR)

Disney did away with the Timothy Zahn's of the Star Wars world. By dismissing the EU, after George himself had approved all of it that was canon, Disney said "fuck you, you're not welcome here anymore" to millions of fans in one fell swoop. Authors being fans as well. Buying a company and then getting rid of all previous culture and goodwill was a move that most companies do when they take over an entity anyway. It's not unusual. Quite a few of the suppressed guns in the John Wick movies would have to be firing subsonic rounds to actually be as quiet as depicted. I would argue that there weren't really any "Friends Clones" as Platoon suggests. Rather I would suggest that American TV sitcom series had existed in a constant state of iteration for decades prior, and that any similarities between Friends and any subsequent releases were merely the result of that process continuing.
@MrVvulf
@MrVvulf Год назад
I'd agree and point to (among others) Cheers as being just another iteration of the sitcom from a formulaic standpoint. Along with Cheers there was Taxi, Night Court, Growing Pains, Cosby Show, Different Strokes, and other formulaic sitcoms with similar tones. Happy Days, Archie Bunker, Good Times, Sandford and Son, etc. in the 1970s. And so on back to the 1950s with I Love Lucy. The "mold" of the type (tonally) of show which was most popular wasn't really broken until the "anti-hero" shows in the late 90s, starting with "Profit" (Adrian Pasdar) which was ahead of its time, but soon followed by Sopranos, Dexter, Mad Men, The Wire, etc. These days sitcoms aren't particularly popular, for the most part, with the exception of animated ones like Rick and Morty, South Park, Simpsons, etc. The traditional formula of milquetoast comedy with audience laugh tracks à la "Friends" got stale.

Dragons breath ammunition doesn't actually work the way it's usually portrayed in movies or games. It actually looks like firing a very hot, short-time flare. You would also never want to use it indoors unless firing from outside, much like a flamethrower. Another technical issue with them is that you would never want to use them in a semi-automatic shotgun because they don't produce enough energy to cycle the actions in most models, and they are also extremely dirty, prone to causing malfunctions. You can actually buy them in the US fairly easily in 42 of 50 states, but due to cost, fire hazard, general impracticality, and the fact nobody really uses them for anything other than novelty, they're uncommon. So of course I bought and expended some in the desert a few years ago so I could say I've done it.

The lesson studios need to learn from John Wick and Maverick isn't to clone them for success - that "formulaic" view of the studios is why they turn everything boring. The lesson they need to takeaway is to create quality non-message entertainment. It doesn't matter if you liked either movie or even like the genre - no one can argue that they tried to make quality films. They cared enough to make the attempt instead of disrespecting their audience with a message showing that we're not even worth the effort.

Agreed. The time was just right. There was family shows and copy shows. But Friends was for teenagers. Just going to college. That's it. It wasn't as great or funny or groundbreaking as anyone says. Look at how nice the make up is, doesn't look like they're wearing any. Remember when you watched TV alone? Remember when you spoke on landline phones for hours and then realised you had no cash when the bills came?" That's the current appeal. I've watched few episodes. There's one or two gags that are funny and delivered well. But its just a time capsule now. Its milk and toast. Inoffensive. And innocent. I see the world of John Wick coming out of a comic book/graphic novel. The action and plot are over the top and does require you to considerably suspend your disbelief, but the action is simply awesome which is very reminiscent of classic 90's action movies, and in today's woke Hollywood climate, it is like a breathe of fresh hire which is why its doing great at the box office and why many are forgiving its more over the top moments.

I don't get pissed about how unrealistic it is that Top Gun Maverick was using F/A-18s instead of stealth planes with standoff weapons, or complain about the inconsistency of using cruise missiles to destroy an airstrip but not destroy SAM sites a few miles away. in regards to the JW series i think the reason for success is a combination of factors. 1. the man with secret identity thing has been popular for decades and it's a highly underserved genre now unless they are acting as the mentor to some overpowered kid with zero world knowledge beyond "people should be nicer" 2. the action, longform choreography and situations were set up well and varied enough without the need for never-ending explosions. the venues were generally small, the fights mostly contained to one area and the few chase/infiltrations acted as a cause to change locations rather than as a typical chase-sequence where the transition matters less than the spectacle of the card crashing and spinning around in well co-ordinated but with very real vehicle damage inflicted (minus the actors who are CGd in later). 3. John himself if a very flawed character on a self-destructive mission, he's making bad decisions, he's putting emotion before logic, he's taking actions and organisations despite being given ways out AND HE'S PUNISHED FOR IT. 4. the setting was initially intriguing (excepting JW2 because the script on that movie was ass, i barely got through it), the sets were almost urban-fantasy in terms of hidden worlds in and around otherwise familiar things (again, lost later due to the number of open gun-battles without any bystander or not-paid-off involvement. 5. the level of respect given to both characters and casting. familar and talented faces in pretty much every role, characters that do their own thing even as the main plot is happening (mob boss calling up his subordinate for hitting his kid then hanging up after hearing the reason was a damned good moment) and while things went badly no character was outright disrespected without good cause, not even the spoiled mob bosses kid.

Just got back from seeing John Wick 4 not half an hour ago: and it is everything you want from one of those movies - slick, incredibly styled, wonderfully choreographed, lots of head-banging action, and some set-pieces that fully live up to the best of the series. Even the ending is satisfying, appropriate and oddly uplifting given what it entails. Nothing about the plot makes the slightest bit of sense - but who cares? It's an urban fantasy, so just go along for the ride. My only criticisms are it could perhaps have done with a touch less "nod-wink" to the camera: but it never got to point of really irritating me.

