A History of the English Country House
Popularised in countless novels, and in films such as Gosford Park and TV series including Upstairs Downstairs and Downton Abbey, life in the English country house holds a particular fascination. The people who made them run below stairs are an equally important part of the story as their owners. This series explores the English country house past and present.
The English Country House 1: The Medieval Open Hall
For most of the medieval period local lords, the landed gentry, lived a communal way of life. The master and his family, household retainers and servants, eating and sleeping in a shared space, an open hall.