I think part of the appeal of these stoic older guys is that it's the king of the tribe curb-stomping the competition and demonstrating his life experience and wisdom are still valuable. Unlike something like Antman 3: Quantum Boogaloo, where the middle-aged guy is treated as a clueless, irrelevant dinosaur worthy of scorn who has to be educated and cowed by teenage girls. It's a reason I'm enjoying Korean Netflix shows, because you get to see positive portrayals of masculinity. Unfortunately, it has to be the older actors in Hollywood who fulfil this role because a whole generation of leading men have been starved of the opportunity to demonstrate any gravitas or stoicism. A lot of the time they're treated as immature or oafish. Even when they aren't, they can't shine because their characters are sidelined and they're stuck sharing the screen with the entire Burger King Kids Club.

In my small opinion, Star Wars failed because the executives at Lucasfilm/Disney threw the EU out wholesale, said "we can do better" then they pushed out complete trash and had to start bringing characters and plots back from the EU quietly in side stories & the animation with no acknowledgement of their mistake. They alienated their most hardcore fans in an attempt to make it more mainstream, and Lucasfilm has suffered for it. But they haven't suffered enough to learn the lesson. They took the golden goose & all of its eggs, tossed them into the bath with the baby, then threw it all out the window. The only money I have given Disney since they bought Lucasfilm was for the new Thrawn trilogy, and I only bought those books because Timothy Zahn had creative control over his work.

John Wick 5: Here we wick again... again
@Krissig12
@Krissig12 Год назад
What these guys are missing with John Wick is the fact that none of them are fighters and they can’t relate on the TECHNICAL level of the action. Everyone says the action is “stylish”, but that’s not really what makes it good. A huge part of John Wicks success is the fact that he is applying real martial arts like Judo and Jiu Jitsu, not to mention close quarters handgun mechanics in a way that no other films have done before. Even tiny details like press checks and tactical reloads to top off. For the male audience this is gold. We fucking love details, and many times they make or break action movies. It’s why marvel action keeps looking worse and worse. We used to get iron man tech scenes that were detailed and the mechanics of the suits and weapons mattered. Now we just get vague energy blasts out of every characters hands, and massive CGI armies fighting each other….. I also disagree with their point about “this wouldn’t have done as well if it came out years ago when other action moves were good”. This type of action has never been available from Hollywood before. I dare you to find me an 80s action movie that’s anywhere near as realistic in the technical details. But I do agree that the bullet proof suits are way overused. It’s a glaring failure in the technical detail department. At a bare minimum I would like to have gotten more scenes with John nursing his many bruises, resetting dislocations, dressing lacerations, etc. Or better yet, have the fights in tighter spots like the first movie and he wouldn’t need to rely of the suit to protect him as much. He could showcase his assassin skills better.
@Willie_Pete_Was_Here
@Willie_Pete_Was_Here Год назад
And similarly, this aesthetic is what makes the animations in the 2019 Modern Warfare game so appealing. The appeal comes from how skillfully the player’s character manipulates his gun. He performs tactical reloads to save magazines and the Call of Duty staple of a faster reload perk gives you a different animation where the player usually uses the bolt release rather than operate a charging handle. In the past the game would just speed up the normal animation. There’s also cool things like the player using the forward assist when picking up an AR platform rifle. Basically these are actions grounded in reality and the appeal is how skillfully the character does them.

@@chasehedges6775 indeed, he dies when he allows it, when his mission is over and as a form of peace. I have also said that another thing that humanises him is that he actually gets a lot of help and even luck in these movies. Hes not just some do it all himself battle tank.

Can we really be surprised that a sitcom from nearly 28 years ago would have elements that are problematic in current society? Look back less than 28 years from Friends and you have UK shows like Mind Your Language, It Ain't Half Hot Mum, Are You Being Served and Love Thy Neighbour which would have people up in arms in the 90s.

When it comes to American sitcoms Seinfeld was the only good one of the 1990s, & The Office was 2000s best. If you never seen either of them, I am jealous of you because if you do watch them starting with episode one & watch them in order, you're in for such a tremendous opportunity for such a good time you can not find anywhere today.

Whining about realism in the action genre is absolutely silly. Think of literally any 80s or 90s action movie. Were the protagonists vulnerable? Were you worried about realism while watching True Lies? Commando? Lethal Weapon? Was there tension that the good guys might die in the middle of a movie? Action movies that don't have a high drama element aren't designed to be edge-of-your seat thrillers. And I can't imagine a more stupid thing to say than John Wick hasn't done anything superhero films have done. Modern superhero films are entirely CGI. John Wick is largely practical. Jason Statham's criticism of the MCU is that it's all fake and they can just use computers to make anyone a hero, while he preferred showcasing his physicality. John Wick's action is far more interesting and satisfying to watch than anything Marvel has produced, even at its best.

I wouldn't mind a John Wick successor movie. I heard they were gonna made prequel spin off with John Wick cameos

Surely the natural progression would be Jane Wick, the previously unknown daughter to mocks and belittles him while being far superior at everything.

I still have a degassing stick I bought at Radio Shack years ago. From the degassing category tubes, tube days. That is the only way to fix the magnet issue. LED days no such thing to fix them. That stick was like a magic wand. pulled the damage right out.

Plate carriers in general can have Limerig pads as well to help displace the vibration from bullet impact on the plates as to reduce the soft tissue and organ damage and trauma. There are several different ratings for plates and their effectiveness against ballistic stopping power of incoming rounds.
